Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in pediatric patients, particularly those with cochlear implants (CI) seem to be at higher risk for complications. The aim of this study is to propose a diagnostic and treatment algorithm by analyzing common symptoms, incidence, microbiology, and management of AM in pediatric CI patients. This systematic review includes 20 studies and four own cases, therefore 86 pediatric CI patients diagnosed with AM were enrolled. The research databases Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literatu

BACKGROUND: Acute mastoiditis (AM) is the most common complication of acute otitis media (AOM) and could lead to serious complications if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Nowadays, there is no definitive consensus about the diagnostic algorithm and the optimal therapeutic management for patients with AM. The purpose of this study is to analyze the management of children admitted for AM and complicated AM (CAM) in a referral children's hospital, evaluating differences in clinical presentation and management to outline a diagnostic and therapeutic pathway. Moreover, the incidence o

UNLABELLED: Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare but serious complication of acute mastoiditis in children. Early diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms. This study aimed to identify clinical and laboratory predictors of CSVT in children with mastoiditis to support timely imaging and treatment. We performed a retrospective case-control study across two university-affiliated centers from 1999 to 2022 of children with acute mastoiditis who underwent neuroimaging. Clinical, laboratory, imaging, and treatment data from 81 children (40 with CSVT and 41 without) were com

Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type-1 is frequently associated with otorhinolaryngological manifestations, most notably a high prevalence of otitis media. Although multiple case reports have documented an increased prevalence of acute otitis media and mastoiditis in patients with LAD-1, no clinical or experimental studies have fully elucidated the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this association. Despite guideline recommendations for urgent antibiotic therapy in immunocompromised patients with acute otitis media, a standardized treatment protocol for its complications remains lacking.

Background: Despite the widespread use of antibiotics, acute mastoiditis (AM) and related complications resulting from acute purulent otitis media continue to occur, predominantly in children. Although numerous studies have focused on the pathogenesis, aetiological agents, and treatment of AM, comprehensive investigations of the long-term outcomes of AM and the physiological consequences of surgical intervention in the temporal bone are lacking. Methods: Thirty patients who had undergone mastoidectomy for acute mastoiditis at a median age of 2.12 years were invited for evaluation at least five

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial empyemas (IEs) are rare but severe complications of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) infections, defined as purulent collections in the normally virtual meningeal spaces. IEs can be classified as sinogenic (S-IE) or otogenic (O-IE), according to the initial infection. These life-threatening complications can entail long-term neurological disabilities. Few studies have described their characteristics, and cohorts are usually small and heterogeneous. In the Greater Paris area, all cases of pediatric IE are referred to the authors' center. The aim of this study was to describe

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media (OM) emerges as a prevalent complication following CI surgery, because OM typically has an elevated incidence in younger ages. We retrospectively analyzed pediatric patients who underwent CI surgery in our clinic, focusing on the management of Acute Otitis Media (AOM), Acute Mastoiditis (AM), and Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) in the postoperative period.
METHODS: We assessed 94 CI surgeries performed in 59 pediatric patients between January 2020 and November 2023. We examined the duration of conditions, the affected ears, and the treatment approaches used.

INTRODUCTION: Endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is a rare neoplasm that exhibits aggressive growth primarily in the endolymphatic capsule and can potentially affect nearby neurovascular structures. The diagnosis of ELST poses challenges due to its low prevalence, gradual progression, and nonspecific symptomatology. It is currently believed that prompt surgical intervention is recommended for endolymphatic sac tumors upon diagnosis. In cases where the lesion is complex or in close proximity to vital blood vessels and nerves, making complete resection challenging, adjuvant therapy may be employed p

Idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis (IHP) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by fibrotic thickening of the dura mater. The etiology of IHP is currently unknown; however, IHP often mimics other inflammatory conditions (causes of secondary hypertrophic pachymeningitis) including neurosarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and IgG4-related disease. IHP manifests clinically with a spectrum of neurologic symptoms, including headache, paresthesia, cranial nerve (CN) palsies, and seizures. Here, we discuss the diagnosis and management of a patient presenting with

A recommendation from a series of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) ear and hearing health hui was to summarise literature in ear, hearing, and vestibular health to inform future strategic directions. We aimed to conduct a scoping review of ear, hearing, and vestibular health literature in NZ over the past 50 years, with a particular focus on equity research in underserved communities. The review was undertaken using PRISMA guidelines and managed using Covidence. Several databases were searched, and data charting and extraction processes occurred for consensus. Peer-reviewed studies (n = 77) were exam

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is a rare and chronic clinical disease characterized by thickening of the dura mater, leading to persistent headache, cranial neuropathy, seizures, and other neurological symptoms. Immune-mediated causes, particularly antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis and IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), are among the most common etiologies. We report a case of a 54-year-old female with recurrent headache, blepharoptosis, hearing loss, and markedly elevated inflammatory markers. Blood tests, and serum levels of IgG4 were within normal ranges. Cont

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media, is a chronic inflammation and often polymicrobial infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity. It is characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Antibiotics and antiseptics kill or inhibit the micro-organisms that may be responsible for the infection. Antibiotics can be applied topically or administered systemically via the oral or injection route. Antiseptics are always directly applie
