OBJECTIVE: Patulous eustachian tube (PET) is currently treated using a variety of conservative or surgical approaches. To further elucidate the pathology of PET and to establish new therapies, the development of an animal model is necessary. The objective of this study was to develop a highly reproducible and sustainable rat model of PET by mandibular nerve resection.
METHODS: Sixteen rats underwent mandibular nerve resection. Following an external incision, the main trunk of the mandibular nerve at the foramen ovale was identified in the pterygoid fossa, and its branches were resected. This

Obstructive and patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction provide a significant diagnostic and management challenge. The development of new treatments such as balloon Eustachian tuboplasty has generated renewed interest in measuring Eustachian tube function, as a method of selecting appropriate patients for intervention, and measuring their treatment outcomes. This review summarises recent findings relating to Eustachian tube function assessment. Increasingly it is recognised that patient reported outcome measures based on symptoms are highly non-specific and non-diagnostic, and clinical assessment

Symptoms of patulous Eustachian tube (ET), particularly autophony, can overlap with other conditions, and can arise from a variety of causes. We review the pathophysiology of "speech hyper-resonance syndromes", and possible mechanisms, including resonances in the tympanic membrane, Eustachian tube and nasopharynx. Treatment can be directed at the eardrum or the ET depending on site of pathology. We review typical presentations, examination findings, and useful clinical tests to distinguish PET from other disorders, and our philosophy of management.

The Eustachian tube protects against secretion, germs and sound pressure from the nasopharynx, it acts as a drain, and serves pressure equalization in both directions so that the ear drum and sound-conducting apparatus can vibrate optimally. The incidence of Eustachian tube dysfunction in adults is about 1%, in children almost 40%. Symptoms are often unspecific. For diagnosis, the Eustachian tube score (ETS-5) can be used in patients with a perforated ear drum, and the ETS-7 score in patients with intact ear drum. Adenoid hypertrophy is a frequent cause of obstructive tube dysfunction in child

The patulous Eustachian tube syndrome was described more than 150 years ago, but up to the present time some of its aspects continue to be a challenge for both fundamental and clinical medicine. Certain issues of etiology and pathogenesis of this condition have until recently remained unclear which probably accounts for the failure of choosing the adequate methods for its medical correction. Despite the seemingly broad spectrum of the modern tools for the purpose including first and foremost the endoscopic and radiological techniques, verification of the patulous Eustachian tube may encounter

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patulous Eustachian tube (PET) causes troublesome autophony. We treated PET using tragal cartilage chip insertion to fill in the concavity within the tubal valve and evaluated the feasibility of this method.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study used a prospective design. Eleven patients with PET disorder were included. Tragal cartilage chip insertion via a transcanal approach into the Eustachian tube (ET) was performed in 14 ears of those patients. They were followed-up for at least 12 months after surgery and were evaluated by symptom questionnaire scores.
RESULTS: Th

BACKGROUND: Patulous Eustachian tube is a distressing condition characterised by chronic patency of the Eustachian tube and its failure to close. Patients typically present with symptoms of autophony and aural fullness. In patients requiring surgical intervention, a variety of different procedures have been demonstrated (both transtympanic and endonasal), with limited success. Evidence of the effectiveness of a number of surgical interventions is limited to small case series only.
OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a novel treatment for patulous Eustachian tube using a 3 mm VortX Diamond endovas
