Histopathological studies of the temporal bones in Hurler's disease [mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IH].

The structural basis of the combined conductive and sensorineural deafness has been described in two patients with Hurler's disease. All parts of the ear contained numerous large vacuolated Hurler cells, the vacuoles being distended lysosomes from which accumulated glycosaminoglycans had been dissolved during fixation of the tissue. The external and middle ears also showed chronic inflammation. There was resorption of the bone in the mastoid process by masses of Hurler cells and abnormal new bone with prominent cement lines. The blood vessels were surrounded by a 'blue mantle' of osteoid tissu

Meniere's syndrome and otitis media.

We here present a clinical study of 37 patients with Meniere's syndrome. Meniere's syndrome can occur subsequent to and in some cases simultaneously with chronic otitis media. When otitis media which has occurred many years earlier in childhood becomes inactive, leading to sequelae of Meniere's later in life, full-blown Meniere's symptom-complex with vertigo tends to occur; whereas when active chronic otitis media accompanies Meniere's, cochlear Meniere's syndrome tends to predominate. Endolymphatic hydrops is described in pathological cases of labyrinthitis and in 11 human temporal bone cases

Moxalactam therapy. Its use in chronic suppurative otitis media and malignant external otitis.

Moxalactam disodium is a new broad-spectrum antibiotic structurally related to the cephalosporins. Eleven patients with chronic suppurative otitis media with mastoiditis and four patients with malignant external otitis were treated with moxalactam. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from external ear or mastoid in all patients. Twelve of 15 patients had undergone prior surgical procedures and 11 of 15 had failed recent antibiotic therapy. Three patients with malignant external otitis did not respond to parenteral carboxypenicillin and aminoglycoside therapy. Success rate for chronic suppurati

Spontaneous cortical slow-potential shifts and choice reaction time performance.

EEGs from Fz, Cz and Pz locations (reference--right mastoid) were obtained from 36 adults. For experimental trials the Fz slow potentials (SP) were determined for a pretask interval of: a 3 sec baseline, followed by a 2.5 sec SP shift, in either negative (3.5 microV) or positive (1.5 microV) direction, and maintenance at this level for another 2.5 sec. When this criterion was met the stimuli for a choice RT task were presented (potential-related event, PRE), which required a button-press response with the right or left hand for differing stimulus configurations. During subsequent control sessi

[Subacute and chronic mastoiditis in the elderly: report on 10 cases including 5 with a Bell's palsy complication (author's transl)].

Ten elderly patients with subacute or chronic mastoiditis, including 5 with a complication Bell's palsy, were treated. 1) mastoid infections in elderly patients can present the typical characteristics as seen in younger subjects, this being the case in 4 of the 10 cases. 2) The findings in the other 6 patients confirmed facts, that are known or suspected, relating to the sometimes extremely serious and rapidly progressive nature of the affection, due to almost total lack of defences of the organism in elderly patients, often also diabetic, where the causal germ was invariably pyocanic. 3) In 3

Chronic ear disease along the coasts of Labrador and Northern Newfoundland.

The high incidence of chronic ear disease among the three ethnic groups, Eskimo, Algonkian Indians, and Caucasians living under the same environmental conditions is studied. The role of socio-economic factors in the incidence and sequelae of ear disease in this population was similar to other studies among the native peoples of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The variation in the disease pattern in the different ethnic groups was shown to be related to the aeration of the middle ear cleft. The air cell system of the mastoid is determined by x-rays and/or surgical exploration, but the patency of
