Auricular perichondritis is a severe bacterial inflammation of the cartilaginous part of the external ear sparing the lobule and the tragus. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid necrosis of the underlying cartilage and permanent auricular deformity. Management includes antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Surgery to control the inflammation is sometimes necessary. Wide cartilage and subcutaneous tissue debridement with preservation of the helical rim to minimize the resulting auricular deformity is necessary.

The external ear is often involved in facial trauma. This is an updated review of the major conditions involved in external ear traumas: the auricular haematoma, the auricular perichondritis and the auricular laceration. These conditions must be quickly diagnosed and treated due to a risk of a severely deformed ear if left untreated. This is also a brief summary of the possibilities in reconstructive surgery of the ear. There is no high-quality level of evidence regarding the management for the various types of auricular trauma, which is why, further research is needed in this field.

The terminology Cauliflower ear refers to the appearance of external ear, sequelae to underlying primary inflammation/infection. Trauma and secondary infection or perichondritis being the most common cause of cauliflower ear, this article describes a case of unilateral cauliflower ear due to multibacillary leprosy. This case shows the importance of skin smears and the histopathological identification and classification of leprosy patients with unusual lesions.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this systematic review was to critically analyze infectious complications and treatment following transcartilaginous ear piercing.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE Pubmed database.
REVIEW METHODS: A MEDLINE PubMed database search using free text, including "ear chondritis," "ear perichondritis," "ear cartilage piercing," and "auricle piercing," yielded 483 titles. Based on set inclusion and exclusion criteria, the titles, abstracts, and full text articles were reviewed for inclusion and underwent data extraction. Pooled outcomes are reported.

OBJECTIVE: Auricular seroma is a cystic swelling filled with serous fluid. It occurs spontaneously or following trauma. Successful treatment of the seroma remains a challenge because this disease has a high propensity for recurrence.
