Compendium of measures to control Chlamydophila psittaci (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds, 2005.

Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever and ornithosis, is a bacterial infection of humans that can cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems. It is caused by Chlamydophila psittaci, formerly known as Chlamydia psittaci. From 1988 through 2003, 935 human cases of psittacosis were reported to the CDC and most resulted from exposure to infected pet birds, usually cockatiels, parakeets, parrots, and macaws. In birds, C. psittaci infection is referred to as avian chlamydiosis. Infected birds shed the bacteria through feces and nasal discharges, and humans become infected from exposu

A comparative ultrastructural and molecular biological study on Chlamydia psittaci infection in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and non-alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency emphysema versus lung tissue of patients with hamartochondroma.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydiales are familiar causes of acute and chronic infections in humans and animals. Human pulmonary emphysema is a component of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a condition in which chronic inflammation manifested as bronchiolitis and intra-alveolar accumulation of macrophages is common. It is generally presumed to be of infectious origin. Previous investigations based on serology and immunohistochemistry indicated Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection in cases of COPD. Furthermore, immunofluorescence with genus-specific antibodies and electron microscopy suggested

Evidence of Chlamydophila psittaci infection in captive Amazon parrots in Brazil.

The prevalence of Chlamydophila psittaci (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) infection was assessed in 95 apparently healthy, captive Amazon parrots from three breeder collections in southeastern and west-central Brazil. Cloacal swabs from 95 birds were tested for chlamydial antigen, which was detected by direct immunofluorescence (DIF), and serum samples from 44 of these birds were tested for antibodies to C. psittaci using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The prevalences of active infection as detected by DIF were 16.7%, 22.2%, and 56.1%, and seroprevalences were 100%, 87.5%, and 60% in flock

Genetic immunization for Chlamydia psittaci.

Plasmid DNA expressing the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) of an avian Chlamydia psittaci serovar A strain, has been tested for its ability to raise an immune response and induce protection against challenge with the same serovar. A combined parenteral (intramuscular injection) and mucosal route (DNA drops administered to the nares) of DNA inoculation was compared to gene gun-based immunization. The gene gun delivery of pcDNA1/MOMP as well as the intramuscular-intranasal DNA delivery primed both T-helper and B-cell memory although rMOMP-expressing cells did not induce high antibody respons

[Two cases of Chlamydia psittaci infection occurring in employees of the same pet shop].

We report here 2 cases of psittacosis in a pet shop. In the first case, a 44-year-old male was admitted with fever, and a chest radiograph showed an infiltration shadow in the right lower lung. One day later, a colleague of the first patient, a 42-year-old man, developed fever and was admitted. In this patient, chest radiography revealed an infiltration shadow in the left lower lung. Both patients had mild liver dysfunction. The serum titer of a complement fixation (CF) test against Chlamydia psittaci was elevated fourfold in the first case and sixteen-fold in the second on the analysis of pai

Psittacosis with increased gammadelta T cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Experience with two cases of psittacosis is described here in which the number of gammadelta T cell receptor-positive T lymphocytes (gammadelta T cell) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was markedly increased (25.1 and 66.9%) and CD8+ T cells were also increased with reversal of the CD4/CD8 ratio. These values improved to the normal range along with recovery of their radiographical findings. The present findings suggest that gammadelta T cells may play an important role in protection from lung injury caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection.

[Lambing ewes as a source of severe psittacosis in a pregnant woman].

The first documented Dutch case of an ovine Chlamydia psittaci infection concerned a 20-year-old woman in the 26th week of pregnancy, following contact with lambing sheep. She had a severe sepsis and had to be artificially ventilated. Finally, the patient made a full recovery. The preterm born child died directly after birth. The placenta showed an acute intervillitis in which chlamydial antigen was demonstrated immunohistologically. Infection with an ovine C. psittaci was confirmed by sequence analysis of amplified chlamydial DNA from the placenta. Infections with C. psittaci are typically as

Role of polymorphonuclear neutrophils in a murine model of Chlamydia psittaci-induced abortion.

To assess the role of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in Chlamydia psittaci infection in a pregnant mouse model, pregnant and nonpregnant Swiss OF1 mice were depleted of PMNs by treatment with the RB6-8C5 monoclonal antibody before intraperitoneal infection with C. psittaci serotype 1. Nondepleted mice served as infection controls. Depleted mice aborted earlier and had a much higher mortality rate than nondepleted mice. Bacteriological analysis showed that the number of chlamydiae isolated from the spleens of depleted mice at 5 and 7 days postinfection was 100 times greater than that isol

Fulminant psittacosis requiring mechanical ventilation and demonstrating serological cross-reactivity between Legionella longbeachae and Chlamydia psittaci.

Chlamydia psittaci infection typically causes a mild respiratory illness in humans. Severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation or intensive care therapy is an uncommon development. The aetiological agents causing severe community acquired pneumonia often remain undetermined. Serological tests may aid in diagnosis. We present two cases of fulminant psittacosis, one demonstrating early cross-reactivity with Legionella longbeachae.

Protection of turkeys against Chlamydia psittaci challenge by gene gun-based DNA immunizations.

Particle-mediated (Helios Gene Gun) transfer to the turkey epidermis of plasmid DNA expressing the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) of an avian Chlamydia psittaci strain was evaluated for its ability to raise an immune response and protection against challenge with the homologous strain. In turkeys, the delivery of pcDNA1/MOMP coated onto 0.6 microm gold beads was the most efficient compared to immunisations using 1.0 or 1.6 microm gold beads. The delivery of as little as 1 microg pcDNA1/MOMP coated onto 0.6 microm gold beads was efficient. Immunisation with 1.0 microm gold beads required t

Immunocytologic detection of Chlamydia psittaci from cervical and vaginal samples of chronically infected ewes.

An immunocytologic method was developed for the detection of chronic Chlamydia psittaci infection from the reproductive tract of ewes. Vaginal and cervical samples from 8 infected and 2 non-infected ewes were stained with a C. psittaci-specific monoclonal antibody. Cells containing C. psittaci were only detected from the 8 infected ewes and the level of detection varied with respect to the estrus cycle. An increased number of infected cells were observed during the periovulation period, thus indicating an optimal window for detection.

Characterization of the systemic disease and ocular signs induced by experimental infection with Chlamydia psittaci in cats.

In addition to the commonly reported ocular signs, Chlamydia psittaci infection of kittens resulted in fever, lethargy, lameness and reduction in weight gain following ocular instillation of virulent organisms. The appearance of these systemic signs was late with respect to the appearance of ocular symptoms and occurred simultaneously with increasing levels of chlamydia-specific IgG. Measurement of acute phase reactants and IL-6 in plasma indicated that both became elevated concurrent with or slightly after the appearance of fever and remained elevated after the fever began to resolve. Detection of chlamydiosis in a shipment of pet birds, leading to recognition of an outbreak of clinically mild psittacosis in humans.

Avian chlamydiosis was detected in a shipment of > 700 pet birds from a Florida bird distributor that were sold to nine Atlanta-area pet stores in August 1995. Respiratory illness among persons who had recently acquired birds from this shipment was reported to local public health officials. The attack rate of acute respiratory illness was 10.7% among persons in households exposed to birds from the implicated flock vs. 1.8% among control households (odds ratio, 6.60; 95% confidence interval, 1.39-31.2). Illness and serological evidence of infection in the absence of symptoms were more common am

A comparison of DNA amplification, isolation and serology for the detection of Chlamydia psittaci infection in cats.

Chlamydia psittaci is a significant cause of conjunctivitis in cats, but can be difficult to diagnose owing to the small number of organisms in conjunctival swabs. In the United Kingdom laboratory diagnosis is based on three techniques: isolation of the infectious organism, amplification of chlamydial DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or the detection of anti-chlamydial antibodies by immunofluorescence assay. To determine the most sensitive method these techniques were compared in the field. The PCR based on previously published protocols was less sensitive than isolation, but by modi
