Measurement of Wideband Absorbance as a Test for Otosclerosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of wideband energy absorbance in diagnosing otosclerosis by comparing the differences in acoustic absorbance between otosclerotic and normal ears. Exactly 90 surgically confirmed otosclerotic ears were included in the test group. The control group consisted of 126 matched normal-hearing subjects. The Titan hearing test platform (Interacoustics) was used for absorbance and acoustic immittance tests. Energy absorbance, measured at tympanometric peak pressure, was analyzed in the range 226-8000 Hz. Differences between normal and otosc

Otosclerosis and Measles: Do Measles Have a Role in Otosclerosis? A Review Article.

Otosclerosis is a common cause of conductive hearing loss which is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder related to abnormal bone remodeling of the human otic capsule that has complex etiopathogenesis attributed to genetics, autoimmunity, viral infection, inflammation, hormonal factor, environmental factor, and disturbed bone metabolism. It has a prevalence of 0.3%-0.4% in Caucasians, which makes up 5-9% of all hearing loss and 18-22% of all conductive hearing loss. This review article aims to study the postulated role of sustained measles virus infection in the etiopathogenesis of otosclerosis,

[Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum].

Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum. Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum is defined by a hearing loss in in relation to a disturbance in the transmission of sound waves from a normal eardrum to an intact cochlear nerve. The interest in diagnosing these kinds of hearing loss is due on the one hand to their high frequency, on the other hand to the socio-professional repercussions that they can induce and finally to the fact that a large part of them are accessible to surgical treatment or, hearing aid. The CT-scan contributes to the diagnostic orientation and the preoperative

Why did we encounter gusher in a stapes surgery case? Was it enlarged medial aperture of the cochlear aqueduct?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Preoperative prediction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gusher is important for stapes surgery. According to the current opinion settled among otologists and radiologists, the issues of whether enlarged cochlear aqueduct might be a cause of CSF gusher in stapes surgery and which segment of the aqueduct should be taken into account to diagnose enlarged cochlear aqueduct in computerized tomography (CT) are controversial. The case we encountered led us to hypothesize that enlarged cochlear aqueduct might cause CSF gusher in stapes surgery and that shape and diameter of medial

Malleostapedotomy for otosclerosis, our experience of nitinol piston on twelve patients.

OBJECTIVE: Malleostapedotomy allows to completely by-pass the incus in otosclerosis surgery. Recently its use has been rivaled by hydroxyapatite cement for cases of mild and moderate necrosis of the incus. However, it remains gold standard for cases of extensive necrosis, incus dislocation, or epitympanic fixation. Modern heat-crimping pistons make surgery easier and safer. This study focuses on our experience with this technique. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patient's files and pre- and post-operative audiograms, for cases of surgically treated otosclerosis with malleostapedotomy. RES

Middle ear osteoma causing Eustachian tube obstruction: A case report and literature review.

Middle ear osteoma is an extremely rare benign tumor of the middle ear. Due to its very slow growth rate and benign nature, osteoma of the middle ear can be found incidentally without causing any symptoms. The most common clinical signs are conductive hearing loss, the sense of fullness in the ear, tinnitus, and otorrhea. Small-sized osteomas can be misdiagnosed as otosclerosis without showing any signs other than conductive hearing loss. When the mass becomes very large, and symptoms caused by the tumor increase, treatment also becomes difficult. In this paper, we report a case of middle ear

Impact of surgery in otosclerosis on the non-operated ear.

Backgrounds Otosclerosis is an underlying disease of the bony labyrinth. The hearing loss is most often of conductive nature, in some cases the involvement of the bony part of the cochlea results in mixed hearing loss. Aims: The aim of the analysis was to answer the question whether a surgery on one of the ears affects the state of the other ear in the course of otosclerosis. Methods The analysis included 140 patients hospitalized and operated on between 2010 - 2016. Only patients who had not had a surgical operation within the middle ear due to otosclerosis prior to the study were included in

Disruption of zinc transporter ZnT3 transcriptional activity and synaptic vesicular zinc in the brain of Huntington's disease transgenic mouse.

BACKGROUND: The initial intestinal microbiota acquired from different sources has profound impacts on animal health and productivity. In modern poultry production practices, the source(s) of the establishing microbes and their overall contribution during development of gastrointestinal tract communities are still unclear. Using fertilized eggs from two independent sources, we assessed the impact of eggshell- and environmental-associated microbial communities on the successional processes and bacterial community structure throughout the intestinal tract of chickens for up to 6 weeks post-hatch.

Comparing Gelfoam vs fat as a sealing material in stapedotomy: A prospective double-blind randomised clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: One research aspect of stapes surgery is various materials that are used to seal the oval window. Several materials are used to seal the oval window, for example adipose tissue, perichondrium, vein graft, gelatin sponge (Gelfoam), blood clot and soft connective tissue. Up to now, there has been no randomised clinical trial that has evaluated the effects of different types of sealing material on hearing outcomes after stapedotomy. Hence, the present study aimed to find out which of these materials; fat or Gelfoam was associated with better hearing outcome, when used as a sealing mat

Optical Coherence Tomography Doppler Vibrometry Measurement of Stapes Vibration in Patients With Stapes Fixation and Normal Controls.

HYPOTHESIS: Ears with otosclerotic stapes fixation will exhibit lower-than-normal levels of ossicular mobility as measured by Optical Coherence Tomography Doppler Vibrometry (OCT-DV). BACKGROUND: OCT-DV measures the vibration of middle ear structures in response to sound non-invasively through the intact tympanic membrane. This allows, in particular, direct measurement of the vibration at the lenticular process of the incus which is expected to be lower in patients with otosclerotic stapes fixation. METHODS: OCT-DV was performed on ears presumptively diagnosed with otosclerosis (n = 13) and
