Bilateral total deafness after preparation of wild boar meat.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus suis is responsible for a zoonosis for which Suidae (pigs and wild boars) constitute the reservoir, mainly in Asia, with a much lower prevalence in Europe. The predominant clinical manifestation is meningitis, possibly resulting in deafness. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman hospitalised for meningitis complicated by labyrinthitis, occurring several hours after preparing a meal composed of wild boar meat. Despite the presence of intracochlear fibrosis, the patient was managed by sequential bilateral cochlear implants. DISCUSSION: The discussion presents a

Histopathological changes to the peripheral vestibular system following meningitic labyrinthitis.

OBJECTIVE: While cochlear ossification is a common sequalae of meningitic labyrinthitis, less is known about the effects of meningitis on peripheral vestibular end organs. Herein, we investigate histopathologic changes in the peripheral vestibular system and cochlea in patients with a history of meningitic labyrinthitis. METHODS: Temporal bone (TB) specimens from patients with a history of meningitis were evaluated and compared to age-matched controls. Specimens were evaluated by light microscopy and assessed for qualitative changes, including the presence of vestibular and/or cochlear endoly

Acute vestibular syndrome and hearing loss mimicking labyrinthitis as initial presentation of multiple sclerosis.

Acute vestibular syndrome is most often caused by vestibular neuritis or stroke, although demyelinating diseases may be responsible for 4% of all AVS episodes. The authors present the case of a previously healthy 17-year-old female patient complaining of spontaneous vertigo and right-sided hearing loss. Otoneurological examination suggested a peripheral vestibular cause and video head impulse test revealed a reduced vestibulo-ocular reflex gain. The presence of sensorineural hearing loss raised the suspicion of a central cause and prompted imaging evaluation. A brain MRI evidenced demyelinatin

Pediatric sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Experience in a pediatric ENT emergency care center.

OBJECTIVES: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is relatively rare and its physiopathology remains unclear, particularly in children. Our goal was to evaluate clinical characteristics, etiologies, management, treatment outcomes and prognostic factors in the pediatric population. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all children registered for SSNHL between August 2004 and September 2017 in a tertiary care pediatric hospital. We analysed data regarding clinical symptoms, audiological characteristics, diagnostic investigations and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Thirty-five

Clinical signs, MRI findings and outcome in dogs with peripheral vestibular disease: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular dysfunction is relatively common in dogs, with a prevalence of 0.08% reported in primary veterinary care in the UK. There are several studies investigating how to differentiate between peripheral and central vestibular disease but only limited information regarding the possible underlying causes for peripheral vestibular dysfunction in dogs. This study therefore aimed to describe the clinical signs, magnetic resonance imaging findings (MRI), underlying causes and outcome in a large population of dogs diagnosed with peripheral vestibular disease. RESULTS: One hundred eig

HHV 6-7 reactivation causing Pityriasis Rosea and labyrinthitis: A case report.

Pityriasis Rosea (PR) and labyrinthitis are most commonly caused by viral infections. PR presents with a characteristic rash while labyrinthitis presents with vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. However, the coexistence of PR and Labyrinthitis remains an uncommon event. Human Herpes Virus (HHV) 6 and 7, are common infections in childhood, and their reactivation causes Pityriasis Rosea. But these viruses are not known to have any involvement with the inner ear or the 8th cranial nerve (CN).

Otopathologic Analysis of Patterns of Postmeningitis Labyrinthitis Ossificans.

OBJECTIVE: Labyrinthitis ossificans (LO) may occur following meningitis and, in cases where cochlear implantation is indicated, complicate electrode insertion. LO is critical to identify for successful cochlear implantation, and histopathology is more sensitive than imaging for identification of LO. Herein we utilize otopathologic techniques to study the timing and location of intracochlear tissue formation following meningitic labyrinthitis (ML). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Academic institution. METHODS: Temporal bone specimens with a history of bacterial ML were histologi

Anatomical and Pathological Findings of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of measurable parameters of internal auditory canal (IAC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the patients with ISSNHL who underwent IAC MRI from January 2008 to March 2019. Measurable parameters of IAC MRI, such as the diameter of the IAC, bony cochlear nerve canal, and cross-sectional area of the cochlear nerve, were measured by a single examiner. These parameters were then compared between

Floating labyrinth: A unique finding on CT scan.

We report a case of a 67-year-old female patient that presented to the emergency department with complete right facial paralysis, progressive hearing loss and chronic otorrhea. A unique finding on CT scan is reported: a "floating labyrinth" - cochlea, vestibule and semicircular canals extensively surrounded by soft tissue density material but with intact thinned otic capsule walls. A transotic approach was performed for removal of noncholesteatomatous inflammatory tissue; intravenous antibiotics and corticosteroids led to partial recovery of facial nerve function. A chronic suppurative otitis

Intraoperative auditory brainstem response monitoring during semicircular canal plugging surgery in treatment of Meniere's disease.

BACKGROUND: Three semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) is an optimized treatment for intractable Meniere's disease (MD). However, 20-30% of patients experience hearing loss after TSCP, for reasons that remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hearing loss resulting from TSCP. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 12 patients, which were diagnosed with definite MD and consented to TSCP surgery. Intraoperative auditory brainstem response (ABR) was monitored in each surgical procedure. RESULTS: After opening the mastoid cavity, the ABR threshold increased to 77.08 ± 9.88 dB nHL. The ABR thresh

Labyrinthitis and Labyrinthitis Ossificans - A case report and review of the literature.

Labyrinthitis most commonly results from an infectious and less commonly from an inflammatory process of the inner ear, but it can be associated with temporal bone trauma, hemorrhage, or tumor. This inflammation (regardless of the etiology) disrupts the transmission of sensory information from the ear to the brain. Labyrinthitis ossificans is the pathological ossification of the membranous labyrinthine spaces in response to an insult to the inner ear involving membranous labyrinth or the endosteum of the otic capsule. Herein, we present a case of a 67-year-old female with progressive bilateral

Standard Programming of Retrograde Electrode Insertion via Middle-Turn Cochleostomy in Labyrinthitis Ossificans.

Successful cochlear implantation in the setting of labyrinthitis ossificans is challenging. Various surgical techniques are described to circumvent the region of ossification and retrograde insertion of the electrode array is one such option. While reverse programming is often recommended in the case of retrograde electrode insertion, we present our experience of retrograde electrode insertion for labyrinthitis ossificans, where standard programming was adopted due to patient preference and provided satisfactory outcomes.

Pathological changes from the originating to the peripheral sites of Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma are the underlying mechanisms of preoperative MRI-tumor origin prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Sheehan syndrome (SS) represents a rare cause of hypopituitarism. Data evaluating the quality of life (QoL) in women with SS are scarce. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the QoL in women with SS and to develop a clinical assessment score. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including 62 women with hypopituitarism secondary to SS and 62 matched controls. QoL was evaluated using the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). QoL was considered good if the SF-36 overall score was > 60. Factors associated with a good QoL were determined. A score including the fact
