The rabies tissue culture infection test (RTCIT) and rapid rabies enzyme immunodiagnosis (RREID) were compared to the fluorescent-antibody test (FAT) with field specimens. At the French National Reference Center for Rabies, 15,248 specimens were analyzed by FAT and RTCIT, and 2,290 of those specimens were also tested by RREID; 818 other specimens were tested by FAT and RREID in 12 laboratories located in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from overdose of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) has been reported but is not well known. During a 1-year period, 81 patients with serious overdose from tranquilizers and other psychotropic drugs were examined. TCA alone induced overdose in 30 patients or were combined with other drugs in 26 patients. Twenty-five (31%) patients had overdose from drugs other than TCA. A 51-year-old man presented with Staphylococcus aureus septicaemia. He improved initially but died suddenly on day 8 of his hospital admission. Post-mortem examination revealed multiple lesions of polyarteritis nodosa which were the cause of death. We are unaware of any other case of polyarteritis nodosa that presented with Staphylococcus aureus septicaemia. These two conditions have a number of similar clinical characteristics and are difficult to distinguish unless the association is considered.

Over 2,000 recent clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria were tested at five medical centers for susceptibility to ticarcillin, ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid, clindamycin, and metronidazole. At 64 micrograms/ml, ticarcillin inhibited 92% of all isolates, but 98% were inhibited at this concentration when 2 micrograms/ml of clavulanic acid was added. With different Bacteroides species, clavulanic acid reduced ticarcillin MICs 2- to 32-fold; other anaerobic species were not significantly affected.

For choosing a protocol of determination of bactericidal activity of antiseptic and disinfectant products, we have compared a method using an MS2 Abbott system and the classic methods: membrane filtration and dilution-method by transfer loops. The bactericidal-activity of 12 antiseptic solutions are determined. The results shown that there was no significative difference between the automated system and AFNOR specifications. The dilution-method by transfer loops gave higher bactericidal concentrations than the two other methods.

Responses to tumors induced by three dilutions of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) were studied in UNH 105, a noninbred line of New Hampshire chickens. Single-male matings produced progeny of three B genotypes: B23/B23 (tumor regressor) and B23/B24 and B24/B24 (tumor progressors). A total of 223 6-wk-old chicks were wingweb inoculated with one of three dilutions (10(-3), 4 X 10(-3), and 10(-4)) of a pseudotype of Bryan high titer RSV designated as BH RSV (RAV-1). A tumor profile index (TPI), an indicator of antitumor response, was assigned to each chick based on six postinoculation tumor size scores.

Over a 24-month period, 274 patients with community-acquired pneumonia were hospitalized in Departments of Medicine at hospitals in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse.
