Conservative Otosclerosis Treatment With Sodium Fluoride and Other Modern Formulations: A Systematic Review.

Otosclerosis, also known as otospongiosis, is a primary osteodystrophy of the otic capsule of the inner ear and one of the leading causes of deafness in adults. The rationale for medical therapy for otospongiosis is to slow down and eventually stop the phase of bone resorption. Conservative treatments include sodium fluoride (NaF), bisphosphonates, and other modern medicines. A systematic review of the existing and published articles and books until April 2021 has been conducted in Medscape, Google Scholar, PubMed, and other databases using appropriate terms. According to the results of the re

In Silico Localization of Perilymph Proteins Enriched in Meńier̀e Disease Using Mammalian Cochlear Single-cell Transcriptomics.

HYPOTHESIS: Proteins enriched in the perilymph proteome of Meńier̀e disease (MD) patients may identify affected cell types. Utilizing single-cell transcriptome datasets from the mammalian cochlea, we hypothesize that these enriched perilymph proteins can be localized to specific cochlear cell types. BACKGROUND: The limited understanding of human inner ear pathologies and their associated biomolecular variations hinder efforts to develop disease-specific diagnostics and therapeutics. Perilymph sampling and analysis is now enabling further characterization of the cochlear microenvironment. Rece

Hearing Performance in Cochlear Implant Users Who Have Facial Nerve Stimulation.

Introduction  Facial nerve stimulation (FNS) is a complication in cochlear implant (CI) when the electrical current escapes from the cochlea to the nearby facial nerve. Different management to reduce its effects are available, although changes might result in a less-than-ideal fitting for the CI user, eventually reducing speech perception. Objective  To verify the etiologies that cause FNS, to identify strategies in managing FNS, and to evaluate speech recognition in patients who present FNS. Methods  Retrospective study approved by the Ethical Board of the Institution. From the files of a CI

The Curious Rise and Incomplete Fall of "Paracusis Willisii".

In 1672, Dr. Thomas Willis, a founder of the Royal Society and accomplished anatomist, described a peculiar phenomenon he had heard about "from a Credible Person" wherein two people with hearing loss appreciated some recovery of hearing when in the presence of increased background noise. Over time, this clinical entity came to bear his name, and Paracusis of Willis (or Paracusis Willisii) became a subject of both clinical interest as well as contention. In the early 1900s, a burgeoning appreciation for the diseases of the middle and inner ear heralded a boom in the study of paracuses, with man

Automatic Prediction of Conductive Hearing Loss Using Video Pneumatic Otoscopy and Deep Learning Algorithm.

OBJECTIVES: Diseases of the middle ear can interfere with normal sound transmission, which results in conductive hearing loss. Since video pneumatic otoscopy (VPO) findings reveal not only the presence of middle ear effusions but also dynamic movements of the tympanic membrane and part of the ossicles, analyzing VPO images was expected to be useful in predicting the presence of middle ear transmission problems. Using a convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep neural network implementing computer vision, this preliminary study aimed to create a deep learning model that detects the presence of

Mutation of foxl1 Results in Reduced Cartilage Markers in a Zebrafish Model of Otosclerosis.

Bone diseases such as otosclerosis (conductive hearing loss) and osteoporosis (low bone mineral density) can result from the abnormal expression of genes that regulate cartilage and bone development. The forkhead box transcription factor FOXL1 has been identified as the causative gene in a family with autosomal dominant otosclerosis and has been reported as a candidate gene in GWAS meta-analyses for osteoporosis. This potentially indicates a novel role for foxl1 in chondrogenesis, osteogenesis, and bone remodelling. We created a foxl1 mutant zebrafish strain as a model for otosclerosis and ost
