Mesna in Otologic Surgery: Efficacy and Safety-A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Mesna (Sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate) is widely used as a mucolytic agent and uroprotective agent. Recently, its disulfide bond-breaking property has been applied in otologic surgery to facilitate safer dissection of cholesteatoma and other adhesions. This review evaluates the effectiveness and toxicity of Mesna in its various uses of otologic surgeries. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive literature search was conducted with the aid of a senior medical librarian across eight databases conducted from inception until December 28, 2024: Google Scholar, Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CIN

Predictors of anatomical and functional success in pediatric type I tympanoplasty.

AIMS: Identification of predictors of anatomical and functional success in pediatric type I tympanoplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this case control study, we reviewed the medical records of children undergoing type I tympanoplasty between January 2012 and December 2022 in our hospital. Anatomical success was evaluated at 6 (T1), 12 (T2) months and at the end of follow up (T3). Functional success was defined as a mean postoperative ABG<10dB in ears with sustained tympanic membrane integrity. RESULTS: A total of 79 ears (67 patients) were included. The median age of our sample was 12 years (

Analysis of Long-Term and Short-Term Efficacy of Different Types of Tympanosclerosis Surgery Under Total Otoendoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the surgical effect for patients with different types of tympanosclerosis under total otoendoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 86 patients who were diagnosed with tympanosclerosis and underwent total endoscopic ear surgery. According to the Wielinga classification, the patients were categorized into type II group (n = 34) and type IV group (n = 52). Hearing outcomes were recorded and analyzed at the preoperative, short-term postoperative (≤6 months), and long-term postoperative (≥1 year) periods. RESULTS: Signif

Adenoidectomy with tympanostomy or with myringotomy alone: A systematic review of pediatric randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a leading cause of acquired conductive hearing loss in children. When performing an adenoidectomy for OME, surgeons must decide whether to supplement the procedure with a simple myringotomy or a myringotomy with tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion. While TT offers extended middle ear ventilation, it carries a risk of long-term complications. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of these two approaches. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, CENTRAL, and Web of Science was

StyleGAN-based synthetic image augmentation for multi-class otoscopy image classification.

Accurate diagnosis of eardrum abnormalities is pivotal for effectively managing various ear conditions. Otoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, provides detailed views of the ear canal and eardrum to identify pathologies such as otitis media, tympanic membrane perforations, and other abnormalities. Despite advancements, classifying otoscopy images remains challenging due to lighting variations, motion blur, and diverse abnormalities, exacerbated by limited labeled datasets and subjective assessments. A significant barrier to accurate diagnosis is the lack of an objective evaluation meth

Beyond the Tradition in Tympanoplasty: A Retrospective Cohort Study of a New Modified Palisade Tympanoplasty Technique.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Tympanic membrane perforation is a common cause of conductive hearing loss and otologic morbidities. The most common cause is trauma, which tends to heal spontaneously. Conversely, perforations caused by infections or middle ear pathology require surgical intervention, such as tympanoplasty. While cartilage tympanoplasty provides benefits of durability and resistance to retraction, concerns persist regarding graft rigidity and its adverse effects on hearing outcomes. This study was implemented to assess the anatomical and functional success of an innovative and novel form of

Long-term performance evaluation and seasonal field calibration of a low-cost particulate matter sensor.

UNLABELLED: Low-cost air quality sensors (LCS) provide high-resolution monitoring with affordability and real-time data but require performance evaluation and calibration due to probable lower accuracy compared to reference instruments and sensitivity to meteorological factors such as air relative humidity and temperature. Although most studies on low-cost sensors have been conducted in Europe and America, we did not find any study in regions like Iran, where air pollution levels and meteorological conditions differ significantly. In this study, performance evaluation and calibration of a low-

PD98059 inhibit the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts in the formation of tympanosclerosis via ERK1/2-MAPK signaling pathway.

Tympanosclerosis (TS) has become a common pathological condition of the middle ear, but the underlying mechanism of it is still ambiguous. It was found that osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (OPG/RANKL) axis played an important role in the development of TS and was regulated by the extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2-mitogen activated protein kinase (ERK1/2-MAPK) pathway. However, whether ERK1/2-MAPK pathway mediates the occurrence of TS by regulating OPG/RANKL axis has not been reported. In this study, MAPK and calcium pathway were found significantly a

Bilateral Hearing Loss in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: A Study of Conductive and Sensorineural Mechanisms from Pediatric and Adult Cases.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the respiratory and auditory systems. This study aims to assess the prevalence, type, and severity of bilateral hearing loss (HL) in PCD and Kartagener syndrome (KS) patients, examining age-related differences and chronic impacts of otologic pathologies. METHODS: A total of 19 patients (38 ears), including 6 children and 13 adults, were evaluated from June to September 2021. Comprehensive clinical examinations included otoscopy, tympanometry, and pure tone audiometry (PTA) for air and bone conduction. Tympano

The role of matrix metalloproteinase expression levels in the pathogenesis of tympanosclerosis.

PURPOSE: Tympanosclerosis is a disease characterized by the accumulation of hyaline calcareous deposits in the tympanic membrane, tympanic cavity, ossicular chain, ligaments, and rarely, in the mastoid. Matrix metalloproteinases, which are involved in physiological and pathologic processes, are also likely to play a role in tympanosclerosis. In our study, we aimed to investigate the presence of MMP 2 and 9 in patients with chronic otitis media with tympanosclerosis and its possible effect on tympanosclerosis severity and prognosis. METHODS: In our study, 45 patients with myringosclerosis or m

Prognostic factors in myringoplasty: a single institution retrospective chart review.

BACKGROUND: Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is the result of recurrent or chronic otitis media, iatrogenic or traumatic events. It may sometimes require a surgical repair, known as myringoplasty, with the purpose of rebuilding a barrier between the external and middle ear, and restoring a good hearing level. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify the prognostic factors that may affect the outcomes of myringoplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out by including all patients who had undergone myringoplasty for TMP in our Institution in the period
