Modification of pattern reversal VERs by ocular accommodation.

The amplitudes and implicit times of the P-1 component of monocular transient pattern VERs elicited by reversing checkerboard targets were measured in 6 conditions: (1) Ocular accommodation (Ao) elicited by minus power ophthalmic lenses; (2) Ao stimulated by minus lenses with the natural pupil of the test eye dilated and replaced by an artificial pupil; (3) accommodative demand and pupil size fixed with retinal image size (Ir) changed by afocal minifying lenses, (4) accommodative demand and Ir fixed but pupil size changed; (5) Ao elicited by minus lenses for three sizes of reversing checkerboa

Visual abnormalities with multiple trauma.

The diversity of pathogenetic mechanisms involved in posttraumatic visual impairment was reviewed in a study of the hospital records of 24 patients admitted with multiple injuries. Most major visual abnormalities occurred in young people (average age 33 years) who presented with a wide range of overall severity of injury (injury severity score 13-47) and involvement of the central nervous system (Glasgow coma scale 5-15). Bilateral or monocular blindness developed in 63% of patients. Seventy percent of the injuries involved the anterior visual pathways with damage to the optic nerve alone acco

Behavioral studies on the effect of abnormal early visual experience in monkeys: spatial modulation sensitivity.

Spatial modulation sensitivity functions have been investigated by behavioral methods in two monkeys reared with normal visual experience and 12 monkeys reared with abnormal, early visual experience. Experimental treatments were initiated when the animals were approximately one month of age. Two monkeys were each treated with one of the following procedures: (1) long-term monocular lid suture, (2) short-term monocular lid suture, (3) surgically induced esotropia, (4) surgically induced exotropia, (5) optical dissociation of binocular vision with ophthalmic prisms, or (6) chronic monocular cycl

Norepinephrine therapy of ischemic optic neuropathy.

Two monocular normotensive patients with nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy and retinal ischemia unresponsive to steroid therapy were treated with intravenous norepinephrine. In both patients, improvement in vision began within minutes after moderate hypertension was produced. A third patient showed no response to this therapy in one eye with established ischemic optic neuropathy, but had prompt recovery of vision in the second eye early in the course of ischemic optic neuropathy. This patient returned with recurrent ischemic optic neuropathy more than 1 year later. At that time she was fo

An unexpected role for normal accommodative vergence in strabismus and amblyopia.

Accommodative vergence was measured using the Müller experimental paradigm in which target movement along the line of sight of the viewing eye results in large movement of the fellow (covered) eye. Our paper demonstrates an unexpected predominance of accommodative vergence over disparity vergence in patients with constant strabismus amblyopia, intermittent strabismus, and amblyopia without strabismus. Comparison of accommodative vergence responses in these patients with responses from normal subjects using symmetrical and asymmetrical targets under binocular and monocular conditions establishe

On the incidence of unilateral and bilateral colour blindness in heterozygous females.

In 303 mothers of colour-blind sons, both eyes were tested with pseudoisochromatic plates and with the anomaloscope. Two hundred thirty healthy normal and 56 colour-blind males served as controls. In good agreement with the expected proportion of homozygotes in our sample, 17 colour-blind mothers were detected. Eight others had difficulty reading pseudoisochromatic plates and were conspicuous at the anomaloscope. In these, both eyes were affected to a very similar, moderate degree. Monocular disturbances of colour vision were not observed in the entire series. Our data suggest that (1) in most

Interocular transfer of a visual aftereffect in early-onset esotropia.

The interocular transfer of the tilt aftereffect was studied in strabismic patients with early-onset esotropia and in controls. Squinting subjects were divided into a microtropia subgroup with anomalous binocular vision and a large-angle esotropia subgroup with total suppression of the deviated eye. Patients with alternating microtropia and large-angle esotropia showed normal or moderately reduced interocular transfer of the aftereffect. Patients with monocular microtropia with medium- or low-degree amblyopia showed a reduced monocular visual aftereffect in the dominant eye and practically no
