Hearing loss, hearing-aid use, and mortality risk: individual participant data meta-analysis of population-based studies from Australia, Iceland, and the USA and a replication study from Norway.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is associated with poorer health, depression, cognitive decline, and perhaps, with increased mortality risk. Whether hearing aids ameliorate this association is not well understood. We conducted a meta-analysis with a replication study to examine associations between hearing loss, current use of hearing aids, and mortality. METHODS: Hearing threshold data, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality (available across datasets) were analysed using individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of three combined population-based studies: Blu

Endoscopic transcanal repair of temporomandibular joint herniation into the external auditory canal: literature review.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) herniation into the external auditory canal is a rare condition associated with anterior canal wall defects, most commonly due to a patent foramen of Huschke, trauma, or infection. The clinical presentation is variable and often non-specific, which may lead to misdiagnosis. High-resolution computed tomography is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective surgical planning. While open surgical repair remains standard, minimally invasive approaches have not been widely reported. An 81-year-old male presented with right-sided otalgia exacerbated by mandibular movem

A comprehensive review of the taxonomy, pathogenesis, and therapeutic challenges of Malassezia pachydermatis in companion animals.

Malassezia pachydermatis is a lipophilic yeast that forms part of the skin microbiota of dogs and cats, and can transform into an opportunistic pathogen when the microbial equilibrium is disrupted. It is most commonly implicated in cases of otitis externa and dermatitis in dogs, and is increasingly isolated from cats as well, particularly in instances of otitis externa. The rising number of infections reported in recent years underscores the growing significance of this microorganism in veterinary medicine. Despite its clinical relevance, standardized methods for assessing the antifungal susce

Recognizing a Forgotten Disease: A Case Report of Tetanus in an Unvaccinated Adolescent.

Tetanus is a rare but potentially life-threatening vaccine-preventable disease in the United States. Because tetanus is now rarely encountered in the United States, diagnosis may be delayed despite classic clinical findings. We report the case of an unvaccinated sixteen-year-old Amish male who presented with progressive trismus and cervical rigidity thirteen days after tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy and incus debridement. Initial symptoms were attributed to a postoperative infectious process and treated with oral antibiotics. Progressive jaw stiffness and neck rigidity prompted emergency eva

Management of High Jugular Bulb in Retrosigmoid Surgery for Vestibular Schwannoma: Analysis of 590 Consecutive Cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High jugular bulb (HJB) is an obstacle when performing retrosigmoid intradural temporal drilling for resection of the meatal part of vestibular schwannomas. Some studies reported the technical nuance of the HJB management; however, the indications, impact on surgical outcomes, and long-term outcomes of this challenging management have not been fully analyzed. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and imaging characteristics of patients requiring the intraoperative HJB management, its impact on surgical outcomes, and long-term postoperative follow-up results.

Identification of blood-based inflammatory biomarkers for vestibular neuritis using a proximity extension assay.

ObjectiveThe present study aimed to identify blood-based inflammatory biomarkers that would help investigate the underlying pathogenesis in vestibular neuritis (VN) using a proximity extension assay (PEA).MethodsIn this single-center prospective study, we enrolled both a cross-sectional (acute VN vs normal controls) and a longitudinal (acute phase vs recovery phase) cohorts. We quantified 92 plasma inflammatory proteins using the Olink PEA and identified differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in each cohort using t-tests. The clinical utility and predictive value of each DEP were evaluated u

Asymmetric Hearing Loss as a Population Screening Signal for Vestibular Schwannoma: A Number-Needed-To-Scan Analysis Using NHANES and SEER.

OBJECTIVE: Asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the principal audiometric trigger for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to exclude vestibular schwannoma (VS). Although multiple audiometric referral criteria exist, the population-level burden of applying them has not been quantified. To estimate how many adults in the general United States population would be flagged for MRI by each of the 5 recognized audiometric referral criteria per incident VS, and to place that burden in the context of established screening programs and of current clinically indicated imaging. METHODS: We pooled

Spontaneous Closure of an Intraosseous Jugular Tubercle Venous Complex Arteriovenous Fistula with a Single Venous Drainage Route Following Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous closure of dural arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) has been reported. However, complete spontaneous obliteration of a jugular tubercle venous complex (JTVC)-centered intraosseous AVF appears to be rare. We report a case of a JTVC-centered intraosseous AVF that spontaneously occluded after diagnostic cerebral angiography. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of pulsatile tinnitus. MRA suggested an arteriovenous shunt in the JTVC. DSA revealed an intraosseous AVF with a shunt pouch located within the JTVC, supplied by multiple feeders. The les

Work Productivity Loss and Increased Recovery Needs in Working-Age Adults With Bilateral Severe Hearing Loss: Evidence From a Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of severe bilateral hearing loss on work productivity has not been fully explored. Given the communication difficulties experienced by this population, it has been hypothesized that work productivity may be affected, resulting in an economic burden. This study aimed to investigate work productivity among participants with severe acquired bilateral hearing loss. In addition, cognitive functioning was also examined to control for the possible intermediate effect on work productivity. DESIGN: This study presents observational data from 50 participants, aged between 18 and

Change in hearing loss and its association with general health in a community-based longitudinal study of middle-aged individuals: The Busselton healthy ageing study.

INTRODUCTION: With the ageing of the global population, disabling hearing loss is a major health concern. While age and sex are established determinants, the relation between general and environmental health factors and the progression of hearing loss remains incompletely understood, particularly in middle-aged adults. METHODS: We used data from the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study (BHAS), a population-based cohort in Western Australia. Adults aged 45-70 years at baseline (2010-2015) underwent audiometric testing and health assessments with a six-year follow-up. The better-ear four-frequency Pu

Auditory performance and cortical plasticity in blind individuals with sensorineural hearing loss: insights into dual sensory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Blind individuals with normal hearing frequently exhibit enhanced auditory abilities driven by compensatory cross-modal neuroplasticity. However, it remains unclear whether these compensatory advantages persist in individuals with dual sensory impairment. This study investigated auditory processing and cortical plasticity in early-blind, late-blind, and sighted individuals, all presenting with concurrent sensorineural hearing loss. METHOD: Participants completed auditory behavioral tests, including working memory, spectral ripple discrimination, temporal modulation detection, and

Recognizing Mandibular Hypoplasia, Deafness, Progeroid Features, and Lipodystrophy Syndrome Through Its Cutaneous Manifestations: Distinction From Werner Syndrome.

Mandibular hypoplasia, deafness, progeroid features, and lipodystrophy syndrome (MDPL) is an extremely rare autosomal dominant progeroid disorder caused by pathogenic variants in POLD1. Because MDPL shares many clinical features with Werner syndrome (WS), distinguishing between the two disorders can be challenging. We report a Japanese man with genetically confirmed MDPL caused by the recurrent POLD1 p.Ser605del variant, highlighting its distinctive cutaneous manifestations. The patient exhibited mandibular hypoplasia, limb-predominant lipodystrophy, skin atrophy, painful plantar clavi and cal

Ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in unilateral Ménière's disease: a narrative literature review.

The ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) is a promising non-invasive tool for assessing utricular function and superior vestibular nerve integrity. In the context of definite unilateral Ménière's disease, studies have consistently reported altered oVEMP responses in affected ears, including altered amplitudes, higher stimuli needed before receiving a verifiable response or prolonged latencies. These findings are thought to reflect the presence and accumulation of endolymphatic hydrops. However, variability across studies is substantial. This inconsistency may reflect fluctuating

Multiple Basal Cell Carcinomas in an Adolescent with an MLPA-Detected PTCH1-Region Deletion and a Gorlin-Goltz Phenotype.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome or basal cell naevus syndrome, is a rare hereditary cancer-predisposition disorder most often caused by disruption of the Hedgehog signaling pathway, particularly alterations of PTCH1. Classical disease is characterized by multiple or early-onset basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts, palmoplantar pits, skeletal anomalies and intracranial calcifications. Deletions involving chromosome region 9q22.3 may create an overlapping but broader phenotype because the deleted interval may include PTCH1 together with neighb
