BACKGROUND: Human central nervous system infections due to free-living nematodes, although extremely rare, are usually fatal. Immunodeficiency has not been a feature of most of these cases, unlike the situation pertaining to disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis infection.
CASE REPORT: An elderly immunocompetent man presented with a history of tinnitus and otalgia, progressing to central nervous system involvement with confusion, weakness, and other neurological signs. Examination revealed a unilateral external auditory canal soft tissue mass and radiological evidence of ipsilateral temporal

OBJECTIVES: Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a rare complication to acute otitis media (AOM) in children. Population-based studies are useful for establishing adequate treatment strategies and to evaluate the effects related to the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in 2007. Previous reports however report on an overdiagnosis of AM, warranting the need for validity assessment. The aim of the present study was to assess the validity of ICD-10 diagnoses of AM and to address the differential diagnoses. Further, we aimed to map the incidence of AM over time and to specifically map t

Corynebacterium (C.) auriscanis is an opportunistic pathogen regularly isolated from canine otitis externa, an important condition often hard to treat. We found a surprisingly high prevalence of β-lactam resistant isolates of C. auriscanis (47 %), even though β-lactams are not routinely used for otitis externa treatment in Switzerland. To determine the genetic base of this phenotype, a selection of isolates of C. auriscanis with high and low minimal inhibitory concentration values were subjected to whole genome sequencing. Comparative analysis revealed a gene cassette containing three genes (h

There is an urgent need for alternative antimicrobial therapies in veterinary small animal dermatology due to the limited therapeutic options available for treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed oil for topical treatment of localized infections of the skin, such as otitis externa. Antimicrobial activity was determined by broth microdilution using a strain collection of bacterial pathogens associated with skin infections, including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (n = 120), Staphylococcus aureu

Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a rare, potentially life-threatening disease. It involves inflammation of the external auditory canal with concomitant osteomyelitis of the temporal bone, usually with evidence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The patient population is often immunocompromised, mostly due to inadequately treated type 2 diabetes mellitus or the use of immunosuppressants. Erosion of the temporal bone is common and can lead to complications such as peripheral facial nerve paralysis, meningitis, and/or cochlear and vestibular damage. The treatment of choice is usually several weeks of an

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is a rare but potentially life-threatening serious infection. It is most often caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and typically affects elderly people with diabetes or weakened immune systems. We present an 80-year-old man with diabetes who was diagnosed with SBO with left facial nerve involvement after initial misdiagnosis and inadequate response to treatment for otitis externa and Bell's palsy. Imaging and transmastoid biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Although prolonged antibiotic therapy suppressed the infection, the left facial nerve palsy remained unresolved. T

BACKGROUND: Established risk factors for the development of otitis externa (OE) include stenotic ear canals, dermatologic disease and insertion of foreign objects. The link between obesity and susceptibility to different systemic diseases have been demonstrated, but not yet with OE.
OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at determining whether obese patients had OE infections that were more difficult to treat compared to normal weight children and investigate other measurable patient factors contributing to OE infection resolution in our unique patient population.
METHODS: A chart review was conduc

Necrotizing otitis externa (NOE) is a severe infection of the external auditory canal that can extend to the skull base. We report the case of a 67-year-old gentleman with insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus with suboptimal glycemic control who presented with a likely complex NOE. Initial findings included ciprofloxacin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, elevated inflammatory markers, and multiple cranial nerve palsies. MRI revealed the presence of granulation tissue at the osseocartilaginous junction. Histology from the right external auditory canal confirmed the presence of necrotizing

Canine otitis externa is a common and recurrent ear infection in dogs, often caused by bacterial pathogens, and complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance. The analysis of bacterial isolates from dogs with otitis externa revealed a predominance of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, representing 41% of all cases, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (23%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (19%). Other less frequently isolated organisms included Escherichia coli, Streptococcus canis, and Proteus mirabilis. These results highlight the significant role of S. pseudintermedius in the pathogenesis of ot

Otitis externa is typically a benign infection of the external auditory canal; however, in high-risk individuals, particularly those with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, it may progress to severe otogenic and intracranial complications. We report a case of a 59-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and an HbA1c of 14%, reflecting longstanding uncontrolled disease related to medication nonadherence, who developed a temporal lobe abscess and Wernicke's aphasia following inadequately treated otitis externa. At her initial emergency department (ED) visit for left-sided otalgia, otoscopic examin

Rhodotorulae are environmentally ubiquitous yeasts that were originally considered non-pathogenic. However, over the last fifty years, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginosa) has established itself as an emerging opportunistic pathogen incriminated in several systemic and localized infections in humans and animals. Most of the rhodotorulosis cases were linked directly or indirectly to an immunocompromising event in the affected cases. Nevertheless, recently, a few non-immunocompromised cases were reported. In the current study, performed throughout the period from April/2023 to April/2024,

INTRODUCTION: Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is an aggressive infection of the external auditory canal and the underlying bony structures of the skull base. Predominantly caused by Pseudomonas, the treatment has shifted from surgical to medical, with antimicrobial therapy being primary, although surgical intervention may still be required. This review aims to provide global prevalence and mortality data on MOE to help institutions establish treatment benchmarks.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. Se
