The analysis of 51 CTs of the temporal bone in patients aged from 2 to 74 years with otitis media purulenta chronica, cholesteatoma has established that cholesteatoma of different location and severity has specific CT-symptoms. A reliable diagnostic key to CT-diagnosis of cholesteatoma is attic deformation due to destruction of the lateral wall by a soft tissue lesion, extension of the aditus to the antrum, the presence of the cavity with sclerotic walls in the antromastoid area, carious changes in the auditory ossicles, medial or lateral shift of the ossicles. CT registers carious alterations

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the results achieved in terms of hearing in 36 patients who had each undergone resection of a cholesteatoma and closure of a labyrinthine fistula.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: These patients included 28 who had a fistula of the semicircular canal, in 7 of them with an opened perilymphatic space. In 8 cases we found a fistula of the cochlea, with with a perilymphatic leak 7 in of them. We compared the sensorineural threshold before and after surgery and also the results in the two groups. Patients who were deaf preoperatively were excluded from further analysis.
RESULTS:

The authors presented management rules and the results of surgical treatment in perilymphatic fistulas. Materials comprise 7 cases of cholesteatoma and 6 cases after previously performed so called conservative modified operation of the ear. In 3 cases cholesteatomas were destroying the membranous structures or were being adherent to them. In these cases labyrinthectomy was performed with partial conservation of hearing in one patient. In the remained 10 cases the fistulas were cleaned and sealed with 3 layers of tissues--fascia, cartilage and fascia. After the ossicular chain was reconstructed

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This article is a retrospective review of 5 cases of delayed labyrinthine fistula in patients with a longstanding canal wall down mastoidectomy.
MATERIAL: All patients had a long-term postoperative follow up with no evidence of complications till they suddenly started to have vertigo. The symptoms were caused by a bony erosion of the lateral semicircular canal detected on physical examination or by a CT-scan. There was no evidence of a recurrent cholesteatoma.
RESULTS: The patients underwent surgery in order to close the fistula, with a good result. In all cases, a fact

Brachiosauridae is a clade of titanosauriform sauropod dinosaurs that includes the well-known Late Jurassic taxa Brachiosaurus and Giraffatitan. However, there is disagreement over the brachiosaurid affinities of most other taxa, and little consensus regarding the clade's composition or inter-relationships. An unnamed partial sauropod skeleton was collected from middle-late Oxfordian (early Late Jurassic) deposits in Damparis, in the Jura department of eastern France, in 1934. Since its brief description in 1943, this specimen has been informally known in the literature as the 'Damparis saurop

BACKGROUND: The skin lesions found in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) are characterized by the presence of neutrophils at the dermal papillary tips in areas where the diagnostic cutaneous IgA deposits are found. Although the presence of the skin lesions of DH is known to be associated with gluten-sensitive enteropathy, the mechanisms that control the development of skin lesions are not known.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if circulating neutrophils from patients with DH have evidence of priming as shown by increased expression of CD11b, decreased expression of L-selectin and increased

A retrospective review of 110 consecutive cases of chronic otitis media surgery was carried out in a large metropolitan public teaching hospital in the United States that serves the inner-city population. The purpose was to identify dural herniations and encephaloceles (DHE) as well as complications associated with these entities. Twenty-nine such patients (26.4%) were identified, 7 of which (6.4%) were encephaloceles. In patients with DHE, cholesteatoma was found in 83%, a labyrinthine fistula in 48%, preoperative facial paralysis in 14% (4 patients), facial nerve involvement by cholesteatoma

Labyrinthitis is the most frequent complication of chronic otitis media (COM). Retrospective analysis of 1,210 patients operated due to COM was carried out. Circumscribed labyrinthitis was found in 17.2% and deafness in 1.2% of patients. To evaluate the effect of labyrinthitis on bone conduction (BC) we measured BC threshold in a group of 140 patients with unilateral COM without labyrinthitis and in a group of 42 patients with unilateral COM with labyrinthitis. BC threshold of the healthy ear was subtracted from the BC threshold of the affected ear in the same patient to eliminate presbyacusis

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors and clinical features of anacusis or severe deafness associated with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM ).
METHOD: A retrospective review of 62 ears consecutive cases of severe deafness (15 ears) and anacusis (47 ears) associated with CSOM were investigated . There were 5 ears severe deafness deteriorated to anacusis after procedures. This represented 6.42% of our total series of CSOM with or without cholesteatoma in adults and children (965 ears) in 1993-2000. The series with cholesteatoma or granuloma or tympanosclerosis were 46 (74.19%) ears 1

OBJECTIVE: To report the experience of surgical treatment of inflammatory labyrinthine fistula (LF).
METHOD: Twenty-three patients with cholesteatomatous otitis media complicated with LF underwent mastoidectomy, surgical repair and obliteration of LF. After removal of cholesteatoma matrix and inflammatory lesion around fistula, the fistulae were treated as following procedures: fistulae less than 2 mm in diameter were overlaid with fascia (7 cases), those 2 to 3 mm were obliterated with bone chips and fascia (13 cases), and for those more than 3 mm, the bony semicircular canal lumen were pack

Understanding the relationship between the anatomy of the fallopian canal and a variety of ear diseases is necessary. In this study, our purpose was to identify the incidence of facial nerve dehiscence in patients undergoing surgery for a variety of chronic ear diseases. The operative records of 219 patients were reviewed retrospectively for dehiscence of the facial canal. The diagnoses were cholesteatoma (n = 49), tympanosclerosis (n = 51), adhesive otitis media (n = 38), and chronic otitis media (n = 81). Only 17 of 219 who underwent tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy were excluded from the

Labyrinthine fistula is a potentially serious complication of cholesteatoma. During or after surgery, cholesteatoma can induce partial or total destruction of cochleovestibular functions. We operated 38 patients from 1983 to 1996. The site of the fistula was the external semi-circular canal in 90% of the cases. The facial nerve canal was eroded in 66% of the cases. We performed 11 CT scans; only 7 evidenced the fistula. We removed the matrix of the cholesteatoma during the initial surgery in 35 cases and in 3 left the fistula in situ for subsequent excision at a second operation. Postoperative

A retrospective case record study of 20 patients in Oslo operated on for chronic otitis media with labyrinthine fistula between 1986 and 1999 was performed in order to estimate the incidence of, and identify predictors for, labyrinthine fistulas. The incidence of fistula was 0.3 per 100 000, with a median age at diagnosis of 37 years. The median duration of chronic otitis media prior to labyrinthine fistula detection was significantly correlated with age at surgery. Subjective hearing loss (90%), otorrhoea (65%) and dizziness (50%) were presenting symptoms. Modified canal-wall-down mastoidecto
