Lyme disease (LD) is the most prevalent tick-borne illness in the United States and Europe, caused by a spirochete transmitted through the bite of an infected Ixodes tick. In this report, we present a case of disseminated Lyme disease in a four-year-old female who presented with constitutional symptoms and a recurrent, migratory erythema migrans-like rash for one month. The subsequent onset of eye deviation and vision complaints prompted referral, which revealed bilateral optic nerve edema and a left abducens nerve (CN VI) palsy. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis demonstrated an elevated Lyme antib

BACKGROUND: Managing emerging infectious exposures in the context of urgent surgical intervention, where standard guidelines may not provide direct answer, can be challenging.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a unique case involving a 69-year-old female patient undergoing video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for biopsy-confirmed adenocarcinoma of the right lower lobe (RLL). During preoperative preparation, a live Ixodes tick was found embedded in the patient's right flank, directly over the intended surgical site, accompanied by a large erythematous rash suggestive of erythema migrans. Despite

Ticks carry various pathogens, including the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease (LD) in humans, and the Gram-negative bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum, which causes human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). These diseases pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. It is known that tick-borne diseases are typically accompanied by oxidative stress and inflammation, and consequently, other metabolic changes. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the modification of ROS- and enzyme-dependent metabolism of phospholipids and free polyunsaturated fatty acids (P

Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by different species belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. However, its true burden remains difficult to assess, partly due to the diagnostic variability of commercial assays. This study evaluated seroprevalence and seroconversion following tick bite, using four serological assays with distinct antigenic compositions. Participants provided blood samples within three days of the tick bite and three months after to assess seroconversion. We evaluated the seroprevalence, seroconversion, inter-assay va

Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a significant public health threat in the United States, particularly in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. Tick control operations are predominately focused on private residential properties. Surveys of publicly funded vector control programs have indicated that high use public lands may be viable targets for future tick control activities if funding is available. However, little is known about the feasibility of implementing tick control activities on these properties. We administered a survey to understand current tick control and tick bite prevention educat

INTRODUCTION: Tick observation data collected through citizen science is increasingly utilised to map tick-borne infection risk areas indirectly, that is, based on the rate of tick encounters or occurrence of ticks. However, direct associations between tick observations and Lyme borreliosis (LB) cases have received little attention. In the current study, associations between weekly tick observations and LB cases were studied on a nationwide scale in Finland, in order to determine if tick observations precede cases in a predictable manner, and whether tick observations could be used to predict

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), is a significant public health concern in North America, with approximately 500 000 cases reported annually in the United States. The dissemination of B. burgdorferi from the initial tick bite site to various tissues is facilitated by surface adhesins that bind to extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin (Fn). This study investigates the binding dynamics of B. burgdorferi surface proteins RevA, BBK32, BmpA, OspA, FlaB, and OspC to Fn using atomic force microscopy-based single-molecule force spectroscopy. Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), transmitted through tick vectors, induces Lyme arthritis (LA), with disease progression intimately correlated with host genetic characteristics. Laboratory investigations have demonstrated marked disparities in infection responses among distinct mouse strains: C57BL/6 mice have mild arthritis and rapid tissue repair, whereas C3H mice exhibit severe arthritic manifestations. Comparing these strains has helped identify genetic and immune factors important for arthritis development. In this study, female C57BL/6 and C3H mice were inoculated with Bb via bilateral footpad

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic reinfections with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato occur, but their clinical and microbiologic characteristics are insufficiently defined. It, therefore, remains unclear whether having had a primary infection influences the presentation or course of reinfection.
METHODS: We compared the clinical and microbiologic findings in patients with primary infection versus reinfection, with each episode presenting with erythema migrans (EM). The analysis included a cohort of patients diagnosed with EM between 1990 and 2014 at an outpatient clinic in Slovenia.
RESULTS: A total of

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the proportion of patients with newly diagnosed cardiac conduction disorders requiring pacemaker implantation who have serological findings consistent with probable Lyme carditis in endemic northern Serbia.
METHODS: Adults presenting with new conduction disorders and scheduled for permanent pacing were enrolled and provided serum at baseline and 4-week follow-up. Anti-Borrelia immunoglobulin (Ig)G was assessed using a two-tier algorithm (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay screening, immunoblot confirmation). Probable Lyme carditis was defined as IgG ser

Many non-model rodent species are inaccessible to genetic engineering due to our limited understanding of their reproductive biology. Here, we present a low-cost, camera-based estrous-tracking technology that enables transgenesis in the white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus, a key reservoir for Lyme disease. We demonstrate the efficient generation of pregnant and pseudopregnant mice via timed ovulation, provide protocols for embryo generation, cultivation, microinjection, and transplantation as well as an accurate developmental timeline, and report the first engineered Peromyscus. In recent years, the practice of apitherapy has experienced a renaissance as there has been an exponential growth in the scientific literature regarding this topic. Bee Venom Therapy (BVT) is only 1 aspect in the broad field of apitherapy and has shown to have application in oncology. One of the popular applications of BVT is as a treatment in Lyme disease in humans. The article focuses mainly on using BVT and intravenous honey infusion against a variety of cancer cells. Further clinical studies are needed to know about the efficacy of apitherapy in the fight against cancer in exotic animals.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The 2020 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guidelines recommend a single 200 mg dose of doxycycline within 72 h of tick removal after a high-risk bite for Lyme disease prophylaxis. However, limited data are available on prescribing practices related to this recommendation in highly endemic Lyme disease areas.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review on adult patients (aged ≥ 18 years) who received a single dose of oral doxycycline for Lyme disease prevention for the period 2022-2024 within a rural Wisconsin health system. Patient and provider presc

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, elicits a robust type I interferon (IFN-I) response that has been strongly associated with chronic inflammatory manifestations such as Lyme arthritis. Although IFN-I is induced early after infection, its functional contribution during the initial stages of B. burgdorferi infection has remained unclear. Here, we identify a critical protective role for IFN-I signaling in the early control of B. burgdorferi. At 5 days post-infection, mice lacking the IFN-I interferon receptor (IFNAR1) exhibited markedly elevated spirochetal burdens at the

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne infection in North America and Europe, yet current two-tier serologic testing shows poor sensitivity during early infection when antibiotic treatment is most effective. We developed and validated a single-tier multiplex immunoassay that combines ten Borrelia burgdorferi antigens with machine-learning classification to detect antibody responses across all disease stages. A total of 364 cases were obtained, which included well characterized prospective blood samples obtained during early infection. In a cohort of samples from the Johns Hopkins Univers

The skin lesion erythema migrans (EM) is the first clinical sign of Lyme disease, an infection due to the tick-transmitted bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb). Previously, we used scRNA-Seq to characterize the cutaneous immune response in the EM lesion, focusing on B cells. Here, with an expanded sample size, we profiled T cell responses in EM lesions compared to autologous uninvolved skin. In addition to CD4+ T cell subsets known to be abundant in the EM lesion, we identified clonally expanded CD8+GZMK+IFNG+ T cells that comprised cells with high or intermediate IFNG expression. These cells e

Lyme disease (LD) is caused by a bacterial genospecies complex named Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), which includes B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (B.b.s.s). Originally described in North America, LD has also been described in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, and in Eurasia. Different B.b.s.l. species, transmitted through geographically diverse tick vectors, are associated with different clinical presentations of the disease. In recent years, the incidence and the endemic range of LD have steadily expanded to include areas of the world with tropical climate, including Latin Americ

The pressing need for rapid, direct diagnostic tests for infectious diseases is exemplified by Lyme disease. Human cases of this tick-vectored bacterial infection continue to rise globally, yet the conventional laboratory diagnostic is inadequate in capturing early disease, treatment outcome, and reinfection. Direct detection of a pathogen marker from human biological fluid is a coveted strategy that has, until now, presented immense challenges due to the low circulating burden of the Lyme Borrelia pathogen. The current study demonstrates specific, label-free, quantitative, real-time sensing o

Entomopathogenic fungi and bacteria offer promising alternatives to chemical insecticides for controlling mosquitoes and ticks-key vectors of malaria and Lyme disease. However, their efficacy largely depends on immune interactions between pathogens and hosts. Here, we focus on mosquitoes and ticks as representative disease vectors and dissect conserved and divergent immune responses, from physical barriers to cellular defenses and key humoral pathways, with mechanistic insights informed by insect model systems. Furthermore, we elucidate diverse virulence and immune evasion strategies that enab

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States and Europe. Although antibiotics effectively treat most cases, an estimated 10-20% of patients develop post-treatment Lyme disease (PTLD), a chronic syndrome marked by fatigue, pain, cognitive difficulties, mood disturbance, and reduced quality of life. There are no established treatments for PTLD. The serotonin 2A receptor agonist psychedelic psilocybin has recently shown potential antidepressant and anxiolytic effects in clinical trials as well as preliminary evidence for
