Variants in CEP135 Cause Congenital Microcephaly and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.

INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disorder of motile ciliary dysfunction causing chronic respiratory infections, may also rarely present with aspects of non-motile ciliary dysfunction, including retinitis, central nervous system malformations, skeletal dysplasia, and sensorineural hearing loss. However, congenital microcephaly has not been previously associated with PCD. METHODS: We identified three children with congenital microcephaly and chronic respiratory disease consistent with PCD. Comprehensive PCD diagnostic testing and whole exome sequencing were performed. Character

Incidence and Cost of Otitis Media in High-income and Low- and Middle-income Countries.

BACKGROUND: The estimated global incidence of acute otitis media (AOM) is >700 million episodes per year, with direct costs of billions of United States Dollars. This economic burden warrants continued investment in vaccine development against otopathogens. To aid in these decisions, an updated estimate of the incidence and costs of AOM and common sequelae is provided. METHODS: A structured search using PubMed and Google Scholar that included English-language articles published from January 2000 to April 2024 was conducted using keywords and Boolean operators. Costs were adjusted to 2025 Unit

Changing Trends in the Fungal Aetiology of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and Antifungal Susceptibility Patterns of Isolated Fungi: A Pilot Study From a Tertiary Care Centre in Central India.

Introduction Middle-ear and mastoid mucosal inflammation that persists for at least six weeks with discharge is known as chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). It is prevalent in India, and fungal infections contribute to a notable proportion of cases. Irrational use of steroids and antibiotics is associated with increased fungal isolates. This study aims to evaluate the presence, profile, and antifungal susceptibility (AFST) of fungi in CSOM patients, using Sensititre™ YeastOne® (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) colorimetric broth microdilution for yeasts and disk diffusion for m

Exploring the Link Between Bacterial Biofilm and Disease Severity in Cholesteatoma-Associated CSOM.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) with cholesteatoma is a potentially dangerous condition that can lead to extracranial and intracranial complications. Bacteria associated with CSOM cholesteatoma frequently produce biofilms, which contribute to antibiotic resistance and accelerate disease progression. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the tertiary teaching hospital of Hasanuddin University, its affiliated hospitals, and the Hasanuddin University Medical Research Center (HUM-RC) between March 2024 and April 2025. Patients diagnosed with CSOM cholesteatoma wh

First Report of a Multidrug-Resistant Mammaliicoccus sciuri Strain Harboring exhB Isolated from an Alpaca with an Intracranial Abscess.

Intracranial abscesses are extremely rare in alpacas, and previously reported cases have lacked systematic etiological characterization. The virulence characteristics of Mammaliicoccus sciuri (formerly Staphylococcus sciuri) in alpaca intracranial infections remain unclear. We investigated an alpaca with chronic otitis media and an intracranial abscess. Bacteria were recovered from intracranial purulent material and several other sites. A representative isolate was designated CS234. It was identified as M. sciuri by 16S rDNA sequencing and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Average nucleotide iden

Serum Lipid Profile as a Predictor of Recurrence in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media: A Retrospective Electronic Health Record-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a major cause of preventable hearing loss, particularly in resource-limited, semi-urban healthcare settings where advanced radiological imaging is often unavailable for recurrence risk stratification. Systemic dyslipidemia has been mechanistically linked to mucosal inflammation and epithelial dysfunction, but its association with CSOM recurrence has not been directly examined. This study investigated the clinical utility of fasting serum lipid profiles as predictors of recurrence in patients with CSOM. METHODS: We conducted a retrospectiv

Active learning for the accelerated discovery of complex concentrated NiCoCr alloys in additive manufacturing.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is closely associated with climate change and, in particular, with global warming. In addition to melting of ice and snow, rising sea level, and flooding of coastal areas, global warming is leading to a tropicalization of temperate marine ecosystems. Moreover, the effects of air pollution on airway and lung diseases are well documented as reported by the World Allergy Organization. METHODS: Scientific literature was searched for studies investigating the effect of the interaction between air pollution and climate change on

Maternal metabolomic signatures for risk of preterm and early term birth in African American women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compared to healthy controls, adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are anemic, and therefore have higher cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) to maintain brain oxygenation. They also demonstrate comparatively more cognitive deficits due to either overt strokes or silent cerebral ischemia. However, there are few correlative studies between CBF and cognitive deficits, specifically processing speed in SCD. Such studies are important to develop biomarkers of central brain processing and ischemia for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluating the effectiveness of

When Otorrhea Hides Something Unexpected: A Challenging Case Report.

Tuberculosis remains a major global health concern, predominantly in low and middle-income countries. Tuberculous otitis media (TOM) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, representing a small fraction of tuberculosis and chronic suppurative otitis media cases. The nonspecific and indolent presentation of TOM, besides its rarity, often results in delayed diagnosis, mainly in regions with a low tuberculosis prevalence, with increased risk of irreversible complications. We report a case of TOM in a 36-year-old Portuguese woman with a four-month history of right ear pain, otorrhea, obstru

Bacteriological Profile, Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns, and Genotypic Characterization of Drug-Resistant Organisms in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media at a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a major cause of preventable hearing loss, particularly in developing countries. The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens has made empirical antibiotic therapy increasingly challenging. This study aimed to investigate the bacteriological profile, antimicrobial resistance pattern, and genotypic characteristics of drug-resistant bacterial isolates from patients with CSOM in a tertiary care setting. Microbial Spectrum of Cholesteatomatous Otitis Media and Its Correlation With Cholesteatoma Staging: A Cross-Sectional Analytical Study.

BACKGROUND: Cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media is a locally destructive condition in which persistent bacterial and fungal infection is thought to cause chronic inflammation and osteolytic activity, driving cholesteatoma progression; however, whether the microbial profile correlates with disease severity remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the microbiological profile of cholesteatomatous otitis media and evaluate its relationship with cholesteatoma stage as defined by the European Academy of Otology and Neurotology/Japan Otological Society (EAONO/JOS) staging syste
