[Diagnostic aspects of neurological diseases of cattle. A retrospective study].

188 bovines with neurological disease were analysed in a retrospective study. We found that only few diseases can be diagnosed on the basis of neurologic signs only. However, with a few additional clinical data such as signalment, history, extraneural findings, hematological findings and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, a diagnosis can be made in many cases. A history of neurologic signs occurring since birth, is highly suggestive of a congenital malformation. High fever and mucosal changes are typical for malignant catarrhal fever. Lesions of peripheral nerves and spinal cord compression can be

The presence and localization of receptors for atrial natriuretic peptide in the inner ear of the guinea pig.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a cardiac hormone known to mediate increased capillary permeability, vasodilation, and natriuresis. Since specific receptors for ANP exist in both the eye and brain, possibly playing a role in ocular and cerebrospinal fluid regulation, we postulated that ANP might also be involved in inner ear fluid dynamics. Autoradiography was used to evaluate whether and where ANP receptors are present in the inner ear. Frozen sections of the cochlea and vestibular organ from guinea pigs (n = 18) were incubated in either 125J-ANP alone or together with an excess of unlabe

Modulation of melanocytes during experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops.

The presence of melanocytes is required for inner ear function. The relationship between melanocytes and inner ear function is not yet known in detail. Melanin scavenges Ca++. The alterated Ca++-homeostasis by experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops (animal model for Ménière's disease) stimulates the melanocytes to motion which results in dispersion of melanosomes and/or dislocation towards areas of transmembrane ion/fluid transport, e.g. secretory cells or capillaries. The intracellular increase of Ca++ initiates formation of membrane invaginations and vesicles seen frequently on the sid

Effect of urea, glycerol, and mannitol on basilar and labyrinthine arteries.

We studied the effect of urea, glycerol, and mannitol on basilar and labyrinthine arteries of dogs in vitro by use of tension recording methods. When the tissue was exposed to urea or glycerol, temporary relaxation of smooth muscles was initially observed, but was followed by gradually increasing contraction. With mannitol, relaxation of the smooth muscles remained stable as long as mannitol existed in the bathing solution. When the specimens were washed with normal Krebs solution after exposure to any of these three substances, large phasic contractions of the smooth muscles were observed. Wh

Outer hair cells as fast and slow cochlear amplifiers with a bidirectional transduction cycle.

Cochlear hair cells fulfil the key function in hearing. However, possible differences in functions of inner and outer hair cells are the subject of a current scientific discussion. In the present paper, we present steps of the sensory transduction in living mammalian hair cells. The transduction is a mechano-electrical process based upon ionic channels in the outer cell membrane. These mechanisms are suggested to be similar in inner and outer hair cells, allowing inner hair cells the actual sound perception. By contrast, the outer hair cells seem to control actively the micromechanics of the i

Immunohistochemical investigation of the human inner ear. Limitations and prospects.

The application of highly sensitive and specific immunohistochemical methods in routine light microscopy has been rewarded by a great many new observations. The essential underlying antigen-antibody reaction has allowed the recognition and identification of some unknown or unidentified components of the cell. Successful results are best achieved by means of reliable fixation and the use of frozen sections. Frozen sections of the human cochlea are, however, impaired by unavoidable damage to the tissues to be studied. The temporal bone has to be decalcified, resulting in a reduction of the range

Vestibular function in experimental endolymphatic hydrops.

Endolymphatic sac ablation in the guinea pig can result in a dilated membranous labyrinth and low-frequency hearing loss similar to patients with Meniere's disease. However, this animal model fails to develop analogous symptoms of a Meniere's crisis such as sudden hearing loss and marked vestibular imbalance. Possibly, factors in addition to endolymphatic hydrops must be present to result in a crisis episode. By placing animals in an inverted posture, their intralabyrinthine pressure was elevated, causing additional stress on the inner ears. Standard electronystagmographic techniques were used

Evoked oto-acoustic emissions from adults and infants: clinical applications.

Evoked oto-acoustic emissions (EOAEs), i.e. sounds emitted by the cochlea in response to a click, are recordable in the ear canal by a miniature microphone. They reflect an active cochlear biomechanism based upon OHC function, which accounts for the exquisite properties of sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the cochlea. EOAE recordings can therefore be considered an objective, easy, rapid and non-invasive audiological procedure which can be used to investigate the most sensitive part of the cochlea. From our experience of more than 300 recordings, we propose several clinical applications

Effects of lidocaine infusion in cats after unilateral labyrinthectomy.

In the auditory/vestibular system, intravenous lidocaine hydrochloride administration has been reported to provide transient relief from severe tinnitus, reduce dizziness and emesis accompanying Meniere's disease, and sometimes improve audiometric thresholds in sensorineural hearing loss. In this study, the labyrinth was destroyed unilaterally in a series of cats. Animals constantly fell and demonstrated prominent contralateral nystagmus and a rotary motion of the head. Within four hours of a 4-mg/kg intravenous lidocaine hydrochloride injection, the cats were able to ambulate freely without f

Abnormal oculovestibular response.

In normal individuals, the visual and vestibular systems interact through a common subcortical center located near the vestibular nuclei. When the patient is healthy, this interaction allows appropriate integration of what might otherwise be conflicting information regarding environmental motion and moving within the environment. In patients with active peripheral vestibular lesions, such as those seen in Meniere's disease, this delicate interaction loses effectiveness. In such patients, optokinetic stimuli are capable of precipitating episodes of incapacitating vertigo with its associated veg

ECoG results in perilymphatic fistula: clinical and experimental studies.

Patients with perilymphatic fistula have been described as having symptoms similar to Meniere's disease and endolymphatic hydrops. Direct clinical or experimental evidence linking the two inner ear disorders has been lacking. An enhancement of the summating potential observed with electrocochleography suggests a diagnosis of ELH in both of these inner ear disorders. In this study, ECoG results of 27 patients with surgically confirmed PLF are reported. Fourteen patients with surgically confirmed spontaneous PLF had abnormal ECoG. Six of these 14 patients had normal hearing. The ECoG changes in

Modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound.

An intense, low-frequency tone (about 30 Hz) modulates the sensitivity of the inner ear to high-frequency stimulation. This modulation is correlated with the displacement of the basilar membrane. The findings suggest that the modulation may also affect cochlear tuning. We have investigated modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound in the guinea pig. Applying indirect methods of measurement (narrow-band analysis of compound action potentials and compound-action-potential tuning curves), the results suggest a shift of the excitation pattern along the basilar membrane towards higher-fr

Recent advances in cochlear blood flow measurements.

Changes in blood flow to the inner ear have been thought to influence or underlie a number of cochlear diseases, including some forms of noise-induced hearing loss, sudden hearing loss, and Meniere's disease. Recently, important advances have been made in two technologies for the study of cochlear blood flow. The first is in the area of vital microscopic studies of cochlear microcirculation, and the second is based on the introduction of laser technology in the form of laser Doppler flowmetry. In this report, measurements are given of changes in cochlear circulation caused by carbon dioxide br

Evoked otoacoustic emissions: a fundamental and clinical survey.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) hold some promise as a fast, objective and noninvasive procedure to study the cochlea at the outer hair cell level. This paper summarizes the fundamental aspects of EOAEs, in particular their relationship with the active biomechanical properties of the cochlea. The properties of EOAEs are analyzed in normally hearing ears, in ears with sensorineural hearing loss, especially in Ménière's disease, in acoustic neuromas and in central deafness; the properties of EOAEs were also evaluated as to their suitability for screening auditory dysfunction in infants.

Physiotherapy in vertigo.

Physiotherapy is often of great value in the treatment of vertigo. In patients with a vestibular loss the physiotherapy should be directed towards the enhancement of central compensation. The inflow of different sensory modalities, visual, proprioceptive and vestibular, should be exercised simultaneously for integration. In cases of orthopedic cervical vertigo, physiotherapy should be directed with caution towards the affected vertebral joints. In muscle tension cervical vertigo, the physiotherapist must include ergonomy and psychological factors in the vertigo treatment.

Surgical treatment of vertigo.

Surgical therapy for disabling vertigo usually comes in at a late stage in the course of treatment for this patient group. The surgical procedures can be divided into two categories: non-destructive and destructive surgery. The former constitutes primarily procedures directed against the endolymphatic sac such as endolymphatic sac shunt procedures or decompression procedures. Peri-endolymphatic shunt procedures have also been proposed by some surgeons. None of these latter procedures have, however, gained widespread clinical acceptance. Destructive surgery is aimed against the end-organ itself

Evaluation of flunarizine in patients with Menière's disease. Subjective and vestibular findings.

In an open multicentre pilot study, 32 patients affected with Menière's disease were treated with the cerebrally effective calcium antagonist flunarizine for 12 weeks. By means of the so-called vestibular index, the therapeutic results could be documented in a rapid and clear manner; the vestibular index takes into account both the subjective statements of the patients and objective pathological vestibular findings in terms of figures. The mean value of this vestibular index of 32 patients with Menière's disease was 9.5 before treatment and only 4.0 at the end of the therapy, which is indicati
