Heterotopic ossification in chronic fibrosing otitis externa.

Acquired external auditory canal atresia is a rare complication of chronic inflammatory otitis, and is generally fibrous or soft tissue in nature. Here, we present the first reported case of heterotopic ossification within chronic fibrosing otitis externa in a 25-year-old male patient with a childhood history of granular myringitis and failed tympanoplasty. A calcified mass was demonstrated adjacent to the tympanic membrane on CT imaging, and surgical exploration revealed a cohesive bar of bone traversing the medial external auditory canal. Drill canaloplasty and split-thickness skin graft cov

Does Hearing Aid Use Increase the Likelihood of Cerumen Impaction?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impacted cerumen is a common condition in adults. It is commonly believed that wearing hearing aids may increase the cerumen impaction, although no empirical evidence exist. The current study was aimed at studying if the use of hearing aids increase the likelihood of impaction of cerumen. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study used retrospective design. The study sample included 164 consecutive patients who were referred to cerumen clinic from Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Wales. Audiologist classified the cerumen impaction into four categories (i.e., no cerumen; non-occluding

Funding flows to global surgery: an analysis of contributions from the USA.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, funds for global health have risen substantially, particularly for infectious diseases. Although conditions amenable to surgery account for 28% of the global burden of disease, the external funds directed towards global surgical delivery, capacity building, and research are currently unknown and presumed to be low. We aimed to describe external funds given to these efforts from the USA, the world's largest donor nation. METHODS: We searched the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), National Institute of Health (NIH), Foundation Center, and re

Pinna abscesses: can we manage them better? A case series and review of the literature.

Suppurative perichondritis of the pinna is a serious condition with potentially long-term cosmetic sequelae. Literature regarding the optimal treatment of these abscesses is scarce with most case series containing low numbers. This work reports the largest series from the UK to date; along with a review of recent literature. A 10-year retrospective review of case notes was undertaken. Demographic data, interventions and microbiology results were recorded along with outpatient descriptions of cosmetic outcomes. 20 patients were identified with male:female ratio of 4:1. Average patient age was 2

An unusual cause of conductive hearing loss: bilateral complete meatal obstruction following otoplasty.

There are many causes of conductive hearing loss. Otoplasty is a commonly performed cosmetic surgery to correction for prominent ear. We discussed an unusual cause of conductive hearing loss, bilateral complete meatal obstruction following otoplasty, in this article. This complication was probably due to unsuitable placement of the Furnas sutures. In the literature, as a cause of conductive hearing loss, unilateral complete meatal obstruction has been described rarely, but bilateral complete obstruction has not been defined. Hearing loss recovered completely after revision surgery. Correct dia

External auditory canal stenosis due to the use of powdered boric acid.

Acquired stenosis of the external auditory canal (EAC) may occur because of chronic external otitis, recurrent chronic catarrhal otitis media associated with tympanic membrane perforation, chronic dermatitis, tumors, and trauma. Stenosis occurs generally at the one-third bone part of the external auditory canal. In this article, we present 3 cases of acquired EAC stenosis due to the previous powdered boric acid application. Besides the presentation of surgical intervetions in these cases, we want to notify the physicians not to use or carefully use powdered boric acid because of the complicati

Subspecialty emergency room as alternative model for otolaryngologic care: implications for emergency health care delivery.

PURPOSE: A dedicated otolaryngology emergency room (ER) represents a specialized surgical evaluation and treatment setting that may be an alternative triage pathway for acute otolaryngologic complaints. We aim to characterize practice patterns in this setting and to provide insight into the epidemiology of all-comer, urgent otolaryngologic complaints in the United States. METHODS AND METHODS: Electronic medical records were reviewed for all patients who registered for otolaryngologic care and received a diagnosis in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary ER between January 2011 and September

Hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of perichondritis of the pinna.

Perichondritis is a condition characterized by pain, swelling and purulent discharge from the external ear, which may progress to a deformity of the pinna. The presence of co-morbidities such as diabetes mellitus may aggravate the situation. The main aetiological agent is Pseudomonas aeruginosa and treatment consists of antibiotics combined with surgical drainage of the ear. We present the case of a diabetic patient with recurrent perichondritis of the pinna treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with successful healing. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proved beneficial as adjunctive therapy of

Benefit of a new hearing device utilizing cartilage conduction.

OBJECTIVE: Our previous study demonstrated that sound was effectively transmitted by attaching a transducer to the aural cartilage even without fixation pressure. This new method for sound transmission was found by Hosoi in 2004, and was termed cartilage conduction (CC). CC can be utilized even in hearing-impaired patients who cannot use air-conduction hearing aids owing to continuous otorrhea or aural atresia. A prototype hearing aid employing CC was investigated in this study. METHODS: Four patients with conditions such as continuous otorrhea and acquired aural atresia after surgery partici

Variable performance of a human derived Sarcoptes scabiei recombinant antigen ELISA in swine mange diagnosis.

The performance of an indirect ELISA test based on Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis recombinant antigen Ssλ20ΔB3 (rec-ELISA), to diagnose pig mange was investigated in 15 experimentally infected and non-infected pigs and 692 commercial pigs from 16 herds in southeast Spain. These latter animals included 6-7 month old fatteners (13 herds), 11-12 month old replacement sows (1 herd) and ≥24 month old breeding sows (7 herds). All pigs were examined for mites in ear skin scrapings and the presence of S. scabiei-associated macroscopic dermatitis; moreover, fatteners were also tested for antibodies agai

The point prevalence of otitis media with effusion in secondary school children in Pokhara, Nepal: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a condition of uncertain aetiology seen in paediatric practice. It has important sequelae that can result in significant morbidity. Worldwide documentation of OME prevalence in older children is poor as OME is traditionally seen in children below the age of 6 years. Available research in Nepal reports a prevalence of OME in children between the ages of 3 and 8 years as high as 27%. This study aims to establish a reliable prevalence of OME in children between the ages of 9 and 16 years in order to inform public health policy and target limited reso
