Vision Loss in an Infantryman With Complex Hearing Loss: Case Report and Review of Susac Syndrome.

Susac syndrome can resemble various disorders resulting in a delayed or missed diagnosis and subsequent delays in treatment. Here, we present how successful consideration of patient history, symptoms, and ancillary testing led to prompt diagnosis and treatment of Susac syndrome by ophthalmologists. A 27-year-old active duty infantryman presented with sudden vision loss in the right eye during strenuous exercise after experiencing similar symptoms in the left eye 5 months earlier. The patient's medical history was notable for mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, confounded by a hist

Acoustic Transmitted Decellularized Fish Bladder for Tympanic Membrane Regeneration.

Developing advanced tissue-engineered membranes with biocompatibility, suitable mechanical qualities, and anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory actions is important for tympanic membrane (TM) repair. Here, we present a novel acoustically transmitted decellularized fish swim bladder (DFB) loaded with mesenchymal stem cells (DFB@MSCs) for TM perforation (TMP) repair. The DFB scaffolds are obtained by removing the cellular components from the original FB, which retains the collagen composition that favors cell proliferation. Benefitting from their spatially porous structures and excellent mechanica

Monocyte-derived macrophage recruitment mediated by TRPV1 is required for eardrum wound healing.

The tympanic membrane (TM), or eardrum, is a thin, sensitive tissue critical for hearing by vibrating and transmitting sound waves to the inner ear. TM perforation and development of otitis media and conductive hearing loss are commonly seen in the clinic. In this study, we demonstrate the role of TRPV1 signaling mediated macrophage recruitment and angiogenesis in TM repair. By creating a wounded TM mouse model with a perforation in the anteroinferior region of the pars tensa - a region in humans often damaged in traumatic injury, we observed a massive accumulation of macrophages in the vicini

Cooperative GAN: Automated tympanic membrane anomaly detection using a Cooperative Observation Network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied to otolaryngology. However, existing supervised learning methods cannot easily predict data outside the learning domain. Moreover, collecting diverse medical data has become demanding owing to privacy concerns. Consequently, these limitations hinder the applications of AI in clinical settings. To address these issues, this study proposes a Cooperative Observation Network (CON), using an unsupervised anomaly detection approach. Anomaly detection is the process of identifying data patterns that deviate from the ma

Revealing the Effects of Tympanic Membrane Implant Mechanical Properties on High-Frequency Hearing Loss After Clinical Myringoplasty: A Finite Element Analysis.

Myringoplasty is most commonly used to treat tympanic membrane (TM) perforation. Clinical data have shown that unexplained high-frequency (above 3 kHz) hearing loss often occurs after myringoplasty. In this paper, a finite element (FE) model of the partial external and middle ear (ME) of the human ear, which considers the actual perforation and TM implants, is developed to reveal the mechanical mechanism of high-frequency hearing loss after implantation of temporalis fascia and cartilage commonly used in myringoplasty. The SFP displacement is proposed to evaluate the myringoplasty effect, whic

Intratympanic Membrane Cholesteatoma in a Toddler.

Intratympanic cholesteatoma (ITC) is a rare keratinous epithelial cyst of the tympanic membrane. A girl in her early childhood was referred to the otorhinolaryngology clinic following concerns about a pearly white mass in the pars tensa in the left ear. Enucleation of the lesion was performed under a general anaesthetic with a Rosen needle. A histological analysis confirmed cholesteatoma. A comprehensive assessment by an otolaryngologist is important in determining appropriate, timely surgical intervention and minimising complications such as tympanic membrane perforation and progression of ch
