KTP laser therapy for refractory chronic myringitis: a case series and comparative outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare KTP (potassium titanyl phosphate) laser therapy and dextracin ear drops for treatment of chronic myringitis. METHODS: A case series involving 31 patients (18 laser group; 13 dextracin group). Primary outcomes included otorrhoea resolution, improvement in Chronic Ear Survey scores and endoscopic resolution. Secondary outcomes included hearing outcome and complications. Statistical analyses were performed using Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-rank and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: The laser group had a higher rate of otorrhoea resolution 66.67

Stepwise treatment of chronic myringitis under otoendoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic myringitis is a prevalent inflammatory disease of the external auditory canal, characterized by its tendency to persist and resist healing. Currently, there is no universally accepted and effective treatment protocol in clinical practice. This study aims to investigate a stepwise treatment approach for chronic myringitis under otoendoscopy. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 118 patients with chronic myringitis who were treated at the Otology Medical Center of the First People's Hospital of Foshan between March 2021 and September 2024. Vibrio alginolyticus Associated Chronic Myringitis Acquired in Mediterranean Waters of Turkey.

Vibrio alginolyticus was originally classified as biotype 2 of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Most clinical isolates are recovered from superficial wounds or the external ear infections. V. alginolyticus is acknowledged to be nearly nonpathogenic in humans. The reason for presence of V. alginolyticus's virulence is uncertain. We describe a chronic myringitis case in a 47-year-old female due to V. alginolyticus. According to her anamnesis, it was detected that she had sea bathing history in Mugla Coast in Turkey. Pure isolation of V. alginolyticus was obtained from external auditory canal's culture.

Microanatomy of the tympanic membrane in chronic myringitis obtained with optical coherence tomography.

A microscope-based optical coherence tomography (OCT) device was used to assess the microanatomy of the tympanic membrane in patients with chronic myringitis. A prospective study was designed for this purpose. OCT measurements of the tympanic membrane were done on 11 patients with myringitis with a microscope-based spectral domain OCT system. The in vivo findings were compared with those findings of a control group consisting of 36 patients with retraction pockets or atrophic tympanic membranes (n = 13), myringosclerosis (n = 12) and perforations (n = 11). In active chronic myringitis, the thi

Antibiotic resistance and otomycosis in the draining ear: culture results by diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to better define changes in the bacteriology of suppurative otitis in recent years and the role of cultures in the management of these patients. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review was performed. METHODS: Outpatient records from 170 patients collected over 3 years with information regarding the bacteria cultured, antibiotic resistance, and clinical diagnosis were analyzed. RESULTS: A large variety of organisms were seen, with Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium sp, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the most common. Forty percent of cultures showe

Intractable chronic myringitis treated with carbon dioxide laser microsurgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of carbon dioxide laser microsurgery in the treatment of intractable chronic myringitis (CM). DESIGN: Retrospective 10-year case note review. SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. PATIENTS: We reviewed retrospective case notes for 30 treated ears in 29 consecutive patients with CM (ie, loss of the tympanic membrane for longer than 1 month, refractory to conservative medical treatment) who underwent carbon dioxide laser microsurgery between 1995 and 2004, excluding patients who had undergone previous otologic surgery such as tympanoplasty. INTERVENTIONS: Ca

Otologic manifestations of relapsing polychondritis. Review of literature and report of nine cases.

OBJECTIVE: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is an episodic disease most likely of autoimmune etiology, characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilaginous structures. METHODS: Retrospective case study at two tertiary referral centers with presentation of nine patients with otologic involvement of RP, review of the spectrum of otologic disorders seen, and treatment. RESULTS: The clinical course of otologic manifestations of RP was highly variable and ranged from mild to moderate. In 6/9 patients there was an association with other autoimmune disorders. In addition to recurrent auricular cho

Chronic myringitis: prevalence, presentation, and natural history.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the clinical presentation and natural history of chronic myringitis (CM). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Chronic myringitis is defined as a loss of tympanic membrane epithelium for >1 month without disease within the tympanic cavity. Seven hundred fifty patient records were reviewed to determine the prevalence of CM in an academic otology practice. The records of 40 patients (45 ears) with CM seen between 1995 and 1999 inclusive were reviewed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The series was reviewe

Acute granulomatous myringitis.

This case report describes five cases of acute granulomatous myringitis treated during the nine-year period from 1987 to 1996. Otorrhoea and slight otalgia were the two major complaints. Findings included the appearance of a granulomatous bulge along the handle of the malleus or on the eardrum. No cases displayed eardrum perforation. No similarities were noted in patient age, sex or affected side. Treatment consisted of removal of the granuloma with a small cup forceps plus cauterization with 20 per cent trichloracetic acid. Two or three treatments resulted in complete healing, and average tim

The use of vascular flaps in middle ear surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate improved surgical outcomes from middle and external ear surgery using local vascular flaps to enhance tissue healing. STUDY DESIGN: The study design was a review of the design and clinical trials of three soft tissue flaps: the middle temporal flap (MTF), the middle temporal canal flap (MTCF), and the wing flap. All derive axial vascular supply from the middle temporal vessels. SETTING: The study was performed at a single surgeon's private otologic practice. PATIENTS: A total of 319 patients were treated from 1991-1996: MTF in 223, MTCF in 38, and win

Chronic myringitis and chronic suppurative otitis media.

Thirty-four chronic myringitis cases were examined by otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, skull X-rays, and bacteriologic study of otorrhea. Five atypical cases are presented in detail. Three of these five cases had a perforation of the tympanic membrane preceding the appearance of typical chronic myringitis. The remaining two cases showed a transient small tympanic membrane perforation during the long course of chronic myringitis. These cases suggest that chronic myringitis could occur in some chronic suppurative otitis media and that myringitis could cause tympanic membrane perfora
