Middle Ear Primary Oncocytic Schneiderian Papilloma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic otitis media is a significant health problem, but middle ear and mastoid neoplasms, either benign or malignant, are extremely rare. CASE REPORT: Here is a report from a 51-year-old female who presented persistent otorrhea with an aural polyp. The patient was operated on with the probable diagnosis of cholesteatoma. During surgery, a fragile mass was discovered, and histopathologic examination reported the diagnosis of a primary oncocytic Schneiderian papilloma. Microscopically it has pseudostratified epithelium of columnar cell epithelium with eosinophilic granular cytop

Allergic rhinitis associated with nasal polyps and rhinosinusitis - histopathological and immunohistochemical study.

Currently, allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common allergic disease worldwide. AR is defined as immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated chronic inflammatory disease of the upper airways. It characterizes by symptoms like nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, nasal itching, and sneezing. The immune system and genetic susceptibility in the interaction with the environment lead to the development of AR. Many cytokines, chemokines and cells maintain allergic inflammation. Studies show that 10% to 30% of the adult population are affected, and that prevalence rates are increasing world widely. AR, nasal polyps (

Secondary Acquired Cholesteatoma in Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Patient.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a multi-faceted disease defined by the accumulation of dendritic cells in various organs with characteristics similar to the epidermal Langerhans cells and can affect any organ of the body. It is most commonly seen in young adults and children. Cholesteatoma is a congenital or acquired condition and is categorized into primary and secondary cholesteatomas. Only a few reported cases of primary or secondary cholesteatoma have been reported among patients treated for temporal bone LCH. We report a case of secondary acquired cholesteatoma in a six-year-old gi

Diode laser-assisted transcanal endoscopic removal of an aural polyp in the external auditory canal of a dog.

BACKGROUND: In humans, aural polyps comprise fibrovascular tissue covered by the respiratory epithelium. Aural polyps with ciliated epithelium are common in cats but are rarely reported in dogs. In a previous case, a mass filled the tympanic cavity alone, and it was surgically removed. OBJECTIVES: To report a case of a canine aural polyp with ciliated epithelium extending from the dorsal tympanic cavity to the external auditory canal with detailed otological features and to demonstrate the usefulness of the transcanal endoscopic procedure (TEP) with a diode laser as a less-invasive therapy.

Causes of Middle Ear Aural Polyps in Adult Patients from Kut and Diwaniyah Cities in Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Aural polyps consider as one of the most notable progressive lesions of middle ear. Chronic otitis media can result in development of aural polyps that ascends from the tympanic cavity outwards to the external auditory canal, leading to tympanic membrane perforation and hearing loss. Morbidity and mortality are usually rare, however, failure of diagnosis or prolonged negligence by the patient could increase the likelihood of cholesteatoma or malignant squamous carcinoma. AIM: To investigate the causes of middle ear aural polyps in adult patients selected from Kut and Diwaniyah cit

Myringosclerosis as a predictor of the requirement for a permanent pacemaker in patients with drug-related atrioventricular block.

AIMS: Drug-related atrioventricular block (DR-AVB) may develop in patients with underlying latent degenerative conduction disorders, especially with antiarrhythmics and antihypertensives. Although, according to the current guidelines, reversal is achieved with cessation of the inducing agent, this is not the case for nearly half of the patients. The pathophysiological processes of DR-AVB and myringosclerosis include systemic inflammation and degeneration. This study investigated the role of myringosclerosis in predicting irreversible high-grade DR-AVB despite drug cessation. METHODS: This obs

Evaluation of aortic stiffness by echocardiography in tympanosclerosis patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tympanosclerosis (TS) is a scarring process that may occur during otitis media. Aortic stiffness (AS) is a significant predictor for the development of heart diseases due to its close relationship with atherosclerosis. Similar pathophysiological processes based on inflammation may explain both TS and AS formation. This study aimed to determine echocardiographically whether aortic elasticity is impaired in TS-detected patients and to correlate blood inflammatory parameters with TS and aortic elasticity. METHODS: Ninety-eight participants diagnosed with chronic otitis media

CoCl2 -simulated hypoxia potentiates the osteogenic differentiation of fibroblasts derived from tympanosclerosis by upregulating the expression of BMP-2.

Tympanosclerosis (TS) is a result of long-standing middle ear inflammation characterized by fibroblasts ossification. Fibrosis is the last revertible stage in the progress of middle ear inflammation to TS. It was hypothesized that chronic hypoxia could be modulating fibrosis, which in turn additionally further aggravated hypoxia via decreasing oxygen diffusion. However, the effects of hypoxia on osteoinductive activity of fibroblasts have not been explored. Herein, we purposed to explore the role of hypoxia in osteogenic differentiation of fibroblasts derived from TS. The expression of bone mo

Clinical Significance of Körner's Septum in Relation to Occurrence of Squamous Chronic Otitis Media.

The Körner's septum (KS), persistent petrosquamosal lamina, is a bony lamina (developmental remnant) that extends from the articular fossa to the mastoid apex, above the middle ear, and runs inferiorly and laterally to the facial nerve canal. The petrous and squamous bones meet at this septum. The anatomical structure of KS, which most frequently occurs at the level of the head of the malleus and/or the anterior semicircular canal, is described in depth in this work. The embryological elements of the temporal bone development that result in the formation of KS are taken into consideration. Cli

Intractable otitis media - Pathogenesis and treatment of Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) and otitis media with Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) -associated vasculitis (OMAAV).

Intractable otitis media is resistant to antimicrobial therapy, tympanostomy ventilation tube insertion, and surgery. In children, intractable acute otitis media, pathological tympanic membrane due to prolonged otitis media with effusion (OME), tympanic membrane atelectasis, and adhesive otitis media are common. Contrarily, in adults, otitis media caused by drug-resistant pathogens, tuberculous otitis media, cholesterol granuloma, malignant otitis externa (skull base osteomyelitis), eosinophilic otitis media (EOM), and otitis media with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vas

Incorporating hearing screening to an otolaryngology surgical mission in the rural Dominican Republic.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries. Children with undiagnosed hearing loss may have difficulty with learning, language development, and behavior. The aim of this study was to understand the extent of hearing loss and common otologic disorders among school-age children in the rural western region of the Dominican Republic and to chronical the early stages of a limited-resource, locally-sustained hearing screening program in tandem with a bi-annual surgical mission. METHODS: Hearing screenings were performed for 528 school-age children (1056 e
