The Risk of Becoming a Cochlear Implant Non-user or Minimal-user in a Patient Cohort From Denmark 2010-2022.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implant (CI) non-use and minimal-use are important, but sparsely investigated parameters. This study investigates the risk of becoming a CI non-user or a minimal-user in a post-lingual deafness adult population. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary medical institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All adult patients (18 years or above) who received CI surgery at a single center from 2010 to 2022 (n=599) were invited to participate in a questionnaire study concerning the CI usage after surgery. The questionnaire information was combined with data from med

Individuals with congenital amusia show degraded performance in a nonword repetition task with lexical tones.

Congenital amusia is a disorder characterized by abnormal pitch processing, including pitch encoding and pitch memory. Individuals with amusia were impaired in speech perception, but they showed comparable speech production as those without (mainly investigated in tonal languages). Nonetheless, most previous studies collected amusics' recordings based on real words, and little is known about how amusics produce nonwords that incorporate phonological components of syllables and lexical tones. In this study, two participant groups of amusics and typical, musically intact controls (18 participant

A porcine congenital deafness model with unconditional knockout of GJB2 generated by CRISPR/Cas9 genomic editing.

GJB2, the primary gene responsible for DFNB1, the most prevalent non-syndromic hearing loss (NSHL), has variants that account for over 50% of all prelingual hearing loss (HL). Mice are the main model for congenital hearing loss (CHL) research, but they have delayed auditory maturation postnatally, and unconditional Gjb2 knockout in mice causes embryonic lethality. Pigs have similar inner-ear anatomy to humans and, like humans, have matured auditory function and fully differentiated cochlea at birth. Currently, there is no GJB2 unconditional knockout animal model for GJB2-related CHLs research,

Two-step voltage-sensor activation of the human KV7.4 channel and effect of a deafness-associated mutation.

KCNQ4-encoded KV7.4 voltage-gated potassium channels are expressed in hair-cells of the inner ear. Loss-of-function variants in KCNQ4 cause non-syndromic progressive hearing loss (DFNA2). KV7.4 pore opening requires voltage-dependent conformational changes (activation) of the voltage-sensor domains (VSDs); however, how fast charge displacement during VSD activation is coupled to slow channel opening is currently unclear. Here, we optically tracked KV7.4 VSD activation with voltage-clamp fluorometry, leveraging two fluorophores and pulsed excitation, and found that VSD activation comprises seve

Healthcare access barriers among deaf adolescents in nepal: a cross-sectional study to inform provider awareness.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on healthcare access barriers among people with hearing loss in Nepal is limited, and research focusing specifically on Deaf adolescents is particularly scarce in low- and lower-middle-income countries. This study explored healthcare access barriers among Deaf adolescents whose primary mode of communication is sign language. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional convergent mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently at Dhaulagiri Deaf Residential Secondary School in Baglung, the only secondary-level institution in Nepal enr

Establishing normative data for five new temporal auditory processing tests in primary-school aged children.

OBJECTIVES: To establish normative data and investigate the impact of age and sex in children for five new tests of auditory processing that do not involve speech, but which include stimuli as acoustically complex as speech. The tests are: Adaptive within-channel gap detection (WCGD), Adaptive between-channel gap detection (BCGD), Spectro-temporal resolution - Sweep (STR-S), Spectro-temporal resolution - Duration (STR-D), and Adaptive Temporal Fine Structure (TFS) tests. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. STUDY SAMPLE: 194 normally-hearing 6-to-11-year-old children, who spoke English either na

Remote versus in-clinic cochlear implant programming during rehabilitation: clinical outcomes and patient perspectives.

PURPOSE: Increasing cochlear implant (CI) demand due to broader candidacy and an ageing population challenges in-clinic rehabilitation. Remote programming offers a promising alternative to improve accessibility. This study evaluates its non-inferiority and optimal timing during rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three postlingually deafened adults were divided into three groups: standard in-clinic fitting (n = 21), remote fitting during the second session (n = 12), and remote fitting during the third session (n = 10). Auditory outcomes at the fourth session were assessed using speec

Using vocoders to the implanted ear to investigate the binaural benefit for music sound quality in single-sided deaf cochlear implant users.

Despite the poor sound quality provided by cochlear implants (CIs), single-sided deaf (SSD) CI users prefer to listen to music with the acoustic hearing (AH) and CI ears together rather than with the AH ear alone. The source of this binaural benefit remains unclear. In the present study, sound quality ratings were collected in SSD CI users for music excerpts from different genres (pop, rock, and classical). A novel vocoder-to-the-CI (VCI) approach was used to control the spectral and temporal information delivered to the CI ear. Custom sine-wave vocoders were designed for each participant acco

Implantation of a transcutaneous, bone-anchored, piezoelectric bone conduction hearing aid on the squama temporalis.

Bone-anchored hearing implants, such as the Osia® system (Cochlear Deutschland GmbH, Hanover, Germany), are used to rehabilitate conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, and single-sided deafness. The surgical technique presented anchors the OSI300 supraauricularly and subperiosteally over the squama temporalis, thereby avoiding the creation of an implant bed in the mastoid and reducing cosmetic contour deformity. Cranial-parietotemporal placement allows bypassing absent or previously operated bone mastoid structures. Postoperatively, the implant was proved to be stable and inconspicuous,

Case Report: Intracranial hypertension occurring in association with subacute thyroiditis.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limited inflammatory thyroid disorder that typically produces a transient thyrotoxic phase. Intracranial hypertension (IH) is a rare but potentially sight-threatening complication of thyrotoxicosis, reported almost exclusively in hyperthyroidism, with only a single previous report linking it to SAT. We report the case of a 29-year-old woman who developed IH during the thyrotoxic phase of subacute thyroiditis, temporally related to dental manipulation. She presented with headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever, followed by a syncopal episode; clinical, laborat
