Keeping an eye on pain: Characterization of pain behaviours in cats undergoing ophthalmic surgery.

This study characterized the duration and frequency of ocular pain behaviours in cats before and after the administration of analgesia pre- and post- ophthalmic surgery. Thirty adult cats (13 female and 17 male neutered; 6.6 ± 4.4 years; 4.2 ± 1.0 kg), including brachycephalic (n = 24) and non-brachycephalic breeds (n = 6), were enrolled in a prospective, controlled, blinded study. Surgeries included lamellar keratectomy (n = 17), enucleation (n = 10), and eyelid or ocular annex surgeries (n = 3). Cats were video-recorded undisturbed pre- and postoperatively as well as following the administra

Aggressive metastatic parotid squamous cell carcinoma with pulmonary, cerebral, and hepatic metastases: A radiologic case report.

Parotid gland malignancies are rare and represent less than 5% of all head and neck cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland is an uncommon subtype and is often associated with aggressive clinical behavior. While regional lymphatic spread is common, distant metastases to organs such as the lungs, brain, and liver are rare but indicate advanced disease and poor prognosis. We report a 60-year-old male with primary right parotid squamous cell carcinoma who initially presented with facial nerve paralysis and locally advanced infiltrative disease requiring debulking parotidectomy follo

Nanophthalmos presenting with acute refractory angle-closure glaucoma: acute-phase histopathological evidence and bilateral comparative findings.

BACKGROUND: Nanophthalmos is a rare congenital ocular disorder characterized by a microphthalmic eye with abnormally thickened sclera. Although scleral histopathology has been described in elective surgical cases with normal intraocular pressure (IOP), scleral architecture during acute IOP elevation exceeding 60 mmHg remains unclear. This article reports unique histopathological findings obtained during an episode of refractory acute angle-closure glaucoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old man with lifelong high hyperopia (corrected with + 10.25 D spectacles) presented with acute severe ocula

Sterile peripheral corneal infiltration mimicking infectious keratitis following chemical injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sterile corneal infiltration is an inflammatory condition typically associated with contact lens wear, staphylococcal hypersensitivity, or corneal procedures. Chemical injuries usually present with diffuse epithelial defects or stromal haze, whereas the development of a discrete sterile corneal infiltrate following chemical injury appears to be uncommon. We describe an unusual case of unilateral sterile peripheral corneal infiltration following accidental chemical injury caused by contact lenses soaked in a makeup remover. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old woman presented with seve

New-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus after Methimazole Exposure Followed by Autoantibody Emergence.

Methimazole-associated new-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is rare and it may be difficult to distinguish from classic drug-induced lupus. We report a 19-year-old man who developed fever, polyarthralgia, rash, and ocular pain three months after initiating methimazole for Graves' disease. At symptom onset, antinuclear antibodies and ANCA were negative, and there was no hypocomplementemia. Despite methimazole withdrawal, inflammation persisted. During the subsequent clinical course, ANA and MPO-ANCA became positive, in conjunction with the emergence of anti-double-stranded DNA antibody

Management and outcomes of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, characterized by progressive optic nerve damage often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Treatment for POAG currently includes medical treatment, surgical intervention, or their combination. The goal of this study is to evaluate and contrast the efficacy of these several treatment methods through a systematic review and meta analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on IOP reduction, visual field maintenance, and treatment related adverse effects. Studies published on POAG manageme

Macrophages increase in corneal epithelium and stroma after photorefractive keratectomy-like corneal abrasion and amplify ocular pain responses in rats.

In a preclinical rat model that mimics initial stages of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) we examined changes in the localization of CD68+ macrophages and in sensory nerves in cornea. Rats received a PRK-like corneal abrasion, then behavior and morphology were assessed 24 h, 72 h, and 1 week later. Corneal tissues were examined for changes in β-tubulin-labeled nerves and CD68+ macrophages at these time points. We found an increase in CD68+ macrophages in both epithelium and stroma that peaked 72 h after abrasion. We noted sex differences, with female rats showing slower epithelial healing and

Optimization and formulation of cyclosporine-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) for the management of dry eye syndrome by using centre composite design approaches.

The quality of life of patients with Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), a multifactorial ocular surface disease, is significantly affected by symptoms such as increased inflammation, ocular pain, and tear-film instability. Among the therapeutic agents used, Cyclosporine A (CsA) plays a critical role in modulating immune-mediated inflammation associated with DES. Conventional CsA formulations, like oil-in-water emulsions (e.g., Restasis®), fail to perform as well in the healthcare setting because they fail to disintegrate well in water, fail to distribute to the eye well, take a long time to work, and can
