BACKGROUND: Tympanosclerosis is a pathological process involving the middle ear. The hallmark of this disease is the formation of calcium deposits. In the submucosal layer, as well as in the right layer of the tympanic membrane, the calcium deposits result in a significant increase in the activity of fibroblasts and deposition of collagen fibers.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to examine the expression level of genes encoding collagen type I, II, III and IV (COL1A1, COL2A1, COL3A1, COL4A1) and osteopontin (SPP1) in the tympanic membrane of patients with tympanosclerosis.

The advent of the endoscope has facilitated otological surgery in recent years. Advances in optical technology have led to the development of high definition visualisation, such as 4K magnification. Narrow band imaging (NBI) has been shown to improve visualisation of tissue based on varying degrees of vascularity. This is a feasibility study, the first of its kind, aiming to investigate the appearances of middle ear anatomy and pathology (tympanic membrane, tympanosclerosis, cholesteatoma, granulation, endolymphatic sac hydrops, otosclerosis) under the NBI filter, using a high definition 4K en

Ossicular fixation through otosclerosis, chronic otitis media and other pathologies, especially tympanosclerosis, are treated by surgery if hearing aids fail as an alternative. However, the best hearing outcome is often based on knowledge of the degree and location of the fixation. Objective methods to quantify the degree and position of the fixation are largely lacking. Laser vibrometry is a known method to detect ossicular fixation but clinical applicability remains limited. A new method, minimally invasive laser vibrometry (MIVIB), is presented to quantify ossicle mobility using laser vibro

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of chronic ear disease in HIV+, highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART)-treated children and compare this to the prevalence in healthy children of similar age living in a similar setting.
INTRODUCTION: From previous clinical work in Ethiopia, we suspected that chronic middle ear disease was common both in the general pediatric population and especially among children with HIV/AIDS. Few studies have examined the prevalence of chronic ear disease in HIV + children, particularly in those treated with HAART.
METHODS: Full examination of the head and

Objective:To investigate the bone conduction (BC) in tympanosclerosis patients and its changes after surgery for tympanosclerosis, as well as its possible causes.Method:Retrospectively analyzed 30 cases of tympanosclerosis patients.Result:Before surgery, the average BC of the operated ear was (21.06±8.88) dBHL, the average BC of the healthy side was (16.78±8.97) dBHL, the difference had a statistical significance (t= 3.072, P< 0.01). The BC threshold, air conduction (AC) and ABG were significantly lower after operation. Preoperative BC at 2 000 Hz was the highest threshold (25.17±10.95) dBHL,

HYPOTHESIS: Nonotosclerotic stapes fixation does not represent a significant cause of stapes ankylosis in patients undergoing stapedectomy; the vast majority have otosclerosis.
BACKGROUND: Nonotosclerotic stapes fixation has been proposed as the diagnosis in 30 to 40% of patients undergoing stapedectomy (after excluding rare congenital, systemic, and syndromic causes of stapes fixation and tympanosclerosis). This finding was based on the histopathologic evaluation of total stapedectomy surgical specimens. Since these specimens do not include the surrounding otic capsule, the histopathologic e

INTRODUCTION: The ethiopathogenesis of tympanosclerosis has not been completely under- stood yet. Recent studies have shown that free oxygen radicals are important in the formation of tympanosclerosis. Melatonin and Vitamin C are known to be a powerful antioxidant, interacts directly with Reactive Oxygen Species and controls free radical-mediated tissue damage.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the possible preventative effects of melatonin and Vitamin C on tympanosclerosis in rats by using histopathology and determination of total antioxidant status total antioxidant status.

Introduction. Tympanosclerosis is a commonly encountered entity within ENT clinics and primary care settings. Recognizing ear pathology is essential for correct management. Oftentimes the diagnosis is clear; however in certain cases further workup to rule out other more insidious disease processes is warranted. Case Report. We present a case of tympanosclerosis which presented as an ear mass without classic appearance of tympanosclerosis. Through imaging and biopsy the diagnosis of tympanosclerosis was made. The patient was treated surgically with good outcome. Discussion. Various ear patholog

Neuroglialchoristoma is a rare cerebral heterotopia typically involving extracranial midline structures of the head and neck, including the nose, nasopharynx and oral cavity. It rarely involves non-midline structures, such as the middle ear, mastoid and orbit. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with right-sided hearing loss and aural fullness who was diagnosed with neuroglialchoristoma of the middle ear and mastoid. To our knowledge, this is the first report on neuroglialchoristomawith massive tympanosclerosis. The presence of combination supported the inhalation theory of neuroglialcho

Otitis media (OM), inflammation of the middle ear, is a common cause of hearing loss in children and in patients with many different syndromic diseases. Studies of the human population and mouse models have revealed that OM is a multifactorial disease with many environmental and genetic contributing factors. Here, we report on otitis media-related hearing loss in asj (ages with stiffened joints) mutant mice, which bear a point mutation in the Enpp1 gene. Auditory-evoked brainstem response (ABR) measurements revealed that around 90% of the mutant mice (Enpp1asj/asj) tested had moderate to sever

This study has aimed to determine the anatomical site of labyrinthine fistula in patients of chronic suppurative otitis media at our centre. Labyrinthine fistulae (LF) are caused by abnormal communications between the inner ear and surrounding structures resulting in perilymph leakage and hearing loss. Labyrinthine fistula represents as erosive loss of the enchondral bone overlying the semicircular canals without loss of perilymph. The manifestations of fistula like vertigo, hearing loss vary in severity and complexity, commonly ranging from very mild to incapacitating. Cholesteatoma induced f

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the inhibitory effects of clarithromycin on in vitro tympanosclerosis.
METHOD: Twenty-eight rats were divided into three groups: a clarithromycin group, a non-clarithromycin group and a negative control group. Those in the first two groups were injected with Streptococcus pneumoniae following a myringotomy, and tympanosclerosis was experimentally induced. Oral clarithromycin therapy was administered in the clarithromycin group. The other groups received no medical treatment.
RESULTS: All eardrums in the clarithromycin and non-clarithromycin groups developed myringos

BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease is an incapacitating disease in which recurrent attacks of vertigo are accompanied by hearing loss, tinnitus and/or aural fullness, all of which are discontinuous and variable in intensity. A number of different therapies have been identified for patients with this disease, ranging from dietary measures (e.g. a low-salt diet) and medication (e.g. betahistine (Serc®), diuretics) to extensive surgery (e.g. endolymphatic sac surgery). The Meniett® low-pressure pulse generator (Medtronic ENT, 1999) is a device that is designed to generate a computer-controlled sequenc
