Effect of Growth Factor-Loaded Acellular Dermal Matrix/MSCs on Regeneration of Chronic Tympanic Membrane Perforations in Rats.

The success rate of grafting using acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for chronic tympanic membrane was reported in previous studies to be lower than fascia or perichondrium. Combining mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and growth factor-loaded ADM for the regeneration of chronic TMP has not been reported so far. In this study, we hypothesized that combining growth factor-loaded ADM/MSCs could promote the recruitment of MSCs and assist in TMP regeneration. We evaluated the regeneration and compared the performance of four scaffolds in both in vitro and in vivo studies. MTT, qPCR, and immunoblotting were

Ocular and auditory abnormalities in patients with vitiligo: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is characterized by the destruction of functional melanocytes in the skin. This destruction can target melanocytes anywhere in the body, in turn affecting the function of the organs in which the affected melanocytes reside. Melanocytes in the skin, uveal tract and ear are similar in their physiology and morphology, and share a common embryological origin. AIM: To study the association of vitiligo with ocular and auditory abnormalities. METHODS: This case-control study was carried out on 40 patients with vitiligo and 20 healthy controls (HCs). All patients and HCs underwe

Innate Immunity in the Middle Ear Mucosa.

Otitis media (OM) encompasses a spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from the readily identifiable Acute OM (AOM), which is characterised by otalgia and fever, to chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) where impaired hearing due to middle ear effusion may be the only clinical symptom. Chronic suppurative OM (CSOM) presents as a more severe form of OM, involving perforation of the tympanic membrane. The pathogenesis of OM in these varied clinical presentations is unclear but activation of the innate inflammatory responses to viral and/or bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tra

Topical versus systemic antibiotics for chronic suppurative otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media (COM), is a chronic inflammation and often polymicrobial infection (involving more than one micro-organism) of the middle ear and mastoid cavity, characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Antibiotics are the most common treatment for CSOM, which act to kill or inhibit the growth of micro-organisms that may be responsible for the infection. When Crises Hit Home: How U.S. Higher Education Leaders Navigate Values During Uncertain Times.

Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, this study investigates how U.S. higher education leaders have centered their crisis management on values and guiding ethical principles. We conducted 55 in-depth interviews with leaders from 30 U.S. higher education institutions, with most leaders participating in two interviews. We found that crisis plans created prior to the COVID-19 pandemic were inadequate due to the long duration and highly uncertain nature of the crisis. Instead, higher education leaders applied guiding principles on the fly to support their decision-making. If colleges and uni

MRI detection of endolymphatic hydrops in Meniere's disease in 8 minutes using MIIRMR and a 20-channel coil after targeted gadolinium delivery.

BACKGROUND: Endolymphatic hydrops (EH) become visible in vertigo patients, particularly in those with Meniere's disease (MD), in vivo using gadolinium-enhanced MRI. However, the image quality is not satisfying after intravenous injection of gadolinium chelate (GdC), and occasional failure in GdC uptake has been noticed after traditional intratympanic injection. In the present report, targeted delivery of GdC and using a cost-effective MRI system to obtain high quality images of EH in only 8 min will be introduced. METHODS: 39 MD patients were recruited in the study. First, 0.1 ml of 20-fold d
