CT Features of Advanced Pericochlear Otosclerosis: Case Report and a Reappraisal of Nomenclature.

BACKGROUND: This case study aimed to report the rare computed tomography (CT) features of advanced pericochlear otosclerosis, with an emphasis on a proposed new nomenclature to describe the imaging findings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman with recurrent rhinosinusitis presented to our center for clinical management. The CT scan revealed the incidental rare findings of advanced retrofenestral otosclerosis in the form of extensive symmetrical pericochlear tubular lucencies in bilateral otic capsules. We coined the new term "C-hoop earring" sign for this CT appearance. She was asymptomat

Assessment of Raftlin and blood count parameters in otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Although otosclerosis is a common disease, its etiology has not yet been clearly elucidated. One of the factors recently implicated in its pathogenesis is chronic inflammation. Blood count parameters are known as classical inflammatory markers in several diseases. Raftlin is also a novel biomarker of inflammation. The present study aimed to investigate Raftlin levels and blood count parameters in otosclerosis. METHODS: The study included 50 otosclerosis patients and 50 healthy volunteers. Serum Raftlin levels and white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts, neutrop

Dimensions of Osseous External Auditory Canal in Otosclerosis Using High-Resolution Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: There is a general idea that the external auditory canal (EAC) is wide in patients with otosclerosis. However, as far as we know, there is no objective measurement of the EAC of patients with otosclerosis. In this study, we aimed to measure objectively the dimensions of the osseous EAC (OEAC) in otosclerosis, using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: High-resolution CT images of cranial bones were obtained from 66 patients with otosclerosis and 48 control individuals using a 256- slice CT scanner with a thickness of 0.67 mm. The dimensions and shape of the OEAC fro

[Endoscopic ear surgery : indications and surgical technique].

Endoscopic ear surgery is a recently developed technique for minimally invasive middle ear reconstruction. It allows for a panoramic and detailed visualization of middle ear structures, enabling precise procedures to be performed with reduced morbidity. Applicable to a wide range of pathologies (cholesteatoma, tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, otosclerosis), it offers anatomical and functional results equivalent to those of traditional microscopic surgery. Despite certain technical challenges (two-dimensional vision, one-handed surgery) and a challenging learning curve, the approach through the e

Artificial intelligence model for automatic 3-dimensional reconstruction of ossicular chain and bony labyrinth from high-resolution CT.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of ossicular chain and bony labyrinth based on temporal bone high-resolution CT (HRCT) is useful for diagnosis and treatment guidance of middle and inner ear diseases. However, these structures are small and irregular, making manual reconstruction time-consuming. PURPOSE: To develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) model based on semisupervised learning for automated 3D reconstruction of ossicular chain and bony labyrinth on HRCT images. METHODS: HRCT images from 304 ears of 152 consecutive patients retrospectively collected from

Effect of Controlled Hypotension on the Outcomes of Stapes Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Stapes surgery (SS) benefits from adequate anesthetic bleeding control due to its microscopic nature and greater difficulty in hemostasis. Adequate hypotension during intervention is considered critical to achieving this goal. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of controlled hypotension (CH) on surgical outcomes in SS. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study in a tertiary academic center with adults submitted to SS from January 2017 to October 2022. Hypotension was considered controlled if the mean intraoperative arterial pressure was between 50 and 65 mmHg throu
