BACKGROUND: Hyperpneumatisation of the skull base and upper cervical vertebrae is a very rare condition of uncertain aetiology and pathophysiology.
CASE REPORT: A case of extensive hyperpneumatisation of the craniocervical junction and upper three cervical vertebrae is described, in a patient who habitually performed the Valsalva manoeuvre to relieve the symptoms of a patulous eustachian tube. Reported symptoms of ear, neck and shoulder pain deteriorated after minor head trauma. There was a drastic radiological and clinical improvement after ceasing to perform the Valsalva manoeuvre.

BACKGROUND: Application of one or several paper patches on the tympanic membrane can improve autophony and other symptoms in some patients with a patulous eustachian tube.
METHOD: The charts of 21 patients treated for patulous eustachian tube syndrome between 2006 and 2011 were studied for subjective improvement of symptoms following the application of paper patches.
RESULTS: Paper patching of the tympanic membrane provided symptomatic relief in 76.2 per cent of patients; relief was permanent in 50 per cent of these patients.
CONCLUSION: Paper patching of the tympanic membrane is a simple a

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of patulous eustachian tube which occurred after percutaneous balloon microcompression of the Gasserian ganglion.
METHOD: Retrospective case review.
RESULTS: A 41-year-old man was referred to our audiovestibular medicine department following episodes of autophony. These symptoms appeared two weeks after percutaneous balloon microcompression performed to treat severe trigeminal neuralgia secondary to multiple sclerosis. A diagnosis of patulous eustachian tube was indicated by clinical examination and tympanometry. The symptoms were present for less than six months

OBJECTIVE: Patulous eustachian tube (PET) can have a significant negative impact on a patient's quality of life. Previous work has demonstrated that temporarily mass loading and stiffening the tympanic membrane significantly reduces these symptoms. This study examined KTP laser myringoplasty (LM) and cartilage tympanoplasty (CT) as a means to manipulate the tympanic membrane to alleviate PET symptoms.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Academic tertiary care referral hospital.
PATIENTS: Patients (n = 20) were identified from the senior authors' (M.B.) specialty eustachian tub

OBJECTIVE: The Eustachian tube is difficult to evaluate because it is located deep in the head. However, the introduction of 320-row area detector CT has made it possible to evaluate this region. In the present study, movement of the Eustachian tube during sniffing was visualized using area detector CT in patients with patulous Eustachian tube.
METHODS: Four patients with patulous Eustachian tube were examined using an area detector CT scanner (Aquilion ONE, Toshiba). This scanner supports 320-row scanning of 0.5-mm slices at up to 0.275 s/rot., eliminating temporal mismatch between various p

BACKGROUND: Patulous eustachian tube (pET) can result in transmission of sound from the pharynx to the middle ear (ME) via an abnormally patent ET. The objective of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility of a reversible transnasal procedure for pET using an occluded silastic catheter to close the ET.
METHODS: Ten sides were evaluated in five cadaver heads. Size 14, 16, and 18G catheters were occluded with bone wax to create a semirigid solid tube. They were placed transnasally, under endoscopic guidance through the ET orifice to span the entire ET length. Proper placement in the

A patulous eustachian tube (tuba aperta) may lead to an enormous reduction in quality of life. A patulous eustachian tube can cause symptoms such as autophony, breath synchronous tinnitus, pressure sensation in the ear, and hearing loss. In combination with so-called "sniffing", it can trigger the development of cholesteatoma. Due to the diffuse symptoms the correct diagnosis of this disease can be challenging. A patulous eustachian tube can be best diagnosed through a well-structured examination including patient history, physical examination with thorough observation of movements of the tymp

Patulous Eustachian tube (PET) is a common condition that produces symptoms of aural fullness and autophony. We describe a Parkinson's disease (PD) patient that experienced a reversible bilateral patulous (hyperpatent) Eustachian tube syndrome induced by treatment with amantadine hydrochloride. The clinical features, relevant anatomy and physiology, and associated risk factors for PET are reviewed.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) syndrome has been called the great otologic mimicker because its presentation overlaps with otosclerosis, Meniere's disease, perilymphatic fistula, and patulous eustachian tube. A valuable examination finding that can help distinguish SSCD syndrome from other pathologic conditions is the presence of Hennebert's sign, in which pressure changes in the external auditory canal evoke stereotyped eye movements that align in the plane of the dehiscent semicircular canal. This video case report demonstrates Hennebert's sign associated with SSCD syndrome an

Eustachian tube is normally closed, but the valve of the eustachian tube may occasionally or permanently be left unclosed, resulting in a condition called patulous eustachian tube (tuba aperta). Symptoms caused by patulous eustachian tube, such as locking of the ear, own voice echo (autophony) and sensation of edema or pressure may be inconvenient. In practice, typical anamnesis is sufficient for diagnosis. If the inconvenience is disturbing to the patient, humidification therapies through the nose can be applied. In severe cases, surgical treatments may also be considered.

BACKGROUND: Patulous Eustachian tube is the uncommon condition of a persistently open Eustachian tube, which causes the disturbing symptoms of autophony and respiratory-synchronous tinnitus. We review this condition and propose a specific evaluation protocol that can be performed quickly and easily using standard audiologic test equipment. We have used this protocol in the evaluation of a number of patients and will discuss our findings.
PURPOSE: To establish a standardized protocol for the audiologic evaluation of patulous Eustachian tube using a standard clinical tympanometer and to establi

OBJECTIVE: Autophony, or the unusually loud or disturbing sound of a patient's own voice, can be a prominent and disabling symptom of superior canal dehiscence (SCD) syndrome. The current study measures autophony symptoms before and after SCD plugging to quantify the benefits of surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients undergoing SCD plugging between September 2007 and October 2008 completed a questionnaire before and 3 months after surgery. The questionnaire consisted of 26 statements to assess the disability caused by the sound of the patient's own voice. Patients graded each item on a scale from 0
