A Pandora's box in feline medicine: presenting signs and surgical outcomes in 58 previously hoarded cats with chronic otitis media-interna.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to report clinical findings, surgical complications and outcomes for previously hoarded cats treated surgically for otitis media-interna (OMI) and to investigate the risk factors for complications and poor outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of 58 cats from an institutional hoarding environment that underwent ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO). RESULTS: Inappetence was uncommon at presentation (9/58, 16%) compared with pruritus/alopecia (50%), nasopharyngeal signs (45%), otitis externa (OE) (79%) and otitis interna (OI) (ataxia ± hea

Non-Syndromic Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children.

Pediatric hearing loss is common with significant consequences in terms of language, communication, social and emotional development, and academic advancement. Radiological imaging provides useful information regarding hearing loss etiology, prognosis, therapeutic options, and potential surgical pitfalls. This review provides an overview of temporal bone imaging protocols, an outline of the classification of inner ear anomalies associated with sensorineural hearing loss and illustrates some of the more frequently encountered and/or important causes of non-syndromic hearing loss.

Case report: MRI changes of the inner ear in an MD patient with suspected immune dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to present the progressive changes from labyrinthitis to endolymphatic hydrops (EH) demonstrated in the inner ear MRI of a patient with MD and suspected immune dysfunction. PATIENT: This 31-year-old male was diagnosed with MD and suspected autoimmune diseases. INTERVENTIONS: Immunosuppressants and biological agents. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: Inner ear MRI images. RESULTS: Changes in the patient's progress revealed that inner ear immune and inflammatory changes might induce EH, which may eventually turn into MD. CONCLUSION: This case is the

Postmeningitic pediatric hearing loss from non-type b Haemophilus influenzae.

BACKGROUND: Postmeningitic hearing loss from Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) is increasingly due to encapsulated serotypes other than type b (Hib) and nontypeable strains (collectively, nHiB H. influenzae). Pediatric hearing loss after nHib H. influenzae meningitis remains poorly described. METHODS: Retrospecive case series of nHiB H. influenzae meningitis cases identified from a microbiologic database at Children's Hospital Colorado from 2000 to 2020. Literature regarding nHiB H. influenzae and H. influenzae postmeningitic hearing loss was also reviewed. RESULTS: Eleven cases of nHib

Idiopathic Labyrinthitis: Symptoms, Clinical Characteristics, and Prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Labyrinthitis is an inner ear disorder of unknown incidence, characterized by sudden hearing loss and concurrent vertigo. Cohort studies of patients diagnosed with labyrinthitis are nonexistent. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients diagnosed with idiopathic labyrinthitis. METHODS: Patients with labyrinthitis in the absence of a clear viral, bacterial, or autoimmune pathogenesis were retrospectively identified from electronic patient files. Symptoms at presentation and results from vestibular testing were retrieved. The 9-item Vestibula

Acute labyrinthitis: a manifestation of COVID-19 in a teenager.

Audiovestibular symptoms following COVID-19 have been long acknowledged, especially in adults. However, acute labyrinthitis presenting as an early manifestation of COVID-19 has not been reported in children. We report COVID-19-induced acute labyrinthitis in a teenager. We report on a boy in his early adolescence with a sudden onset of spinning sensation, imbalance and unilateral hearing loss with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test. Vestibular investigations point towards right labyrinthine hypofunction, and an audiometry test revealed right-sided severe hearing loss. Symptoms improved gradually with s

[A case report of middle ear cholesteatoma complicated with labyrinthine fistulaand delayed endolymphatic hydrops].

Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) is a rare disease that causes vertigo and is often misdiagnosed as other vertigo diseases. This article reports on a patient with vertigo who was easily misdiagnosed. The patient was a middle ear cholesteatoma complicated by labyrinthine fistula (LF); however, his vertigo was episodic vertigo, which could not be explained solely by LF causing labyrinthitis. The possibility of endolymphatic hydrops was suspected, which was confirmed by inner ear magnetic resonance gadolinium imaging. This is the first reported case of middle ear cholesteatoma complicated by L

Labyrinthitis Ossificans in a Post-Splenectomy Patient With Meningitis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

This report describes a case of cochlear implantation to treat profound deafness three months after a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in a patient with a remote history of splenectomy. A 71-year-old woman with a remote history of a splenectomy over 20 years before presented with bilateral profound deafness that occurred as sequela from pneumococcal meningitis three months prior. The patient had been vaccinated against the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV-23). The audiometric evaluation revealed no response in either ear. Imaging was suggestive of complete ossification of th

Pediatric tinnitus: The role of neuroimaging.

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound without an external source and can be categorized as either pulsatile or nonpulsatile (ie, continuous). A variety of etiologies have been reported to cause pediatric tinnitus, many with long-lasting implications due to hearing and concentration impairments. Therefore, imaging can be an essential part of the accurate and timely diagnosis of treatable etiologies. We describe neuroimaging findings in different etiologies of pediatric tinnitus. Etiologies of pulsatile tinnitus are frequently vascular in nature and include vascular loops, congenital va

Labyrinthitis ossificans following severe acute otitis media.

Labyrinthitis occurs because of the inflammation of the inner ear. We present a rare case of labyrinthitis ossificans following an acute otitis media. The T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed decreased signal intensity in the right inner ear due to labyrinthitis ossificans, consistent with the clinical presentation.

Case Report: Suppurative Labyrinthitis Induced by Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media.

A discussion on suppurative labyrinthitis associated with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) may seem to be an outdated issue due to the advent of antibiotics in the last century. In previous literature, limited cases of suppurative labyrinthitis have been reported. This case, therefore, is an excellent and rare opportunity to study its clinical symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments. This report described the case of a 39-year-old female with a history of CSOM for 20 years, and she often presented with otorrhea, vestibular disorder, and hearing impairment. CT of the temporal bone revealed f

Unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss in post-COVID-19 patients: Case report.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an otologic emergency. Sensorineural hearing loss needs to be distinguished from conductive when patients present with sudden hearing loss at the primary care level. Prompt diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss with pure tone audiometry and immediate treatment by an otolaryngologist can improve the hearing outcome. To date, few case reports exist about SSNHL among post-COVID-19 patients, and none were reported in Malaysia. Here, we present two cases of SSNHL in patients after COVID-19 infection. We wish to highlight the association of SSNHL follow
