INTRODUCTION: Risk factors for unsuccessful healing of a tympanic membrane perforation following myringoplasty lack consensus. Large cohort studies are missing.
METHODS: Data were collected for myringoplasties (with/without concomitant ossiculoplasty) performed the years 2014-2019 with a follow-up visit using the Swedish Quality Register for Ear Surgery (SwedEar). Risk factors for unsuccessful surgical outcome, defined as non-healed tympanic membrane at follow-up, were calculated using logistic regression.
RESULTS: The study population included 3622 cases and 12.8% had a non-healed tympanic

Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external auditory canal that may extend to the tympanic membrane. Although commonly caused by Aspergillus and Candida species, infections due to uncommon fungal pathogens may present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who presented to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) with intense pruritus of the right external auditory canal, associated with a whitish discharge and tympanic perforation on otoscopic examination. Mycological analysis of the ear discharge identified Candida lusitaniae. To our knowledg

OBJECTIVE: Chronic tympanic membrane perforations generally require surgical repair, most often via tympanoplasty. While effective, these procedures involve anesthesia, carry significant costs, and may not always be accessible. The objective of this review is to explore biomaterials and biological therapies that could promote tympanic membrane regeneration and potentially reduce the need for surgery.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Google Scholar between September 1958 and December 2025.
REVIEW METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic review of clinical studies about biomaterials or biological therapies

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a leading cause of acquired conductive hearing loss in children. When performing an adenoidectomy for OME, surgeons must decide whether to supplement the procedure with a simple myringotomy or a myringotomy with tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion. While TT offers extended middle ear ventilation, it carries a risk of long-term complications. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of these two approaches.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, CENTRAL, and Web of Science was

BACKGROUND: European cities are placing a larger emphasis on urban data consolidation and analysis for optimizing public transport in response to changing urban mobility dynamics. Despite the existing efforts, traffic data analysis often disregards vital situational context, including large-scale events, weather factors, traffic generation poles, social distancing norms, or traffic interdictions. Some of these sources of context data are still private, dispersed, or unavailable for the purpose of planning or managing urban mobility. Addressing the above observation, the Lisbon city Council has

This case report describes a 46 year old female with complaints of dizziness and decreased ability to complete activities of daily living although aboard a U.S. Navy ship. She was unable to walk unsupported and her ability to work at a computer was severely limited because of the severity of her symptoms. She had a long history of motion sickness, predominantly seasickness (mal de mer), Eustachian tube dysfunction, and bilateral tympanic membrane perforations. Finding minimal benefit from pharmacological interventions, she was evaluated and diagnosed with seasickness by a physical therapist. T

OBJECTIVE: Prior cross-sectional analysis suggests an association between conductive hearing loss (CHL) and depression. However, little is known about the potential impact of specific CHL pathologies on mood disorders. We investigate if there is an association between 3 potentially correctable causes of CHL (otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, and tympanic membrane perforation) and depressive disorders in a national cohort.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional epidemiologic study.
SETTING: National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program.
PATIENTS: Participants 18 years or older (n=363,302). Expo

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of tympanic membrane regeneration therapy (TMRT) for chronic otitis media (COM).
METHODS: Of 154 patients (166 ears) with COM and tympanic membrane perforation (TMP), 53 (54 ears) underwent conventional tympanoplasty (CTP), and 101 (112 ears) underwent TMRT. TMRT was performed using an endoscope to create a fresh wound around the TMP edge and remove most of the remaining TM. After high-pressure saline irrigation of the tympanic cavity and removal of the lesion, a basic fibroblast growth factor-infiltrated gelatin sponge was placed and covered with fibri

Tympanoplasty repairs tympanic membrane (TM) perforations using grafts. In pediatric patients, cartilage grafts are preferred over fascia due to superior mechanical properties that prevent complications from negative middle ear pressure, including graft failure, retraction, and cholesteatoma formation. However, autologous grafts cause donor-site morbidity and increased surgical time. To overcome these limitations, we engineered an allogeneic porcine meniscus decellularized (MEND) fibrocartilage graft with a unique microchannel structure created by selective elastin and vascular digestion to pr

In this study, we present an innovative approach in medicine, leveraging the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the diagnosis of tympanic membrane perforations. Due to its central role in sound transmission, the tympanic membrane is a key element in clinical assessment and therapeutic decision-making. Our research focuses on the automated detection of tympanic membrane perforations using advanced AI algorithms, capable of accurately identifying whether a perforation is marginal or not. This study evaluates the performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN) optimized by a geneti

Accurate diagnosis of eardrum abnormalities is pivotal for effectively managing various ear conditions. Otoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, provides detailed views of the ear canal and eardrum to identify pathologies such as otitis media, tympanic membrane perforations, and other abnormalities. Despite advancements, classifying otoscopy images remains challenging due to lighting variations, motion blur, and diverse abnormalities, exacerbated by limited labeled datasets and subjective assessments. A significant barrier to accurate diagnosis is the lack of an objective evaluation meth

BACKGROUND & AIM: Tympanic membrane perforation is a common cause of conductive hearing loss and otologic morbidities. The most common cause is trauma, which tends to heal spontaneously. Conversely, perforations caused by infections or middle ear pathology require surgical intervention, such as tympanoplasty. While cartilage tympanoplasty provides benefits of durability and resistance to retraction, concerns persist regarding graft rigidity and its adverse effects on hearing outcomes. This study was implemented to assess the anatomical and functional success of an innovative and novel form of
