Praziquantel degradation in marine aquarium water.

This study has aimed to determine the anatomical site of labyrinthine fistula in patients of chronic suppurative otitis media at our centre. Labyrinthine fistulae (LF) are caused by abnormal communications between the inner ear and surrounding structures resulting in perilymph leakage and hearing loss. Labyrinthine fistula represents as erosive loss of the enchondral bone overlying the semicircular canals without loss of perilymph. The manifestations of fistula like vertigo, hearing loss vary in severity and complexity, commonly ranging from very mild to incapacitating. Cholesteatoma induced f

Some Remarks on Imaging of the Inner Ear: Options and Limitations.

The temporal bone has a highly complex anatomical structure, in which the sensory organs of the cochlea and the vestibular system are contained within a small space together with the sound-conducting system of the middle ear. Detailed imaging is thus required in this anatomical area. There are a great many clinical aims for which the highest-possible spatial resolution is required. These include the localization of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas, the detection of malformations of the middle and inner ear and the vestibulocochlear nerve, an aberrant course of the facial nerve and anomalies of the

A retrospective study on post-operative hearing of middle ear cholesteatoma patients with labyrinthine fistula.

CONCLUSIONS: There is no significant change in bone conduction threshold after operation, so the tympanoplasty can be done to maintain hearing when conditions allow. OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of surgical treatment on hearing of cholesteatoma patients with labyrinthine fistula. METHODS: The clinical data of 35 patients (35 ears) with labyrinthine fistula, which were caused by cholesteatoma, were analyzed retrospectively. The hearing of 21 patients was followed up. RESULTS: Three months to 5 years follow-up of 21 patients were accomplished by pure tone audiometry and other details. There

Suppurative labyrinthitis associated with otitis media: 26 years' experience.

INTRODUCTION: Suppurative labyrinthitis continues to result in significant hearing impairment, despite scientific efforts to improve not only its diagnosis but also its treatment. The definitive diagnosis depends on imaging of the inner ear, but it is usually clinically presumed. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical factors and hearing outcomes in patients with labyrinthitis secondary to middle ear infections and to discuss findings based on imaging test results. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study, based on the charts of patients admitted with middle ear infection-associated labyrinthitis. R

Unruptured translabyrinthine meningocele without CSF otorrhea.

Labyrinthine meningocele can be classified into translabyrinthine and perilabyrinthine type. We describe a case of rare unruptured translabyrinthine meningocele (TLM). It is rare to encounter an unruptured TLM because it is usually diagnosed after rupture as a labyrinthine fistula, cerebral spinal fluid otorrhea, and subsequent meningitis. We provide for the first time an intraoperative photo and video of a case of an unruptured TLM that developed through an inner ear malformation in a single-side deaf child, which was preoperatively misdiagnosed as congenital cholesteatoma in preoperative tem

A case of labyrinthine fistula by cholesteatoma mimicking lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Acute peripheral vestibulopathy, of which the chief complaint is positional vertigo, comprises benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, labyrinthine fistula, and cerebellopontine angle tumors. Since the typical presentation of labyrinthine fistulas may be sensorineural hearing loss, positional vertigo, or disequilibrium, it is often difficult to distinguish from BPPV or Meniere's disease. Herein we report a 61-year-old female patient with typical symptoms and signs attributable to geotropic type variant of the lateral semicircular canal BPPV on the left side, who eventually

Epidemiology of intratemporal complications of otitis media.

Introduction Despite the advent of antibiotics and immunizations in the last century, complications of otitis media remain quite frequent, have high morbidity and mortality rates, and pose a challenge to the otorhinolaryngologist. Objective To establish the annual incidence of intratemporal complications of otitis media and prospectively evaluate patients via an analysis of epidemiologic and clinical aspects. Methods Prospective, observational study. Between February 2010 and January 2011, patients admitted to a tertiary care, university-based otology practice with diagnosis of otitis media an

Actinomycotic mastoiditis complicated by sigmoid sinus thrombosis and labyrinthine fistula.

Actinomyces is a rare pathogen that can be the cause of infections in the digestive and urinary tracts, skin, genitalia, and lungs, which generally have an indolent clinical course. However, in some cases these can be locally destructive and become generalized infections. Actinomyces has been previously implicated in infections of the middle ear, nasopharynx, and sinuses, occasionally causing complications such as chronic mastoiditis. Here we describe the case of a 10-year-old-male presenting with nausea, vomiting, and headache who developed intracranial complications of actinomycotic mastoidi

Tumours of Deep Lobe of Parotid Gland: Our Experience.

BACKGROUND: Although it has long been believed that stress has a detrimental effect on health and the risk of disease, little research has been done on the precise mechanisms by which this happens. The literature produced by past workers suggests many possibly intersecting mechanistic pathways that might be useful for future fundamental and clinical study. Exercise has been thoroughly researched as a non-pharmacologic strategy to increase bone mass. Many evidence-based treatment recommendations for patients suffering from osteoporosis-related fractures, potential courses of care, and rehabilit

Intratemporal complications of otitis media.

UNLABELLED: Otitis media (OM) is considered a potentially severe disease due to the risk of complications. OBJECTIVE: To establish the annual incidence of intratemporal complications (ITC) resulting from OM and to prospectively assess patients for epidemiological and clinical factors. METHOD: This prospective cohort study included patients admitted during one year at a university hospital diagnosed with intratemporal complications of OM. Patients were analyzed for age, gender, type of intratemporal complication, treatment, and clinical outcome. The overall incidence of complications and the

Clinical characteristics of patients with labyrinthine fistulae caused by middle ear cholesteatoma.

BACKGROUND: Labyrinthine fistula (LF) is a very common clinical complication mainly caused by middle ear cholesteatoma. Whether the presence of different degree LF caused by middle ear cholesteatoma aggravates neurosensory hearing loss (NSHL) and what is the degree of the hearing loss caused by LF were still under controversial. This study aimed to investigate whether the LF degree is correlative with the age distribution, disease duration and hearing loss degree for cholesteatomatous patients. METHODS: The files of 143 patients with middle ear cholesteatoma were selected and reviewed in a re
