Chlamydia psittaci is the aetiological agent of chlamydiosis in birds, especially Psittaciformes. The objective of the present study was to detect C. psittaci by means of semi-nested PCR among psittacine birds sold at pet markets and kept as pet birds in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Questionnaires were used to identify risk factors involved in the epidemiology of the disease. In addition, the management of birds and cages was observed at each location studied. The frequency of C. psittaci infection was 10.6% (33/311) in the psittacine birds studied. Birds kept in households were less frequently po

Chlamydia psittaci, the agent of psittacosis in humans, infects a wide range of avian species. To assess the risk of psittacosis posed by domestic birds in the urban environment, the prevalence of C. psittaci antibodies in 413 chickens (Gallus domesticus; 305 caged and 108 free-range), 334 ducks (Anas spp.; 111 caged and 223 free-range) and 312 pigeons (Columba livia) in Lanzhou, north-western China, was detected using the indirect haemagglutination assay. The specific antibodies were found in sera of 55 (13.32 %) chickens, 130 (38.92 %) ducks and 97 (31.09 %) pigeons. Statistical analysis sho

This study aimed to establish and evaluate a bovine respiratory model of experimentally induced acute C. psittaci infection. Calves are natural hosts and pathogenesis may resemble the situation in humans. Intrabronchial inoculation of C. psittaci strain DC15 was performed in calves aged 2-3 months via bronchoscope at four different challenge doses from 10(6) to 10(9) inclusion-forming units (ifu) per animal. Control groups received either UV-inactivated C. psittaci or cell culture medium. While 10(6) ifu/calf resulted in a mild respiratory infection only, the doses of 10(7) and 10(8) induced f

Genetic mapping studies may provide association between sequence variants and disease susceptibility that can, with further experimental and computational analysis, lead to discovery of causal mechanisms and effective intervention. We have previously demonstrated that polymorphisms in immunity-related GTPases (IRG) confer a significant difference in susceptibility to Chlamydia psittaci infection in BXD recombinant mice. Here we combine genetic mapping and network modeling to identify causal pathways underlying this association. We infected a large panel of BXD strains with C. psittaci and asse

The authors would like to present an unusual case of ocular adnexal, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, isolated to a single extraocular muscle. A 59-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of slowly progressive double vision, worse on elevation, for which her optometrist had given her prisms. A swollen left upper eyelid was present for 10 days. CT scan of the brain and orbits revealed a 3 cm × 1.5 cm mass arising from the region of the left superior rectus with no signs of bone erosion. Histology showed infiltration by small lymphoid cells. Stage 1AE low-grade marginal zone B

The respiratory pathogen Chlamydia psittaci naturally occurs in bovine herds and was recently shown to impair calf health in a dose-dependent manner. The aim of this study was to determine whether the functional consequences and immunological reactions of infection were dose related by quantifying the consequences of acute respiratory chlamydial infection on respiratory signs, disturbances of pulmonary gas exchange, response of the innate immune system, and acute-phase reaction. Fourteen calves were challenged intrabronchially with different C. psittaci doses (from 10(6) to 10(9)inclusion-form

Extranodal marginal zone lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) are associated with various infectious pathogens. We analyzed the presence of Chlamydia psittaci, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Chlamydia trachomatis DNA in 47 nongastrointestinal and 14 gastrointestinal MALT lymphomas, 37 nonmalignant control samples, and 27 autoimmune precursor lesions by polymerase chain reaction amplification and direct sequencing. In 47 nongastrointestinal MALT lymphomas, 13 (28%) were positive for C psittaci DNA compared with 4 (11%) of 37 nonmalignant control samples (P = .09). C psittaci was det

Dermanyssus gallinae is a haematophagous ectoparasite responsible for anemia, weight loss, dermatitis and a decrease in egg production. Dermanyssus gallinae may play a role in the modulation of the host immune system, maybe predisposing the host to some bacterial infections such as chlamydiosis. This is an important zoonosis. Humans are exposed to Chlamydia psittaci through inhalation of the agent dispersed from the infected birds. In this study, a syndrome observed in an aviary of canaries was investigated. A heavy infestation by D. gallinae was reported. Simultaneously, a C. psittaci infecti

We present a case of optic neuritis and myelo-radiculopathy as a late association following Chlamydia psittaci infection. A 45-year-old female patient with a prior history of C psittaci pneumonia and subsequent reactive arthritis presented to the neurology unit with severe headache, constitutional symptoms and monocular disturbance in vision. Clinical examination revealed focal signs with brisk upper limb reflexes compared to lower limbs and mild left-sided pyramidal signs. Systemic inflammatory markers were raised and serological studies showed no evidence of re-infection. MRI showed multiple

Most lymphomas that involve the ocular adnexal structure are low grade, B cell, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The treatment depends upon the grade and stage of the disease. High grade lymhoma requires treatment with systemic chemotherapy whereas the localized low grade (extranodal marginal zone lymphoma) can be successfully managed with local radiotherapy. Chlamydia psittaci infection is associated with low grade ocular lymphoma; however there is wide geographic variation in the strength of this association. Blanket antibiotic therapy is not advised unless there is proof of an infective agent. The

New data have recently been reported in ocular adnexal lymphomas (OALs), particularly of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type, regarding their biological characteristics and therapeutic management. A possible association between OAL and Chlamydia psittaci infection has suggested new mechanisms of lymphomagenesis and opened the way for specific targeted treatment. Similarly, the place of rituximab monoclonal antibody therapy and more conventional chemotherapy, as well as a 'wait-and-see' policy in few clearly defined situations, must be defined in relation to the standard treatment opt

Psittacosis, also known as parrot disease, parrot fever and ornithosis, can be transmitted to humans by inhaling dried excreta of infected birds like canaries, parakeets, parrots, pigeons and turkeys. Unless it is specifically thought of and investigated, the diagnosis of psittacosis can easily be missed and without identifying the exact etiology, the disease is usually treated as atypical pneumonia. We diagnosed psittacosis in a mother and her son with Friedreich ataxia, who took care of two parrots in their house. In addition to pneumonia, central nervous system and liver involvement were al

Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL) is a mostly extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL). Recent findings have suggested an association between Chlamydia psittaci (Cp) infection and OAL. We sought to confirm this issue and to analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics of OAL in Korea. Between 1993 and 2004, 33 OAL cases were identified at the Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissues, and touchdown enzyme time release polymerase chain reaction was performed to identify three Chlamydia species (Cp, C. tracomatis, and C. pneumoniae). The same procedures wer

C57BL/6J mice were 10(5)-fold more resistant to Chlamydia psittaci infection than DBA/2J mice by LD(100) determinations. Linkage analysis using BXD recombinant inbred strains revealed a single effector locus at a 1.5-Mbp region on chromosome 11 encoding a cluster of three p47 GTPases (Irgb10, Igtp, and Iigp2). Western blots of infected tissue showed that Irgb10 was elevated in resistant mice and one of the two possible Iigp2 protein isoforms was preferentially expressed in susceptible mice. The BXD39 strain, susceptible at Irgb10 and resistant at Iigp2, had an intermediate phenotype implicatin

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a common low grade B-cell lymphoma arising from a background of chronic inflammatory disease at a number of mucosal sites. Those originating in the stomach are causatively linked to Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication of the bacterium with antibiotics leads to long-term complete regression of the lymphoma in aproximately 70% of cases. Now, there is further evidence of linking Campylobacter jejuni, Borrelia burgdorferi and Chlamydia psittaci infection with immunoproliferative small intestine disease, MALT lymphoma of the skin and oc

Infectious agents play a critical role in MALT lymphoma development. Studies from Italy showed Chlamydia psittaci infection in 87% of ocular adnexal MALT lymphomas and complete or partial regression of the lymphoma after C. psittaci eradication in four of nine cases. However, C. psittaci was not demonstrated in ocular adnexal MALT lymphomas from the USA. This study was thus designed to investigate further the role of C. psittaci, and other infectious agents commonly associated with chronic eye disease, in the development of ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma. The presence of C. psittaci, C. trachoma

The recent literature shows that interest in ocular adnexal lymphomas and their biologic and clinical characteristics--along with their possible association with Chlamydia psittaci infection and therapeutic management with rituximab or anti-Chlamydia psittaci antibiotic therapy--is considerable. These new data have modified the previously reported features of this disease and have made an updated review of the literature necessary. The aims of this review are to present the current knowledge on the biology of these lymphomas, their clinical features and prognostic factors, and the panel of all

A recent report suggesting that ocular adnexal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) may be related to Chlamydia psittaci infection underscores the need for reliable epidemiologic data for this malignancy. We examined population-based incidence data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. During 1992-2001 in the 12 SEER areas, ocular (i.e., eye and adnexa) NHL rates per 100,000 person-years for both sexes were highest among Asians/Pacific Islanders, lower in whites, and lower still in blacks. Incidence increased with advancing age and showed little difference by sex, in contr

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are among the most common primary tumors occurring in the ocular adnexa. Herein, we present a 14-year single-institution experience in 62 patients with primary ocular adnexal lymphomas (OALs). Association with Chlamydia psittaci infection is examined in 57 tumor specimens. Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) was the most frequent histologic subtype (89%). The majority of patients with EMZL (84%) presented with stage E-extranodal (IE), however only 16% had an advanced stage. All stage IE patients were treated with local radiotherapy, whereas patients with disseminated
