Bezold's abscess (BA) is a severe and rare extracranial complication of suppurative acute mastoiditis. The diagnosis of BA requires a high index of suspicion due to its rarity. In this study, we present a rare case of BA, in addition to a review of literature over 20 years. We searched for all cases in English literature from 2000 to 2020 in PubMed and found 27 cases (28 cases including the current case). BA was more prevalent in males (17/28, 60.7%) and adults (17/28, 60.7%). Of the 28 cases, six were associated with cholesteatoma and another six cases occurred with concomitant sinus thrombos

OBJECTIVE: Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) requires a relatively high radiation dose to produce high-resolution images required to define surgical anatomy. In the acute setting, the need for this detailed evaluation of temporal bone pathology may not be required for nonsurgical management and clinical decision-making. We performed a retrospective review of the clinical characteristics and subsequent management of children who underwent CT of the temporal bone with the goal of optimizing clinical decision-making and mitigating the risks of radiation exposure in children.
METHODS: We inc

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis of the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a rare complication of acute middle ear infection. Presentation is elusive and could be easily missed. Often diagnosis is made only with consequential development of TMJ ankylosis. This study intends to characterize patients and course of disease and suggest a diagnostic and therapeutic strategy.
METHODS: Retrospective review of all children diagnosed with TMJ arthritis and/or TMJ ankylosis secondary to acute middle ear infection, treated in a tertiary pediatric medical center between the years 2005 and 2021.
RESULT: Seve

Ventriculitis is a rare intracranial disease with potentially life-threatening consequences. Here, we present a case of acute mastoiditis that progressed to Haemophilus influenzae meningitis evolving to ventriculitis. This case was complicated by hydrocephalus that subsequently required the placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. In patients presenting with mastoiditis, it is imperative to initiate early and appropriate treatment to prevent disease progression and devastating outcomes. We aim to increase recognition of potential complications and encourage childhood vaccination of Haemophil

Acute mastoiditis is a common consequence of acute otitis media and may lead to intracranial complications. Common clinical presentations include otological complaints (i.e., otorrhea, otalgia, fever). Intracranial complication remains a rare manifestation of middle ear infection. We present the case of a child who presented with non-specific symptoms without any otological complaints. Prompt clinical assessment and imaging revealed an otogenic brain abscess with concurrent mastoiditis. Management of this child required both medical and surgical treatment by a multidisciplinary team.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis and ankylosis represent unusual but potential complications of ear suppuration, especially in children. We performed a review of the literature of pediatric otogenic TMJ arthritis and ankylosis, discussing their clinical and radiological features, their mechanism of infection spread, and the importance of a prompt diagnosis and treatment. We additionally describe a case of TMJ ankylosis following acute mastoiditis in a 4-year-old female patient.
METHODS: A search of English literature from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 2021 was performed o

OBJECTIVES: The neurotologic literature commonly describes venous sinus thrombosis as a complication of mastoiditis. However, thrombosis of the internal carotid artery in the setting of mastoiditis is rarely described. We aim to document a case of carotid artery thrombosis in a patient presenting with mastoiditis.
METHODS: We describe this case and review relevant literature.
RESULTS: A renal transplant patient was transferred to our hospital with a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarct due to acute mastoiditis. Examination demonstrated middle ear effusion and radiologic workup confirmed

OBJECTIVES: Sinus venous thrombosis (SVT) is a rare complication of acute otitis media (AOM) with acute mastoiditis (AM), which during recent years has been associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum (Fn) infection. Our objective was to review clinical, microbiologic, and hematologic features of paediatric otogenic SVT, with a specific focus on the role of Fn.
METHODS: A retrospective database review in a tertiary paediatric hospital between 2000-2019.
RESULTS: Fifty children aged 6-155 months were treated for AM with SVT. Forty-seven (94%) underwent cortical mastoidectomy. Forty-six children

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant produces more symptoms in the upper respiratory tract than in the lower respiratory tract. This form of "common cold" can cause inflammation of the oropharynx and the Eustachian tube, leading to the multiplication of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae in the oropharynx. Eustachian tube dysfunction facilitates migration of these bacteria to the middle ear, causing inflammation and infection (otitis media), which in turn could lead to further complications such as acute mastoiditis and meningitis.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in children is a rare complication of acute mastoiditis that can potentially be fatal. Clinical expertise is essential for early diagnosis and management due to its subtle course. We present the first known case of paediatric acute mastoiditis with venous sinus thrombosis caused by Shewanella algae and Actinomyces europaeus . A 17-year-old male presented clinical signs of right acute otitis media and mastoiditis. Brain computed tomography showed mastoid opacification, cerebral sinus thrombosis and an extradural collection. Microbiology revealed the presence of

INTRODUCTION: The indigenous populations of the Arctic are prone to middle ear infections starting with an early age first episode, followed by frequent episodes of acute otitis media (AOM) during childhood. A high proportion develop chronic otitis media. Acute mastoiditis is a serious complication of AOM in childhood with postauricular swelling, erythema, and tenderness, protrusion of the auricle, high fever and general malaise. The disease may protrude intracranially. The incidence rates for acute mastoiditis in the Western world range from 1.2 to 4.2 cases/100 000 per year. There exists no

Mastoid air cell fluid is a commonly seen, but often dismissed finding. Given the location of the mastoid portion of the temporal bone and its location adjacent to vital structures, a careful evaluation is important for the emergency radiologist. While occasionally benign, fluid within the mastoid air cells can be an early sign of more severe pathology, and familiarity of regional anatomy allows for early identification of disease spread. This article describes the important anatomy, the common pathologies, and a radiologic approach to assessing the mastoid air cells in order to guide referrin

Acute mastoiditis in a newborn complicated by the presence of facial nerve palsy is an alarming finding requiring rapid assessment and further investigation. Such an early presentation should point the clinician towards an underlying systemic pathology or congenital anatomical abnormality. Facial nerve involvement indicates severe infection and possible dehiscence of the facial canal. Although more frequent in children, it is rare in neonates. We would like to share our experience in managing the youngest known presentation of otomastoiditis at four days of life. The patient presented with oto

Venous thrombosis is a potentially life-threatening condition with varied aetiology. First described in 1912 as a complication of peritonsillar abscess, internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombosis is a rare entity in children with very few cases reported until now. Among the leading causes of this condition are prolonged use of IJV for venous access and central venous catheterisation, acute mastoiditis and Lemierre's syndrome.1 IJV thrombosis can also occur as a complication of head and neck infections, but rarely appears as its first presentation. The clinical manifestations are often vague and am
