Cholesteatoma: diagnosis, management and follow-up, and an interesting case report.

Cholesteatomas are benign tumors composed of skin-related substances. They can extensively infiltrate the ear and compromise surrounding structures, requiring surgical removal. Computed tomography can assist with surgical planning by illustrating the position and impact of the cholesteatoma. Recent advancements in magnetic resonance imaging have demonstrated enhanced visualization of cholesteatomas. Whereas additional surgical intervention was formerly necessary to identify cholesteatoma recurrence, magnetic resonance imaging can now often serve as an alternative. This paper reviews the curren

[Therapeutic effect of β-tricalcium phosphate in mastoid cavity obliterationunder endoscope].

Objective:To investigate the therapeutic effect of β-tricalcium phosphate in mastoid cavity obliteration for middle ear cholesteatoma under endoscope. Methods:Sixty patients with middle ear cholesteatoma admitted to our department from September 2021 to March 2022 were included in this study. The observation group(n=30) received β-tricalcium phosphate during mastoid cavity obliteration. The control group(n=30) received autologous tissue during mastoid cavity obliteration. Pure tone audiometry was performed before surgery and after surgery in both groups, and the air conduction thresholds of 50

In this paper, a case of middle ear cholesteatoma with sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis and retroauricular subperiosteal abscess was reported. The female patient was hospitalized with bilateral ear abscess for more than 20 days and fever with vomiting for 14 days. Anti-infection treatment after admission, emergency right mastoid radical resection and tympanoplasty were performed under general anesthesia. The patient recovered well after surgery, and there was no recurrence after in the follow-up for more than 2 years. The clinical manifestations, imaging features and prognosis of this disease wer

High-Throughput Sequencing Investigation of Bacterial Diversity in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and Middle Ear Cholesteatoma.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Chronic otitis media is a common middle ear disease in otolaryngology. Bacterial infection is considered as the cause of the disease, but relying on conventional bacterial cultures can be problematic for identifying specific pathogens. Current research suggests that bacteria in microbial communities can only be identified by rDNA sequencing of bacteria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized broad-range PCR amplification of 16S rRNA genes with clone analysis to compare bacterial diversity in lesions from 6 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and 10 patients

Improved assessment of middle ear recurrent/residual cholesteatomas using temporal subtraction CT.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of temporal subtraction CT (TSCT) of temporal bone CT for the detection of postoperative recurrent/residual cholesteatoma of the middle ear. METHODS: Thirty-two consecutive patients with surgically proven postoperative recurrent/residual cholesteatoma and 14 consecutive patients without recurrent/residual lesion matched the selection criteria and were retrospectively evaluated. TSCT imaging was generated with the use of serial postoperative CT. Two experienced radiologists and two residents evaluated the presence of bone ero

Endoscopic myringoplasty: comparison of double layer cartilage-perichondrium graft and single fascia grafting.

OBJECTIVE: To compare surgical results of endoscopic myringoplasty using double layer cartilage-perichondrium grafts versus single fascia grafts. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled. SETTING: University-affiliated teaching hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In total,134 patients who underwent endoscopic myringoplasty were included in this study. Patients in group A received a double layer tragal cartilage-perichondrium graft and those in group B received a temporal muscle fascia graft. The groups were compared with respect to the pre- and postoperative air-bone gap (ABG) and the

[Retroauricular teratoma with congenital microtia and ankylotia: a case report].

Teratoma is a germ cell tumor, which is rare behind the ear. We described a rare case of retroauricular teratoma accompanied with congenital malformation of external and middle ear and cholesteatoma of middle ear in a 13-years-old girl. Congenital microtia and ankylotia of right ear was found since childhood, suppuration occurred repeatedly behind the right ear 1 year ago. Temporal bone CT and MRI scan revealed congenital malformation of middle ear and cholesteatoma of middle ear. Cystic mass containing a tooth was found intraoperatively. The pathological results showed that it was benign cyst

OBJECTIVE: Differences in clinical features, especially facial nerve canal leision between cholesteatoma in external auditory meatus and middle ear were compaired. METHOD: A retrospective clinical analysis was made. Clinical data included 125 cases of middle ear cholesteatoma with facial nerve canal leision and 28 cases of cholesteatoma occurred in external auditory canal from 2003-01-2014-08 in our hospital. RESULT: Clinical course of cholesteatoma in external auditory canal was 4.97 ± 7.51 years, course of middle ear cholesteatoma was 16.60 ± 14.42 years (P < 0.01). 21 cases (75%) of exter

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the location, staging, clinical symptoms, imaging features, and surgical treatment of the congenital cholesteatoma of middle ear (CCME). METHOD: This was a retrospective review of 20 CCME cases. RESULT: Of 20 cases with CCME, 2 cases were classified as Postic stage I, 0 as stage II, 13 as stage III, 5 as stage IV. Conductive hearing loss was the most common clinical symptom. The mean preoperative PTA was 54.1 dB, and the mean ABG was 41.7 dB. One case underwent a modified mastoidectomy and a second-stage ossicular reconstruction; 2 cases experienced a radical mastoi

[Techniques end results of surgical treatment cholesteatoma of middle ear].

INTRODUCTION: Basic surgical techniques in the treatment of middle ear cholesteatoma include the intact-canal-wall and canal-wall-down tympanoplasty and combined method, i.e. the "mobile-bridge" tympanoplasty. The techniques including reconstruction of the posterior bone wall of the external auditory canal are combination of formerly mentioned methods. These tympanoplasty procedures involve a partial or complete removal of the posterior bone wall of the meatus. Subsequently, after the elimination of pathological process, the reconstruction of the middle ear is performed. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

INTRODUCTION: Facial palsy can be a consequence of untreated chronic suppurative otitis media. This disease can last for many years manifesting as partial deafness and ear effusion resulting in palsy after spreading of pathological process in the surrounding cranial structures. The patient with facial palsy cannot rise his forehead, nor close his eye on the involved side, while his cheek and lips just fall. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective research included patients operated for chronic suppurative otitis media with facial palsy during the last ten years. We have examined data on dura
