[Labyrinthitis ossificans].

Labyrinthitis ossificans is a pathology consisting of calcification of the membranous labyrinth resulting in profound sensory deafness. It is usually due to an acute inflammatory process that progresses to ossification of the labyrinth. The clinical manifestations are irreversible hearing loss, dizziness and vomiting. It is diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is important to make the correct diagnosis before cochlear implantation, as ossification of the labyrinth can hinder or prevent the implantation of electrodes.

Long-term outcomes of pediatric temporal bone fractures with hearing loss: Results of a multinational database analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric temporal bone fractures (TBFs) can result in adverse outcomes including meningitis, significant sensorineural hearing loss requiring cochlear implantation (CI), facial nerve weakness, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, and labyrinthitis. The objective of this study is to determine the risks of these outcomes for TBFs with hearing loss. METHODS: Using the multinational TriNetX database, a retrospective cohort study was performed of patients less than 18 years old with diagnostic codes for other fracture of base of skull and hearing loss to serve as an approximation of TBF.

Pneumococcal Meningitis Induces Hearing Loss and Cochlear Ossification Modulated by Chemokine Receptors CX3CR1 and CCR2.

PURPOSE: Pneumococcal meningitis is a major cause of hearing loss and permanent neurological impairment despite widely available antimicrobial therapies to control infection. Methods to improve hearing outcomes for those who survive bacterial meningitis remains elusive. We used a mouse model of pneumococcal meningitis to evaluate the impact of mononuclear phagocytes on hearing outcomes and cochlear ossification by altering the expression of CX3CR1 and CCR2 in these infected mice. METHODS: We induced pneumococcal meningitis in approximately 500 C57Bl6 adult mice using live Streptococcus pneumo

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Prediction of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Patients with Neuroinfections.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be useful in detecting labyrinthitis and thereby predicting the development of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in adults with central nervous system (CNS) infections. We therefore investigated the coherence between brain MRI and SNHL among adults with CNS infections. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with bacterial or viral meningitis, viral encephalitis, or Lyme neuroborreliosis, who had a brain MRI during the acute disease and pure-tone audiometry at follow-up, were included. Neuroradiologists were blinded to the audiometric outcome when ratin

A cadaveric temporal bone study of the anatomical landmarks for middle turn cochleostomy.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine anatomical landmarks for accurate and safe middle turn cochleostomy on cadaveric temporal bones. METHODS: In 17 cadaveric wet adult temporal bones, cortical mastoidectomy was performed, followed by extended posterior tympanotomy through which a middle turn opening was created anterior to the stapes footplate. Micro-measurements of various lengths were taken from the cochleostomy to normal middle-ear anatomical landmarks using a digital microscope. RESULTS: The mean length from the middle turn cochleostomy to the processus cochleariformis was 1.8 ± 0.3

Advanced imaging of head and neck infections.

When head and neck infection is suspected, appropriate imaging contributes to treatment decisions and prognosis. While contrast-enhanced CT is the standard imaging modality for evaluating head and neck infections, MRI can better characterize the skull base, intracranial involvement, and osteomyelitis, implying that these are complementary techniques for a comprehensive assessment. Both CT and MRI are useful in the evaluation of abscesses and thrombophlebitis, while MRI is especially useful in the evaluation of intracranial inflammatory spread/abscess formation, differentiation of abscess from

Intra-operative identification of a temporal bone fracture line during cochlear implant surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone fractures are divided into otic capsule sparing and otic capsule involving fractures. In the latter, hearing loss, facial nerve paralysis, cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis have been reported to occur. The impact of hearing loss can be devastating, especially when occurring in children, with significant risk to speech development and sound localization. In the event of hearing loss, early rehabilitation is therefore of paramount importance. Identification of an intra-operative fracture line with available images and the outcome of such cases has not been reporte

Infliximab for the Treatment of Inflammatory Labyrinthitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Inflammatory labyrinthitis is defined as a fluctuant vestibulo-cochlear syndrome associated with an impairment of the blood-labyrinthine barrier (BLB) on delayed FLAIR MRI sequences. Systemic and intratympanic corticosteroids are the gold standard treatment but their effect is frequently insufficient. The objective is here to determine whether infliximab could be of value in the treatment of bilateral inflammatory labyrinthitis. A retrospective monocentric study was conducted between January 2013 and December 2021. All patients included in the study were affected with a bilateral vestibulo-coc

Neuroanatomical Localization of the Vestibular Cortex: A Case Report.

Vertigo, a symptom of illusory movement, is caused by asymmetry of the vestibular system. The vestibular system consists of the vestibular labyrinth, cranial nerve VIII, brainstem vestibular nuclei, cerebellum, ocular motor nuclei, spinal cord, and less well-defined cerebral projections. In this day and age of artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced imaging, and cutting-edge research in the field of neurology, the exact cortical control of vestibular function is still uncharted. A 45-year-old woman with a past medical history of labyrinthitis about 4.5 years ago (resolved) presente
