OBJECTIVE: This paper reports a series of patients with sporadic pinna perichondritis who presented to a district general hospital over a period of 10 years. The data examined included the causative organism, risk factors and pattern of antibiotic use.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis of diagnosed cases of pinna perichondritis from 2001 to 2012 was performed. A literature review of pinna perichondritis was carried out using Pubmed with the key words 'pinna perichondritis', 'pinna abscess', 'pinna infection' and 'piercing'.
RESULTS: Pinna perichondritis was more likely to result from chondral

OBJECTIVE: To report outcomes following incisionless otoplasty, a minimally invasive surgical technique that can be used to treat protruding ears.
METHODS: Two independent review authors retrospectively reviewed the electronic charts of consecutive patients (n=19) who underwent incisionless otoplasty by a single surgeon between October 2007 and June 2011 at McMaster Children's Hospital. Main outcome measures were pre- and post-operative protrusion measurements, and complication rates. Research Ethics Board approval was granted through Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University. Descript

Perichondritis is a condition characterized by pain, swelling and purulent discharge from the external ear, which may progress to a deformity of the pinna. The presence of co-morbidities such as diabetes mellitus may aggravate the situation. The main aetiological agent is Pseudomonas aeruginosa and treatment consists of antibiotics combined with surgical drainage of the ear. We present the case of a diabetic patient with recurrent perichondritis of the pinna treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with successful healing. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proved beneficial as adjunctive therapy of

BACKGROUND: Perichondritis of the auricle is a serious disease that may lead to residual deformity.
OBJECTIVES: To assess our experience with perichondritis in a large group of patients hospitalized with this entity.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied 114 patients who were admitted with perichondritis during 1987-2004, including their demographic details, medical history, current illness, etiology, pathogens and treatments.
RESULTS: The patients' mean age was 41.8 +/- 20.7 years. In more than half of the patients the etiology could not be determined. Forty-seven patients (41%) were treated

"Cauliflower ear" is a perichondritis of the auricular pavilion, usually caused by infection or repeated trauma. In children, this entity is considered infrequent. We present the case of a 10-year-old girl living in a child care institution with "cauliflower ear" that was interpreted as a possible sign of child abuse.

Acute auricular hematoma is common after blunt trauma to the side of the head. A network of vessels provides a rich blood supply to the ear, and the ear cartilage receives its nutrients from the overlying perichondrium. Prompt management of hematoma includes drainage and prevention of reaccumulation. If left untreated, an auricular hematoma can result in complications such as perichondritis, infection, and necrosis. Cauliflower ear may result from long-standing loss of blood supply to the ear cartilage and formation of neocartilage from disrupted perichondrium. Management of cauliflower ear in

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new treatment for perichondritis and haematoma of the pinna. At present, the existing treatment for these conditions is initially medical (which usually fails), followed by surgery (incision, drainage and compression to prevent recurrence) with accompanying medical management. However, the result is often a failure, resulting in partial or complete 'cauliflower ear' deformity.
PROCEDURE: The described treatment involves draining the site of infection and irrigating with streptomycin solution. The cavity is then filled with a solution of streptomycin, hyaluronidase and

Auricular perichondritis and fiogosis of the external auditory canal are not uncommon pathology of the ear. These inflammatory processes are often accompanied by reactive locoregional lymphadenopathy. An inadequate or insufficient systemic therapy may lead to the persistence of otalgia and of signs of flogosis. The administration of local intradermaltherapy allows a strengthening of the pharmacological effect and a reduction in the quantity of drug used. It provides a rapid improvement in the locoregional signs of infection.Intradermal injection is performed on two pretragral points, two retro

Four features, manifested in various combinations, characterise deformity in the burned ear: (i) the presence of scarred skin at the site of and surrounding the ear, with dramatic loss of skin elasticity; (ii) the presence of longitudinal scars of the pinna due to previous drainage of the perichondritis as an initial trial for saving the ear; (iii) absence of different components of the framework of the ear, mostly the helix/antihelix complex (the cartilage-containing part) with or without the ear lobule; (iv) scarred chest wall due to associated burns of the skin of the chest. In the face of

UNLABELLED: Piercing has become more and more popular among adolescents. The procedure is generally performed by unqualified professionals and carries its risk. Non-sterilized material or inappropiate hygiene increases the possibility of perichondritis and celulitis. The disease is characterized by erythema of the auricula pinna, unbearable pain and fever. Left untreated, the condition progresses with edema along the auricula and abscess formation that may result in ischemic necrosis and a cauliflower anesthetic deformation. The most common bacteria is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In cases with abs

BACKGROUND: Auricular or high helical ear piercing is an increasingly widespread fashion trend that is associated with an increased risk of potentially serious post-piercing complications such as auricular perichondritis.
CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old girl developed severe auricular perichondritis following piercing of the upper helical cartilage of her ear at a hairdressing salon. Four days post piercing, she returned to the same salon for a haircut during which the pierced site was manipulated. She presented to her family physician and was treated unsuccessfully with oral cephalexin. She was

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a study of patients presenting with perichondritis of the auricle and to analyse the possible aetiological factors responsible, the bacteriological agents involved, the treatment modalities and the complications of such infections.
SETTING: Academic department of otolaryngology.
DESIGN: A retrospective clinical study of patients treated over a five-year period.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-one patients with clinically proven perichondritis of the auricle, with or without diabetes mellitus (i.e. malignant otitis externa).
RESULTS: Based on the severity of the disease, otherwise

BACKGROUND: The popularity of high ear piercing has led to an increased incidence of perichondritis. Damage to the relatively avascular cartilage will make the ear prone to infection. The literature suggests that a piercing gun, mainly used by jewellers to pierce the lobule, may give excessive cartilaginous damage. Therefore some authors favour the piercing needle, as used in piercing studios. But until now, no comparative histological studies have been performed.
PURPOSE OF STUDY: To evaluate the extent of damage to ear cartilage using different piercing techniques.
METHODS: Twenty-two fres

Forty cases of external ear trauma have been studied during a period of three years from Jan '2001 to December 2004. It was observed that accidental trauma to the auricle may result in laceration, partial or complete loss of auricle. Injury of the tympanic membrane, temporal bone or facio maxillary region may be associated with auricular trauma. All wounds of auricle carry a risk of infection leading to perichondritis. Principles of successful treatment are conservation of tissue and prevention of infection.

Body piercing has become a fashionable trend in western culture. High ear piercing is common among the adolescent population and complications from this procedure although uncommon can be permanently disfiguring. We describe a case of perichondritis after high ear piercing in an adolescent male. A review of the history of body piercing, complications, risk factors, and treatment is presented.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative auricular perichondritis is a problematic and embarrassing surgical complication after an endaural approach tympanoplasty. However, a search through the literature showed only a few papers regarding postoperative auricular perichondritis, and the reported treatment experience is scarce. This study reviews the clinical aspects of postoperative auricular perichondritis and the different treatment methods.
METHODS: The medical records of 8 patients with postoperative auricular perichondritis over a 5-year period were reviewed. Five patients were treated using the wide e
