[The effect of the causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever on the respiration of the vector Ornithodoros papillipes (Birula, 1895) (Ixodoidea, Argasidae)].

A relatively low level of normal respiratory metabolism in O. papillipes has been observed as compared to most other invertebrates and even ixodid ticks. It is connected with biological peculiarities and habitat of this species. Changes in respiratory metabolism under the influence of Borrelia have been revealed. These changes vary at different stages of tick life cycle. In long-fasting infected individuals, respiration is further inhibited, and in nourished ones, is increased as compared to noninfected ticks.

Tick-borne relapsing fever in central Tanzania.

Between October 1985 and September 1986, 488 children aged less than 15 years, 45 pregnant women, 21 other women and 18 men with tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) were seen at Mvumi Hospital, Central Tanzania. 88% of the children were less than 5 years old and 36% were less than 1 year. Twelve children were less than 1 month old and some of the 10 infants diagnosed at between 4 and 12 days of age were cases of congenital infection. The clinical features of TBRF in the children and pregnant women were compared with 129 children with a similar age distribution and 52 pregnant women, respectively

[The current status of foci of tick-borne relapsing fever in the western Pamirs].

For the first time in the last 20-50 years foci of tick-borne relapsing fever have been surveyed in the western Pamirs. Settlements in the Piandzha valley were shown to be (as in the 1930s and 1960s) affected by Ornithodoros papillipes Bir., the carrier of the infection. Though the number of ticks is still rather high, it is nowadays considerably reduced. The findings suggest a tendency towards a decrease in the infestation of the carrier population with the agent of the disease. The traditional type of construction (especially widespread in far-off regions), when houses are built in such a wa

[Tick-borne relapsing fever in Madagascar: an eradicated disease?].

Since about thirty years, no relapsing fever due to Borrelia duttoni is recorded from Madagascar. A survey was conducted in the formerly endemic area, between Soalala and Majunga, in order to collect data on possible cases and to look if the vector, Ornithodoros moubata is still present. No mention of the disease was recorded; all Ornithodoros seem to have completely disappeared in the area, without any clear reason. However, a few O. moubata specimens were recorded from piggeries in Mahasolo, 150 km west of Tananarive, outside the endemic area.

[Effect of Borrelia--the causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever--on the vector].

Direct or indirect evidence of pathogenic effect of Borrelia sogdiana, a tick-borne recurrent fever causative agent, on Ornithodoros papillipes is obtained, pointing to a parasitic character of their relations. Differences between infected and uninfected ticks are revealed both under normal life conditions (lower survival, more intensive process of moult), as well as under the effect of poison. Higher sensitivity of infected ticks to DDT was established experimentally; HCCH effect was determined indirectly by counting ticks after treatment. Authors suggest that the effect of causative agent on

Pathophysiology of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, in ixodid ticks.

The pathophysiology of Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease spirochete, is unique in tick/vector relationships, differing substantially from that of other spirochetes, e.g., Borrelia duttonii, the agent of tick-borne relapsing fever, and Borrelia recurrentis, the agent of louse-borne relapsing fever, in their respective vectors. Following ingestion by a tick, B. burgdorferi lodges in the midgut diverticula, in some instances penetrating the gut wall and invading various tissues. Certain investigators suggest that transmission of the spirochete occurs via infectious saliva, although, in light

Antigenic variation of surface proteins of Borrelia species.

During relapsing fever, the etiologic spirochetes employ antigenic variation to avoid early immune clearance. In Borrelia hermsii, an agent of tick-borne relapsing fever, a switch in serotype is associated with a change in the predominant protein on the surface of the cells. The variable major proteins differ from one another in primary structure along their lengths. Genes encoding the different variable major proteins can be found in both "silent" and "active" environments. At the active site the gene is expressed; at the silent site the gene appears to be in storage. In variant cells, which

Relapsing fever in pregnancy: analysis of high-risk factors.

The diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever was established in 27 pregnant patients by demonstration of Borrelia spirochaetes in a thick blood smear and the borrelia index was estimated to calculate the density of the spirochaetaemia. Clinical findings are described and compared with those reported from Rwanda. The results suggest that the density of the spirochaetaemia and the gestational age are the main high-risk factors.

Cross-reactivity in serological tests for Lyme disease and other spirochetal infections.

Serum specimens from 163 persons with Lyme disease, tick-borne or louse-borne relapsing fever, yaws, syphilis, leptospirosis, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever were analyzed to assess the specificity of indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) tests, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and microscopic agglutination (MA) procedures. Strong cross-reactivity occurred when sera from individuals with Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, and louse-borne relapsing fever were tested against heterologous Borrelia antigens. The enlarging spectrum of tick-borne spirochetoses: R. R. Parker Memorial Address.

The author reviews his changing interest in tick-borne spirochetoses during his career (1951-1985) as a medical entomologist at the U.S. Public Health Service's Rocky Mountain Laboratory. The discoveries of relapsing fevers in the western United States in the 1930s and 1940s led to well-supported epidemiologic research, including studies on the relationships between vectors and spirochetes. When tick-borne relapsing fever in the United States was shown to be a relatively rare and readily treatable disease, financial support was withdrawn, and ongoing research was limited or terminated. The spectrum of relapsing fever in the Rocky Mountains.

Between 1940 and 1976, two cases of tick-borne relapsing fever were reported in Colorado, but since 1977, 23 confirmed cases have occurred. All patients had fever, with a mean of 2.8 febrile episodes (range, one to six). Complications included thrombocytopenia, endophthalmitis, meningitis, abortion, in utero infection, and erythema multiforme. All treated patients were eventually cured with antibiotics, although two pregnant patients failed to be cured by their initial courses of antibiotics. Seven of 21 treated patients had Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions, three of whom required intensive care.

Tick-borne relapsing fever in a premature infant.

Relapsing fever is caused by the Borrelia species of spirochetes. Louse-born epidemics of the disease may occur but the endemic disease is usually transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick (Ornithodorus). Transplacental infection was suggested more than 75 years ago (1) but has been rarely documented (2). We describe a case of neonatal relapsing fever where maternal infection was the probable cause of the premature delivery and infection in the infant.
