Genetic basis of β-lactam resistance in Corynebacterium auriscanis and association with otitis externa in dogs and cats.

Corynebacterium (C.) auriscanis is an opportunistic pathogen regularly isolated from canine otitis externa, an important condition often hard to treat. We found a surprisingly high prevalence of β-lactam resistant isolates of C. auriscanis (47 %), even though β-lactams are not routinely used for otitis externa treatment in Switzerland. To determine the genetic base of this phenotype, a selection of isolates of C. auriscanis with high and low minimal inhibitory concentration values were subjected to whole genome sequencing. Comparative analysis revealed a gene cassette containing three genes (h

In vitro antibacterial activity of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) extract seed oil against multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens in small animal veterinary dermatology.

There is an urgent need for alternative antimicrobial therapies in veterinary small animal dermatology due to the limited therapeutic options available for treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed oil for topical treatment of localized infections of the skin, such as otitis externa. Antimicrobial activity was determined by broth microdilution using a strain collection of bacterial pathogens associated with skin infections, including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (n = 120), Staphylococcus aureu

Patient cases with malignant otitis externa at the university clinic of Ludwig Maximilians University Munich from 2009 until 2020.

Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a rare, potentially life-threatening disease. It involves inflammation of the external auditory canal with concomitant osteomyelitis of the temporal bone, usually with evidence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The patient population is often immunocompromised, mostly due to inadequately treated type 2 diabetes mellitus or the use of immunosuppressants. Erosion of the temporal bone is common and can lead to complications such as peripheral facial nerve paralysis, meningitis, and/or cochlear and vestibular damage. The treatment of choice is usually several weeks of an

Skull Base Osteomyelitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is a rare but potentially life-threatening serious infection. It is most often caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and typically affects elderly people with diabetes or weakened immune systems. We present an 80-year-old man with diabetes who was diagnosed with SBO with left facial nerve involvement after initial misdiagnosis and inadequate response to treatment for otitis externa and Bell's palsy. Imaging and transmastoid biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Although prolonged antibiotic therapy suppressed the infection, the left facial nerve palsy remained unresolved. T

Influence of obesity and socio-linguistic factors on otitis externa treatment outcomes in children.

BACKGROUND: Established risk factors for the development of otitis externa (OE) include stenotic ear canals, dermatologic disease and insertion of foreign objects. The link between obesity and susceptibility to different systemic diseases have been demonstrated, but not yet with OE. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at determining whether obese patients had OE infections that were more difficult to treat compared to normal weight children and investigate other measurable patient factors contributing to OE infection resolution in our unique patient population. METHODS: A chart review was conduc

Bacterial Agents and Antimicrobial-Resistance Patterns in Canine Otitis Externa.

Canine otitis externa is a common and recurrent ear infection in dogs, often caused by bacterial pathogens, and complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance. The analysis of bacterial isolates from dogs with otitis externa revealed a predominance of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, representing 41% of all cases, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (23%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (19%). Other less frequently isolated organisms included Escherichia coli, Streptococcus canis, and Proteus mirabilis. These results highlight the significant role of S. pseudintermedius in the pathogenesis of ot

Emergence of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa among pet animals: a possible public health risk on the move.

Rhodotorulae are environmentally ubiquitous yeasts that were originally considered non-pathogenic. However, over the last fifty years, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginosa) has established itself as an emerging opportunistic pathogen incriminated in several systemic and localized infections in humans and animals. Most of the rhodotorulosis cases were linked directly or indirectly to an immunocompromising event in the affected cases. Nevertheless, recently, a few non-immunocompromised cases were reported. In the current study, performed throughout the period from April/2023 to April/2024,

Antibacterial effects of chitosan-based hydrogels containing Trachyspermum ammi essential oil on pathogens isolated from dogs with otitis externa.

BACKGROUND: Growing antibiotic resistance has made treating otitis externa (OE) increasingly challenging. On the other hand, local antimicrobial treatments, especially those that combine essential oils (EOs) with nanoparticles, tend to be preferred over systemic ones. It was investigated whether Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) EO, combined with chitosan nanoparticles modified by cholesterol, could inhibit the growth of bacterial pathogens isolated from OE cases in dogs. In total, 57 dogs with clinical signs of OE were examined and bacteriologically tested. Hydrogels of Chitosan were synthesized by

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from otitis externa: Emergence of CC30-spa t019-SCCmec IV carrying PVL as major genotype.

The increasing emergence of Staphylococcus aureus as the primary causative agent of otitis externa has been noted; however, detailed information regarding the molecular characteristics of these strains in Iran remains scarce. The current study aims to investigate both genotypic and phenotypic attributes of S. aureus strains implicated in ear infections. In the present work, we analyzed 60 S. aureus strains isolated from cases of otitis externa over a period of 45 months. The resistance patterns were determined using disk diffusion and microbroth dilution methods. All S. aureus isolates were co
