Ocular pain is often treated with systemic analgesics, which are associated with some undesirable side effects. Because nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are thought to be peripheral analgesics, we decided to evaluate the local analgesic effect of flurbiprofen. We treated six eyes of five patients with linear endotheliitis. This entity appears clinically as a line of keratic precipitates on the corneal endothelium that progresses centrally and is accompanied by peripheral stromal and epithelial edema. A 78-year-old woman complained of ocular pain in the right eye. Thirty-three months before, the patient had a pterygium excised and mitomycin C, 0.04%, was instilled 3 times a day postoperatively for 10 days in the right eye. We evaluated 30 consecutive patients with glaucoma treated with semi-conductor diode transscleral cyclophotocoagulation to determine the results and complications of this procedure. Fifty young adults were interviewed about the asthenopic symptoms experienced in the preceding 6 months by means of a questionnaire; they then underwent ophthalmic investigation. A patient who had received digoxin for 6 months experienced glare and ocular pain induced by eye movement. The symptoms lasted for 2 days and disappeared within hours after the treatment was discontinued. Four months later, digoxin was readministered. After 2 days, the symptoms reappeared but disappeared again within hours of stopping treatment. The origin of the pain is uncertain, although mechanisms related to optic nerve or ocular muscle involvement should be considered. Digoxin toxicity should be included in the differential diagnosis of pain evoked by ocular movements.

We reviewed data from 47 patients who were treated for endophthalmitis at our hospital during the 11-year period 1980-90. The most common clinical features were hypopyon (75%), diminished vision (72%), ocular pain (68%), discharge (57%), corneal oedema (51%), conjunctival injection (49%), abnormal red reflex (34%), corneal ulcer (32%) and corneal perforation (6%).
