OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 3D anatomy of the ET and its surrounding tissues in cases with or without patulous Eustachian tube (ET) using CT with the multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) technique.

This article reports on 21 long-term (10 years) survivors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, divided into 2 groups: those subjected to an inflation-deflation test and a clearance function test in a longitudinal study, and those receiving sonotubometry in a cross-sectional study. Autophonia, the hyperperception of one's own voice and breathing, is one of the consequences of rapid weight loss and is explained within the syndrome of the patulous eustachian tube. We report on a female adolescent, who presented to an otologist for autophonia and was finally diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. The occurrence and relevance of this symptom in eating-disorder patients is discussed.

Direct middle ear (ME) pressure measurements during 24 h and tubal function tests were performed on 11 subjects with the clinical diagnosis patulous Eustachian tube (PET). The pressure was recorded from the ME via a perforation in the tympanic membrane. A patient evaluated for otitis media had a bizarre tympanogram with a "sawtooth" configuration. Acute otitis media with a pinpoint perforation was diagnosed. After resolution of the acute infection, a 2-mm diameter perforation remained and the presence of a patulous eustachian tube was documented. Tympanoplasty was eventually required, after which a normal tympanogram was recorded. Our interpretation of the tympanogram is discussed and the literature reviewed.

This paper provides a brief review of the literature regarding the patulous eustachian tube (PET), its symptoms, precipitating conditions, incidence, diagnosis, and current medical management.
