Posterior Fossa Meningioma with Endolymphatic Sac Compression: Resolution of Dizziness after Surgery.

Dizziness is a prevalent clinical complaint, and determining the underlying etiology can be challenging. Posterior fossa masses have been observed to cause vertigo, with presentations very similar to Meniere's disease. In this report, we describe a case of a patient who presented with recurrent episodes of Meniere's-like vertigo in the setting of a posterior fossa meningioma, who underwent surgical resection of the tumor with significant improvement postoperatively. We postulate that these symptoms were caused by secondary endolymphatic hydrops and were able to demonstrate improvement in high-

Proteomic Signatures of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in the Mouse Cochlea.

Hearing loss affects over 1.5 billion people worldwide and has substantial social, educational, and economic consequences. Although genetic studies have identified numerous hearing-loss-associated genes, the molecular changes accompanying noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remain incompletely understood. We characterized the adult mouse cochlear proteome following damaging noise exposure using nano-LC-MS/MS and an integrative bioinformatics workflow. Comparative profiling of normal-hearing and NIHL cochleae identified 1742 proteins and an 80-protein NIHL-associated signature comprising 49 quant

Challenge of identifying a case of chronic invasive rhinosinusitis due to Rasamsonia aegroticola.

Fungal rhinosinusitis are frequently described in humans and its prevalence appears to be increasing. They mainly involve species of the genus Aspergillus. To date, conventional mycological diagnosis remains challenging, as only 30% and 50% of cultures are positive in cases of fungal balls and invasive rhinosinusitis respectively. Over the past decade, human infections due to the Rasamsonia argillacea species complex are increasingly frequent and mainly concern patients with cystic fibrosis or chronic granulomatous disease. We report here the first case of pseudotumoral R. aegroticola sinusiti

Differentiating vestibular migraine from Meniere's disease: an analysis of clinical features, videonystagmography, and caloric testing.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular migraine (VM) and Meniere's disease (MD) are episodic vertigo disorders with overlapping symptoms, often leading to misdiagnosis. This study aimed to identify a cost-effective diagnostic method to distinguish VM and MD. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 108 VM patients and 65 MD patients were enrolled. Clinical symptoms, interictal videonystagmography (VNG) findings, and caloric test results were analyzed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The VM group had a significantly higher proportion of females (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed i

Differentiating hidden meniere's disease from typical sudden sensorineural hearing loss: clinical significance of acute low-tone hearing loss.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate the clinical heterogeneity of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) by analyzing audiometric profiles over a 12-year period. Specifically, the study sought to identify a subgroup with acute low-tone hearing loss (ALHL) as a potential manifestation of hidden Meniere's disease (MD) and to differentiate its pathophysiological characteristics from typical SSNHL. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 620 patients treated for SSNHL at a tertiary referral center between 2004 and 2016. Patients were stratified into an ALHL group (n = 80), suspecte

Origin and evolution of colorectal mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNEN).

Colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is a rare and aggressive cancer and in a subset of patients associated with an adenocarcinoma (AC) component. When both components exceed 30% of the tumour, it is classified as mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN), although there is an ongoing debate about whether any presence of two distinct components should be sufficient for a MiNEN diagnosis. This study aimed to investigate the origin and subsequent genetic changes of these two components. Ten colorectal cases suitable for sampling of an AC and a poorly differentiated NEC compon

Single-Stage Surgical Treatment of Concurrent Meniere's Disease and Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence: A Case Report.

A 34-year-old woman with concurrent Meniere's disease (MD) and superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) presented with third-window-mediated drop attacks and episodic vertigo refractory to conservative medical management. The coexistence of these conditions and the pattern of presentation suggested overlapping inner-ear pathophysiology in which abnormal third-window mechanics potentiated MD symptoms. The patient underwent a single-stage transmastoid superior semicircular canal plugging and endolymphatic sac decompression to address both aberrant labyrinthine pressure transmission and impa

Selective Otolithic and Semicircular Canal Dysfunction: Insights from VEMP and vHIT.

Background/Objectives: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and the video head impulse test (vHIT) enable receptor-specific assessment of otolithic organs and semicircular canals. Their increasing use has revealed selective or apparently isolated vestibular abnormalities, although the clinical significance of these findings remains uncertain. This mini-review examines selective otolithic and semicircular canal dysfunction, with emphasis on diagnostic interpretation, methodological limitations, and future research needs. Methods: A structured narrative review of PubMed/MEDLINE and Scop

Polish Brachytherapy Society clinical recommendations and expert consensus on radical high-dose-rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: High-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) is an established and highly effective modality for the radical treatment of localized prostate cancer. Despite its widespread use in Poland, relevant aspects of patient selection, treatment qualification, dose and fractionation, integration with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), and target and organ-at-risk definition vary between centers. The aim of this document was to develop national recommendations and expert consensus statements to standardize the use of radical HDR-BT for prostate cancer. Distinguishing Meniere's disease from vestibular migraine: A comprehensive review of symptoms and diagnostic insights.

Meniere's disease and vestibular migraine are common episodic vestibular syndromes whose overlapping vertigo, auditory, and migraine-associated features can complicate differential diagnosis. In this narrative review, we compared the diagnostic criteria, symptom patterns, pathophysiology, and complementary test findings of these syndromes. Vestibular migraine is diagnosed clinically based on recurrent vestibular symptoms, migraine history, temporal association with migraine features, and exclusion of alternative causes; audiological and vestibular evaluations are not required. In contrast, dia

[Non-ablative surgical therapies for peripheral vertigo].

Peripheral vestibular vertigo requires surgical management in 10 to 20 % of patients, who present persistent symptoms despite conservative treatment. The main indications include Ménière's disease, superior semicircular canal dehiscence, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and perilymphatic fistulas. Non-ablative interventions aim to control vertigo while preserving inner ear function. They include endolymphatic sac surgery, semicircular canal occlusion, and perilymphatic fistula repair.

Cell-inspired dual-tandem catalytic nanoreactors drive targeted hearing protection.

Sensorineural hearing loss is driven by disruption of cochlear homeostasis, where dysregulated redox, ionic, and metabolic factors lead to hair cell degeneration and synaptic injury. Current strategies lack the capacity to restore the enzymatic clearance of reactive oxygen species or penetrate the blood-labyrinth barrier. Here, we report a cell-inspired dual-tandem catalytic nanoreactor (HSC@Se) integrating GPx-mimetic diselenide with superoxide dismutase and catalase to reconstruct the detoxification cascade. We show that the albumin scaffold stabilizes the nanoarchitecture and enables active

Disease-Specific Patterns of Multidimensional Video Head Impulse Test Parameters in Peripheral Vestibular Disorders.

Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) multidimensional parameters-namely vestibulo‑ocular reflex (VOR) gain, gain asymmetry (GA), and compensatory saccades (CS)-are core indicators for assessing peripheral vestibular dysfunction. The combined use of vHIT and caloric testing facilitates differential diagnosis of various vertigo syndromes. In this retrospective study, 310 adult patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders were enrolled, comprising 170 cases of Ménière's disease (MD), 110 cases of sudden sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by vertigo (SSHL‑V), and 30 cases of vestibular n

Topography of the middle cochlear turn relative to the oval window and facial canal: implications for middle-turn cochleostomy.

PURPOSE: Labyrinthitis ossificans poses a significant challenge to cochlear implant electrode insertion. Middle-turn cochleostomy with anterograde/retrograde manner or double-array electrode insertion is a viable option, in such cases. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the topography of the middle cochlear turn relative to the fenestra vestibuli (ovalis) or oval window (OW) and facial canal (FC) as pertaining to middle turn cochleostomy. METHODS: Forty-two formalin fixed cadaveric temporal bones were dissected. The distance between OW and cochlea at 360°, minimum distance betw

Caloric canal paresis thresholds in relation to vHIT-defined acute unilateral vestibular dysfunction: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Caloric testing and the video head impulse test (vHIT) assess vestibular function at different frequency ranges and provide complementary information in patients with acute vertigo. Although a canal paresis (CP) threshold of 25% is commonly used to define caloric abnormality, interpreting CP values in relation to vHIT-defined unilateral high-frequency vestibular dysfunction remains clinically challenging. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated how conventional and alternative caloric CP thresholds align with vHIT-defined acute unilateral vestibular dysfunction and sought an interpretive CP thres
