Rigid normograde rhinoscopy-assisted traction-avulsion removal of small middle ear polyps from the auditory tube in five cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This study aims to describe a novel minimally invasive technique for the removal of small middle ear polyps from the auditory tube openings in cats. Five cats with clinical signs of otitis externa and/or otitis media, and/or upper respiratory tract inflammation were included. All cats underwent pharyngolaryngoscopy under anaesthesia, CT scan of the head, neck and thoracic cavity, video-otoscopic examination, retrograde nasopharyngoscopy and normograde rhinoscopy. The five cats described in this study were all found to have significant respiratory tract inflammation (rhinit

Accessing the Eustachian tube: Conventional nasal spray vs. exhalation delivery system and the impact of targeted endoscopic sinus surgery on topical distribution patterns.

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) may occur distinct from, or in conjunction with, chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS+ETD). Intranasal corticosteroid sprays are often prescribed for ETD, although ET distribution may be limited. To date, no anatomic studies compare nasopharynx (NP) distribution between conventional nasal sprays (NS) and exhalation delivery systems (EDS) after surgery. This study utilizes a cadaver model to examine topical NP delivery using EDS vs. NS before and after targeted endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: Sixteen sinonasal cavities were administered fluorescein

Eustachian Tube Teratoma: A Rare Entity.

INTRODUCTION: Teratomas, tumors derived from all 3 fetal germ cell layers, are rarely located in the head and neck region and extremely rare in the Eustachian tube area. CASE REPORT: The authors present the case of a 2 years old child with chronic ear discharge. Referral diagnosis was tumor or cyst of the temporal bone. Intraoperatively, a solid, hairy tumor located inside the Eustachain tube, with extension into the middle ear space was discovered and removed. Histology revealed a mature teratoma. Review of the literature showed reports of rare similar cases of Eustachian tube teratomas, dif

Analysis of Sinus Inflammation Associated With Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball Based on CT Imaging.

Background: Paranasal sinus fungal balls usually occur unilaterally, and the maxillary sinus is most commonly involved. However, other sinuses could be concomitantly inflammed, and this phenomenon is rarely discussed. Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the severity of maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB) and the occurrence of sinus inflammation in paranasal sinuses according to the image findings and analyze the potential correlations. Material and Methods: A total of 1226 cases of MSFB were divided into 2 groups according to ostiomeatal complex obstruction on computed tomography. The potential correl

Cholesterol Granuloma in the Maxillary Sinus: A Rare Presentation Associated With an Odontogenic Cyst.

Cholesterol granuloma is a histopathological finding characterized by a mass of connective tissue and granulation tissue. It is primarily observed in the middle ear, mastoid process, or paranasal sinuses, with rare occurrences in the dental odontogenic region. A dentigerous cyst encloses the crown of an unerupted tooth by expanding its follicle and attaches to the neck of the tooth. Here, we report a 63-year-old female who presented to the dental clinic complaining of an ill-fitted denture. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined radiolucent lesion in the upper left maxillary sinus with a

B-Cell Lymphoma of the Middle Ear Treated with Multidrug Chemotherapy in a Cat.

Primary lymphoma of the middle ear is rare in cats, and little information has been accumulated on the treatment and course. An 11-year-old spayed female mixed-breed cat was brought to our hospital with facial nerve paralysis, which had been stable using prednisolone for 3 months. She was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma of the right middle ear after otoscopic sampling, which showed evidence of the filling of bilateral tympanic bullae on computed tomography. Hepatic involvement was suspected, and she was treated with multidrug chemotherapy, resulting in clinical remission. On day 176, magnetic r

Incidental seromucinous hamartoma of the anterior nasal cavity presenting after episode of vestibular neuritis.

A woman in her 70s presented to primary care clinic complaining of acute onset dizziness for 1 day that was initially diagnosed as vestibular neuritis and treated with steroids. The next day, she presented to the emergency department with worsening symptoms. Imaging revealed no intracranial process; however, non-contrast CT imaging revealed a soft-tissue mass in the posterior ethmoid sinus. The vertigo completely resolved before an otolaryngologist surgically removed the nasal mass, which actually originated from the right cribriform plate and extended to the anterior middle turbinate head. A Rare Case of Sinonasal Seromucinous Hamartoma Developing from the Nasal Septum.

A 45-year-old man presented with a history of chronic left nasal congestion. Nasal endoscopy revealed a pedunculated polypoid mass with glandular epithelium surface on the posterior nasal septum. Computed tomography revealed a 25-mm mass-like growth in the left posterior nasal cavity attached to the nasal septum with a stalk. The patient underwent transnasal endoscopic surgery, and the tumor was removed under a block with safety margin. The final pathological diagnosis was sinonasal seromucinous hamartoma (SH). Sinonasal SH is a rare tumor with only 31 reported cases. Transnasal endoscopic sur

Finite element analysis of conductive hearing loss caused by fixation and detachment of ligament and tendon in the middle ear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The fixation of ligament and tendon of the middle ear often occurs after chronic otitis media surgery. However, there are relatively few studies on the effect of ligament and tendon on sound transmission in the human middle ear. Here, the finite element model and lumped parameter model are used to study the effect of ligament and tendon fixation and detachment on sound transmission in human ear. METHODS: In this paper, the finite element model including the external auditory canal, middle ear and simplified inner ear is used to calculate and compare the middle ear fr

Evaluation of the ear ossicles with photon-counting detector CT.

Recently, computed tomography with photon-counting detector (PCD-CT) has been developed to enable high-resolution imaging at a lower radiation dose. PCD-CT employs a photon-counting detector that can measure the number of incident X-ray photons and their energy. The newly released PCD-CT (NAEOTOM Alpha, Siemens Healthineers, Forchheim, Germany) has been in clinical use at our institution since December 2022. The PCD-CT offers several advantages over current state-of-the-art energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT). The PCD-CT does not require septa to create a detector channel, while EID-CT doe
