Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) is a major intracellular pathogen of pigeons that often requires prolonged antimicrobial therapy; however, high-dose oxytetracycline (OTC) may increase toxicity. Glycyrrhizic acid (GA), a bioactive licorice constituent, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial-enhancing properties. This study evaluated whether GA improves the pharmacokinetics, therapeutic efficacy, and safety of OTC against experimental C. psittaci infection in pigeons. C. psittaci was isolated and confirmed via embryonated egg inoculation and real-time PCR. Eighty-four pigeons wer

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci infection can cause severe community-acquired pneumonia with significant mortality. Distinguishing severe from non-severe disease remains challenging. This study used clinical data from patients with C. psittaci pneumonia and multiple machine-learning methods to develop a model for severity classification.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 231 hospitalized patients with C. psittaci pneumonia, including 84 severe cases, between January 2022 and April 2025 in Jiangxi Province, China. Severe pneumonia was defined according to the IDSA/ATS and Chinese adult commu

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is an innovative diagnostic technique that integrates high-throughput sequencing with bioinformatics analysis. Recently, its unbiased approach, broad pathogen coverage, and rapid turnaround have led to its expanded use in diagnosing infectious diseases. This is particularly true for atypical bacterial pathogens such as Chlamydia psittaci, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella spp., for which mNGS has demonstrated significant diagnostic utility. C. psittaci, a highly pathogenic obligate intracellular bacterium, can cause severe

OBJECTIVES: We report a case of Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia in a patient presenting with high fever and generalized myalgia but no cough. As infections with Chlamydia psittaci are potentially misdiagnosed and non-responsive to empirical antibiotic treatment, this report aims to enhance the awareness among the healthcare providers.
METHODS: A 34-year-old male patient developed high fever and fatigue after exposure to poultry. He presented to the hospital for treatment. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a high-density shadow in the deep area of the left lower lung. Sputum culture returned

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia is a zoonotic disease with non-specific clinical manifestations, often leading to delayed diagnosis. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can help us identify pathogens in a timely manner and quickly adjust treatment strategies.
METHODS: We reported two cases of severe Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia with respiratory failure and reviewed relevant literature.
RESULTS: Both patients were diagnosed with Chlamydia psittaci infection through mNGS after routine pathogen testing failed. After using Omadacycline based treatment, the patients' clinical a

Psittacosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, typically transmitted from birds to humans. Its clinical manifestations are often subtle and non-specific, making it prone to being misdiagnosed as common community-acquired pneumonia. Round pneumonia (or spherical pneumonia) refers to a lung infection that appears as a round or oval density on computed tomography (CT). It is uncommon in adults. Spherical pneumonia specifically caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection is particularly uncommon. Here we report a case of a 43-year-old male who was admitted due to a 4-day his

This study presents a rare case of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by a co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), confirmed by targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS). The patient had a history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. He developed fever, fatigue, myalgia and poor appetite two days before admission. He had watched someone slaughter a chicken two days prior to the onset of symptoms. The chest CT revealed consolidative changes. We suspected that the patient might have Chlamydia psittaci infection. Given the low sensitivi

Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, primarily transmitted through the respiratory tract. In humans, the most frequently associated condition is atypical pneumonia, while Chlamydia psittaci remains a relatively uncommon pathogen in cases of community-acquired pneumonia. Historically, reports of pneumonia due to Chlamydia psittaci have been limited, largely due to challenges in diagnosis. However, recent advancements in technologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) have led to an annual increase in reported cases of Chlamydia psittaci infection. Despite this,

This case report describes a rare presentation of severe Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia in a 43-year-old female patient with prominent hypoxemia and gastrointestinal symptoms, and evaluates the efficacy of standardized non-invasive integrated management for critically ill patients with this atypical phenotype. The patient was admitted with lumbago, persistent high fever, progressive dyspnea, severe hypoxemia, and intractable non-bloody watery diarrhea. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed extensive bilateral pulmonary ground-glass opacities and consolidation. Rapid and precise etiological dia

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci infection presents mainly as severe pneumonia, but a subset of patients develop neurological symptoms. Previous reports are largely single cases and frequently lack cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) data, opening pressure and follow-up imaging, which makes the mechanism of neurological involvement difficult to determine.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed three patients with C. psittaci infection confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), all of whom developed neurological manifestations and had complete clinical, CSF, neuroimaging and follow-up data.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) is a pathogenic, gram-negative, aerobic, and obligate intracellular parasite. Humans are primarily infected by inhaling aerosols formed from the feces of infected birds. Previously reported cases of C. psittaci infection are rare. The lack of specific clinical manifestations of psittacosis and the limited detection sensitivity of traditional methods lead to inadequate or delayed diagnosis. In this case, the pres-ence of C. psittaci was confirmed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.
METHODS: Bronchoscopy, next-generat

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia abortus primarily causes abortion and stillbirth in animals and is associated with pregnancy-related complications in humans. However, it is an extremely rare cause of pneumonia in humans. While Chlamydia psittaci is a well-established respiratory pathogen, pneumonia resulting from a co-infection with both species has not been previously reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old male presented with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Imaging revealed extensive pulmonary inflammation and consolidation, which rapidly progressed to respiratory failure. Metagenomic next-

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the legs is a rare but clinically important complication of Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia. We report a case of a 51-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital with fever, cough, and dyspnea. Next-generation sequencing confirmed the diagnosis of Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia. His D-dimer level was elevated on admission, and ultrasound confirmed DVT in the legs. The patient was treated with intravenous doxycycline for the infection and rivaroxaban as an anticoagulant. His condition gradually improved and he was discharged after making a full recovery. In this paper

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is a rare type of lung injury, and while Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia is a zoonotic disease, secondary AFOP has not been previously reported. We present a 53-year-old female with a 13-day history of cough, fever, and shortness of breath. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed multiple bilateral patchy shadows and consolidations in the left lung lower lobe. Empirical treatment was ineffective, and lung lesions worsened. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) confirmed Chlamydia psittaci infection. After minocycline treatment, the
