Ménière's disease (MD) is a chronic vestibular disorder characterized by recurrent vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), tinnitus, and aural fullness, with an unpredictable course that can significantly impair quality of life. Endolymphatic hydrops (EH) remains the hallmark histopathological finding; however, its underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood and likely reflects a multifactorial process involving immune, viral, allergic, genetic/familial, and vascular mechanisms. Emerging evidence suggests that EH may represent a secondary manifestation rather than the pr

Background: Although chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been associated with several forms of auditory and vestibular impairment, its relationship with Ménière's disease (MD) has not been well established at the population level. We investigated whether CKD is associated with subsequent development of MD in a large national cohort. Methods: Data were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort for 2002-2019. The analysis included 15,943 participants with CKD and 63,772 comparison participants matched at a 1:4 ratio according to age, sex, household income, a

BACKGROUND: Ménière’s disease (MD) is characterized by episodic vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), tinnitus, and aural fullness, with endolymphatic hydrops (EH) considered its key pathological substrate. Despite advances in EH assessment (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]-based grading and physiologic tests), the strength and consistency of associations between EH severity and audio-vestibular measures remain uncertain. This study aimed to review systematically and meta-analyze correlation coefficients quantifying the relationship between EH severity and audiometric and ves

BACKGROUND: High-frequency bone-conducted vibration (BCV) and skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) are widely used to probe vestibular function, yet their physical nature and physiological targets remain incompletely defined. In particular, the relationship between vibration physics and jerk, the time derivative of acceleration, and their relevance to vestibular activation has not been systematically explored.
OBJECTIVE: To develop an engineering-informed framework for high-frequency vestibular stimulation, linking jerk-rich transient stimuli to otolithic biomechanics and vestibular signa

Ménière's disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear syndrome characterized by vertigo, tinnitus, and fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss. Despite its well-defined clinical presentation, the underlying pathophysiology remains elusive, often resulting in empirical and partially effective treatments. This multicenter pilot study employed 1H NMR-based urinary metabolomics to identify metabolic pathways and potential diagnostic biomarkers related to the disease. The study analyzed 50 urine samples (30 MD patients, 20 controls), identifying 109 metabolites from both endogenous and exogenous sources. Wh

Ménière's disease is a complex disorder of the inner ear, characterized by recurrent episodes of vertigo, progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. The pathophysiology of this condition is dominated by endolymphatic hydrops, reflecting imbalances in fluid regulation and pressure within the membranous labyrinth, which impair cellular function and the transmission of vestibular and auditory signals. Although genetic predisposition provides a susceptible background, recent studies emphasize that non-genetic factors act as critical triggers of clinical events, determining both the on

Ménière's disease (endolymphatic hydrops) is a multifactorial syndrome affecting the inner ear, typically distinguished by attacks of variable frequency which include vertigo, aural fullness, tinnitus, and fluctuating hearing loss. Red ear syndrome is characterized by paroxysmal erythema of the external ear, either unilaterally or bilaterally, with pain, burning sensation, and/or swelling. Both conditions have complex and heterogeneous etiologies. Ménière's disease and red ear syndrome have not previously been associated in the literature, yet they can have overlapping characteristics. BACKGROUND: Treatment for Ménière's disease remains a subject of debate. A surgical technique in which the endolymphatic duct is blocked was proposed as a new treatment modality for patients with intractable Ménière's disease, but a double-blind trial was lacking. Therefore, the aim of this double-blind trial was to assess whether EDB is more effective than ESD in patients with intractable Ménière's disease.
METHODS: This is a double-blind, randomised, multicentre trial comparing endolymphatic duct blockage (EDB) to endolymphatic sac decompression (ESD). Patients had unilateral, active Ménièr
