Endoscopic Overlay Myringoplasty: A Feasible Endoscopic Variant With Potential for Improved Graft Stability.

Overlay myringoplasty is a well-established technique for repairing challenging tympanic membrane perforations, particularly anterior and subtotal defects. We report our experience with an endoscopic variant using cartilage grafts, which appears feasible and may offer favorable graft stability. This retrospective case series included five patients who underwent endoscopic cartilage overlay myringoplasty between February 2024 and February 2025. The grafts were placed laterally to the fibrous layer and medially to the tympanic membrane skin and canal skin flap. Anatomical and functional outcomes

Chronic suppurative otitis media and hearing loss among children in Eastern Greenland.

Greenland has a high prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), causing hearing loss (HL) in children. Understanding regional differences in prevalence is essential for public health service provision. This school-based cross-sectional study is the first to examine the prevalence of HL among children attending the only school in Tasiilaq, East Greenland. Video-otoscopy, tympanometry and pure-tone air and bone conduction audiometry were performed. In total 92 of 114 children aged 5-11 were included. 51 children (55%) had HL defined as pure-tone-average (PTA) >15 dB in the worst hear

Characteristics of sensorineural hearing loss in tubotympanic chronic otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a persistent middle ear infection. The tubotympanic type, which is the predominant form, mainly causes conductive hearing loss (CHL), but may result in sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). This study aims to investigate the frequency and audiological profile of SNHL in patients with tubotympanic CSOM based on a single-center patient population. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at a tertiary otolaryngology and audiology unit, from September 2024 to January 2025. Sixty patients with unilateral tubotympanic CSOM were

Antibiotics versus topical antiseptics for chronic suppurative otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media, is a chronic inflammation and often polymicrobial infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity. It is characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Antibiotics and antiseptics kill or inhibit the micro-organisms that may be responsible for the infection. Antibiotics can be applied topically or administered systemically via the oral or injection route. Antiseptics are always directly applie

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media (COM), is a chronic inflammation and often polymicrobial infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity, characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Topical antiseptics, a possible treatment for CSOM, inhibit the micro-organisms that may be responsible for the infection. Antiseptics can be used alone or in addition to other treatments for CSOM, such as antibiotics or ear cleaning (aural toi

Aural toilet (ear cleaning) for chronic suppurative otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media, is a chronic inflammation and often polymicrobial infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity, characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Aural toileting describes processes for manually cleaning the ear, including dry mopping (with cotton wool or tissue paper), suction clearance (typically under a microscope), or irrigation (using manual or automated syringing). Aural toileting can be

AIMS: To investigate whether localization of beta-catenin is helpful in differentiating primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma and colorectal adenocarcinoma metastatic to the ovary. Extra-ovarian cancers which metastasize to the ovaries, especially from colorectal adenocarcinoma, frequently mimic primary ovarian carcinomas, particularly endometrioid and mucinous types. Distinguishing primary ovarian carcinoma from metastatic colorectal carcinoma is important for both therapeutic and prognostic reasons. Even after thorough histological examination, metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas are still of

Bidirectional nuclear polarization through electric dipole spin resonance enabled by spin-orbit interaction in a single hole planar quantum dot device.

BACKGROUND: Non-hysteroscopic myomectomy is infrequently performed in a freestanding ambulatory setting, in part due to risks of intraoperative hemorrhage. There are also concerns about increased surgical risks for morbidly obese patients in this setting. The purpose of this study is to report the surgical outcomes of a series of laparoscopic-assisted myomectomy (LAM) cases at a freestanding ambulatory surgery center (ASC), including a comparative analysis of outcomes in morbidly obese patients (BMI > 40 kg/m2). METHODS: A retrospective comparative analysis was performed of 969 women, age 18

Symmetrically dotted tympanic membranes.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Color changes of the tympanic membranes without an inflammatory component or perforation are rarely described. They may result from hemorrhage after barotrauma or spontaneously. Other explanatory models include discoloration due to otomycosis. ABSTRACT: This is a case of a 61-year-old patient with an unexplained incidental of black dots located almost symmetrically on the antero-inferior quadrant of both tympanic membranes. This harmless anatomical rarity has not been published before. Underlying pathologies should be excluded in the case of discoloration of the tympanic

In Vitro Assessment of Wound-Healing Efficacy of Stabilized Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF-2) Solutions.

Chronic tympanic membrane perforations (TMP) pose a significant clinical challenge, but basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) shows promise for their treatment, despite its instability in aqueous solutions which hampers the sustained delivery crucial for the healing process. Addressing this, our research focused on the development of stabilized FGF-2 formulations, F5 and F6, incorporating dual, generally regarded as safe (GRAS) excipients to enhance stability and therapeutic efficacy. F5 combined FGF-2 (1600 ng/mL) with 0.05% w/v methylcellulose (MC) and 20 mM alanine, while F6 used FGF-2 wit

Myringoplasty - A Rewiev of 438 Cases.

The medical records of 438 patients who underwent myringoplasty followed up for a minimum of one year in the period of 1980 and 2015 were revised. Examination under otomicroscope was done of the ear to be operated. This was carried out with a speculum under the operating microscope to be reliably asses the tympanic membrane, site of perforation, to rule out any other pathology and assess the status of ossicular chain. All the patients submitted primary myringoplasty surgery were operated under postauricular, endaural and transcanal approach with overlay, underlay and inlay methods. In the stud

The A2ml1-Knockout mouse as an animal model for non-syndromic otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and infection of the middle ear, known as otitis media (OM), is a leading cause of hearing loss and the most frequently diagnosed disease in children worldwide. Traditionally, mouse models for OM rely on inducing acute infection through inoculation of the middle ear, e.g. with the human otopathogen non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi), and with very few genetic models with spontaneous or chronic OM. A2ML1 variants, including loss-of-function variants, were associated with susceptibility to OM in humans, but no animal model has been reported for A2ml1-related OM.

Experimental Study of Needle Insertion into Gerbil Tympanic Membrane.

The perforation characteristics and fracture-related mechanical properties of the tympanic membrane (TM) greatly affect surgical procedures like myringotomy and tympanostomy performed on the middle ear. We analyzed the most important features of the gerbil TM perforation using an experimental approach that was based on force measurement during a 2-cycle needle insertion/extraction process. Fracture energy, friction energy, strain energy, and hysteresis loss were taken into consideration for the analysis of the different stages of needle insertion and extraction. The results demonstrated that (
