Surgical technique protocol for cochlear implantation in post-meningitic ossified cochlea.

INTRODUCTION: Labyrinthitis ossificans is a known complication of bacterial meningitis which results in severe to profound hearing loss. Historically, labyrinthitis ossificans was considered a contraindication for cochlear implantation. However, with advances in technology, cochlear implantation is an accepted treatment for hearing loss in labyrinthitis ossificans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 17 cases with varying degrees of ossification in the cochlea were evaluated and treated at our tertiary referral hospital and cochlear implantation center out of a total of 832 profoundly deaf patients evalua

Neurotologic Findings of Idiopathic Acute Unilateral Audiovestibulopathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Unlike acute unilateral vestibulopathy or vestibular neuritis (AUVP/VN), of which the diagnosis is made based on well-established neurotologic findings, the diagnosis of idiopathic acute unilateral audiovestibulopathy (iAUAV, also known as labyrinthitis) still requires further elucidation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with first-onset acute audiovestibulopathy (AAVS) in a referral-based university hospital in South Korea between March 2018 and September 2024. The results of video-oculography, video head-impulse, and other neuroto

[Inflammatory diseases of the petrous bone].

In most cases, inflammatory diseases of the petrous bone can be diagnosed clinically. However, for certain diseases, the extent of the findings must be assessed using cross-sectional imaging, or important complications such as cerebral complications must be excluded. The petrous bone is part of the temporal bone, consisting of the pars squamosa, pars tympanica, and pars mastoidea [1]. It encompasses the inner ear, the internal auditory canal, and the petrous bone itself. Anatomically, the middle ear and mastoid already belong to the pars tympanica and pars mastoidea [1]. Imaging should ideally

Labyrinthitis Complicating Acute Otitis Media in an 18-Month-Old Infant.

Labyrinthitis is a peripheral vestibular disorder characterized by the sudden onset of vertigo and imbalance. It typically affects adults and can significantly impair daily functioning. Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation and the exclusion of central causes. Early management is crucial to reduce the duration of symptoms and prevent complications. Long-term outcomes vary, with some individuals experiencing persistent vestibular dysfunction. This report presents a case of an 18-month-old infant diagnosed with labyrinthitis of the right ear secondary to acute otitis media.

Retrospective Review of MR Findings in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Associated Clinical Features.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a dramatic and often frightening condition that benefits from prompt treatment. While most cases of SSNHL are idiopathic, a retrocochlear pathology is expected to account for some presenting cases of SSNHL. This study aims to assess the presence of retrocochlear pathology in SSNHL and ascertain whether clinical features could help determine their presence on MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a patient data registry from 2015 to 2022. Patients who underwent MRI of the internal audito

Post-traumatic Ossifying Labyrinthitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Labyrinthitis ossificans is a rare but serious complication that can occur following inner ear trauma, often resulting in irreversible sensorineural hearing loss. We present the case of a 22-year-old male who developed progressive sensorineural hearing loss after a motor vehicle accident. High-resolution CT and MRI revealed ossification within the membranous labyrinth, consistent with labyrinthitis ossificans. This case highlights the importance of early radiologic assessment in post-traumatic hearing loss, as timely diagnosis is essential for optimizing cochlear implantation outcomes and pres

Inner ear signs and symptoms induced by antidepressants: a disproportionality analysis based on the FAERS database.

This study utilizes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to analyze adverse reactions related to inner ear signs and symptoms potentially associated with antidepressant use. By examining FAERS data from the first quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2023, we observed higher reporting rates of tinnitus, vertigo, labyrinthitis, positional vertigo, and vestibular ataxia in association with antidepressants. Through de-duplication, standardization, and classification of the data, we identified adverse reaction reports linked to inner ear

Atypical pediatric orbital cellulitis with cavernous sinus thrombosis and petrous apicitis: a case report.

Orbital cellulitis is a serious vision and potentially life-threatening condition. In this case report, we present a 3-year-old boy who was admitted with orbital cellulitis, complicated by an intraconal orbital abscess, cavernous sinus thrombosis, petrous apicitis, labyrinthitis, and mastoiditis. There was no paranasal sinusitis, which is the most common cause of orbital cellulitis. His condition initially did not improve with intravenous antibiotics, but gradually improved after drainage of the orbital abscess with anticoagulant followed by corticosteroid therapy. We illustrate the importance

Decongestants and antihistamines for acute otitis media in children.

RATIONALE: Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common bacterial infections in children worldwide, and the most common reason for prescribing antibiotics. Although serious complications (e.g. mastoiditis or meningitis) are rare, the infection causes acute pain and can lead to hearing impairment. Since AOM often resolves spontaneously, current treatment guidelines recommend an approach of watchful waiting (no initial antibiotics). However, decongestants and antihistamines, administered orally or nasally, might reduce inflammation and mucosal oedema in the middle ear and help resolve AOM

"An Unusual Case of Bilateral Sudden Mixed Hearing Loss with Complete Remission": A Case Report and Pathophysiological Considerations.

Background: Sudden-onset bilateral mixed hearing loss in adults is an extremely rare condition but challenging to diagnose and treat. Conductive hearing loss is associated with otitis media, while the simultaneous presence of a sensorineural component requires supplementary investigation for possible shared pathophysiological mechanisms. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 41-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with a 48 h history of bilateral, fast progressive hearing loss following a viral illness. The audiologic testing revealed bilateral severe mixed hearing loss. Tympano
