Necrotising otitis externa: a serious condition becoming more frequently encountered.

BACKGROUND: Necrotising otitis externa is an aggressive infection of the external ear, which extends to the surrounding bone and soft tissue. In recent years, there has been an apparent increase in the number of patients admitted to our hospital with this condition. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients admitted to our hospital with necrotising otitis externa between July 2012 and June 2020. RESULTS: Among 39 patients included, only 9 were diagnosed in the first four years, and 30 were diagnosed in the last four years. There were 27 males and 12 females, and the mean

Microbial biodegradation of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics by an indigenous Candida tropicalis strain and biocompatibility evaluation of microplastics-degraded metabolites in GIFT Tilapia.

Microplastic pollution is known to impact various abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems. Among the various microplastic remediation methods, biological approaches using microbes have gained significant attention due to their high efficacy and eco-friendly nature. In this study, the degradation of PET-based microplastics was carried out by the indigenous yeast strain Candida tropicalis in in vitro batch degradation experiments. The degradation was measured by monitoring the optical density of the yeast grown on a medium containing microplastic pieces, as well as assessing weight reduction

A review of biofuels and bioenergy production as a sustainable alternative: opportunities, challenges and future perspectives.

Biofuels and bioenergy production are increasingly being viewed as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources because of their renewable nature and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waste products, lignocellulosic materials, and agricultural residues are some of the feedstocks that can be used to create biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. The production of biofuels not only promotes sustainable energy but also addresses environmental problems. This review article explores the challenges posed by dependence on non-sustainable resources and the environmental

Defining the Appropriate Length of Antimicrobial Therapy for Skull Base Osteomyelitis.

OBJECTIVES: Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is a rare infection comprising either the lateral (LSBO), central (CSBO), or both lateral and central (BSBO) skull base. Due to its rarity, the optimal length of antimicrobial therapy (AMT) has not been well defined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify factors that may influence outcomes of SBO and formulate clearer recommendations on AMT duration. METHODS: A multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of SBO patients was conducted. Patient demographics, medical comorbidities, presenting symptoms, laboratory results, radiographic

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds of the face, head and neck.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Wounds within the face, head, and neck region can have devastating aesthetic, functional, and potentially fatal outcomes for patients and often require multimodality treatment. Here we discuss the role of hyperbaric oxygen for a variety of wounds within the head and neck region and the clinically associated outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment can be useful in the management of wounds and infections within the head and neck region. While there are few randomized controlled clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of HBO therapy, there is a large

Expanding the diagnostic spectrum of malignant otitis externa: a case report of proteus infection in a non-immunosuppressed patient.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a severe and potentially life-threatening infection of the external auditory canal, most frequently caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Although typically seen in immunocompromised individuals-especially those with diabetes mellitus-up to 45% of cases have been reported in non-diabetic patients, highlighting the importance of recognizing atypical presentations. Rare pathogens, such as Proteus mirabilis, have been identified in only a few documented cases. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention are essential to prevent serious complications, includ

An Unusual Presentation of Nectrotizing Otitis Externa in an Elderly Patient.

Necrotizing otitis externa (NOE) is a rare but life-threatening condition that can often be challenging to diagnose. In this case report, we describe a rare presentation of NOE in an 83-year-old man with subtle signs of multiple unilateral cranial nerve palsy (VII, VIII, IX, X, XII). Prior to this, he had a three-month history of bilateral otitis externa, managed with topical and oral antibiotics. NOE was confirmed on CT head, which revealed left-sided skull base osteomyelitis (SBO). A repeat CT scan revealed left sigmoid sinus thrombosis and intracerebral abscess, indicative of disease progre

Cutaneous Involvement of the Ear as the Sole Presenting Symptom in Recurrent Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Case Report.

Cutaneous involvement of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is rare but has been previously documented to involve the head and neck region. Generally, involvement to the ears is limited to the ear lobule; however, this study presents a unique case of recurrent CLL with cutaneous involvement overlying the auricular ear. The presentation was initially concerning for possible perichondritis but remained unresponsive to antibiotics and steroids. Eventual punch biopsy confirmed the recurrent CLL, although the lesion also presented with unique pathology, notably associated granulomata. This case dem

Otitis Externa and Malignant Otitis Externa-for the Hospitalist/Internist.

Otitis externa has varying degrees of chronicity and severity. Acute otitis externa refers to a process of less than 6 weeks' duration, while chronic otitis externa lasts more than 3 months. Treatment of both includes ototopical agents and appropriate aural hygiene. Chronic otitis externa often requires routine debridement by an otolaryngologist. Malignant otitis externa is now referred to as osteomyelitis of the temporal bone. Patients will often have excruciating pain on examination. Granulation tissue at the cartilaginous-bony junction is a hallmark of the disease, but not always encountere

Application of decellularized tissues in ear regeneration.

More than 5 % of people worldwide suffer from hearing disorders. Ototoxic drugs, aging, exposure to loud sounds, rupture, subperichondrial hematoma, perichondritis, burns and frostbite and infections are the main causes of hearing loss, some of which can destroy the cartilage and lead to deformation. On the other hand, disorders of the external ear are diverse and can range from dangerous neoplasms to defects that are not acceptable from a cosmetic standpoint. These issues include injuries, blockages, dermatoses, and infections, and any or all of them may be bothersome to the busy doctor. Usin
