INTRODUCTION: The high incidence of skin cancer in Brazil has resulted in an urgent need for more efficient methods of reducing the time between initial diagnosis and therapy. Such delays are significant in large countries like Brazil, where a considerable proportion of the population live in remote areas with limited access to specialized medical care. To address this problem the use of mobile phones as screening devices for suspicious skin lesions has been incorporated as long-distance teledermatology services. Digital photography is now a convenient ancillary option to minimize treatment de

INTRODUCTION: Labyrinthine fistula is one of the most common complications associated with cholesteatoma. It represents an erosive loss of the endochondral bone overlying the labyrinth. Reasons for cholesteatoma-induced labyrinthine fistula are still poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate patients with cholesteatoma, in order to identify possible risk factors or clinical findings associated with labyrinthine fistula. Secondary objectives were to determine the prevalence of labyrinthine fistula in the study cohort, to analyze the role of computed tomography and to describe the hearing results

BACKGROUND: Humans detect motion and gravity via the labyrinthine system of the inner ear, which consists of the vestibule and the semicircular canals. The vestibular system provides three major functions for maintaining balance and orientation. First, it maximizes the effectiveness of the visual system. Second, it provides orientational information necessary for performing both skilled and reflexive motor activities. Third, in the absence of vision, the vestibular system provides a reasonably accurate perception of motion and position. Although these organs provide important cues for basic or

OBJECTIVE: Hyperacusis is a reduction of normal tolerances for everyday sounds. Although several publications have been produced demonstrating that minimally invasive surgical procedures may improve patient symptoms, the precise etiology of hyperacusis often remains elusive. This study describes 21 patients, 7 of whom stapes hypermobility is believed to be a mechanical genesis of their hyperacusis symptoms.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, repeated-measure single-arm design was used for this study.
SETTING: All patients were evaluated and treated at a tertiary level otologic referral center.

The inner and middle ear are connected mainly through round and oval windows, and inflammation in the middle ear cavity can spread into the inner ear, which might induce a disturbance. In cases with intractable otitis media, attention should also be paid to symptoms related to the inner ear. In this paper, middle ear inflammation and related inner ear disturbances are reviewed with a focus on representative middle ear diseases (such as acute otitis media, chronic otitis media, otitis media with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, eosinophilic otitis media, cholesteatoma

Background. False negative fistula testing in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media is a dilemma when proceeding to surgery. It is imperative to rule out a dead labyrinth or a mass effect secondary to the cholesteatoma in an otherwise normally functioning inner ear. We present a case series of three patients in whom a bedside vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) evaluation using a head impulse test was used successfully for further evaluation prior to surgery. Results. In all three cases with a false negative fistula test we were able to further evaluate at the bedside and were not only able

BACKGROUND: Underwater endoscopic ear surgery does not require suction and so protects the inner ear from unexpected aeration that may damage its function in the treatment of labyrinthine fistula. A method of underwater endoscopic ear surgery is proposed for the treatment of superior canal dehiscence.
METHODS: Underwater endoscopic ear surgery was performed for plugging of the superior semicircular canal through the transmastoid approach. Saline solution was infused into the mastoid cavity through an Endo-Scrub Lens Cleaning Sheath. The tip of the inserted endoscope was filled completely with

The objective of the study was to evaluate postoperative hearing and disease control after cholesteatoma surgery for labyrinthine fistulas. In a retrospective cohort study, we evaluated a consecutive cohort comprising 44 patients (45 ears) with labyrinthine fistulas associated with chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma who underwent surgery between 2002 and 2015. We looked at patient characteristics, pre- and postoperative bone conduction thresholds (BCT), operative approach and findings, extent of disease and the occurrence of residual disease. All deaf ears (24%) presented preoperatively w

This chapter will focus on vertigo/dizziness due to inner-ear malformations, labyrinthine fistula, otosclerosis, infectious processes, and autoimmune inner-ear disorders. Inner-ear malformation due to dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal is the most recently described inner-ear malformation. Vertigo/dizziness is typically induced by sound and pressure stimuli and can be associated with auditory symptoms (conductive or mixed hearing loss). Labyrinthine fistula, except after surgery for otosclerosis, in the context of trauma or chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma, still remains a ch

OBJECTIVE: Patients with incidental or minimally symptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) are usually observed, without surgical repair. However, it remains unknown whether a labyrinthine fistula of the superior semicircular canal is associated with progressive conductive or sensorineural hearing loss over time.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review at two tertiary care academic referral centers.
METHODS: Adults analyzed were diagnosed with SSCD by high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography and vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing and observed with a minimum of t
