REM Sleep Impairment May Underlie Sleep-Driven Modulations of Tinnitus in Sleep Intermittent Tinnitus Subjects: A Controlled Study.

(1) Background: Poor sleep and fragmented sleep are associated with several chronic conditions. Tinnitus is an auditory symptom that often negatively combines with poor sleep and has been associated with sleep impairment and sleep apnea. The relationship between tinnitus psychoacoustic characteristics and sleep is still poorly explored, notably for a particular subgroup of patients, for whom the perceived loudness of their tinnitus is highly modulated by sleep. (2) Methods: For this observational prospective study, 30 subjects with tinnitus were recruited, including 15 "sleep intermittent tinn

Effects of Red and Infrared Laser Therapy in Patients with Tinnitus: A Double-Blind, Clinical, Randomized Controlled Study Combining Light with Ultrasound, Drugs and Vacuum Therapy.

BACKGROUND: tinnitus is a symptom with no specific cause known to date, and there are no associated pharmacogenomics of hearing disorders and no FDA-approved drugs for tinnitus treatment. The effectiveness of drug treatments is not reproducible on idiopathic patients and inexistent in refractory patients. Personalized treatments for these patients are a great clinical need. Our study investigated the outcome of potential alternative and complementary treatment modalities for idiopathic and refractory tinnitus patients. METHODS: we were the first to evaluate the tinnitus handicap inventory (TH

Do you Hear what I Hear? A Qualitative Study Examining Psychological Associations Underlying Evaluations of Everyday Sounds in Patients with Chronic Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a multifactorial phenomenon and psychological, audiological, or medical factors can facilitate its onset or maintenance. A growing body of research investigates individuals' perceptions, associations, and experiences of living with tinnitus. This body of research examines tinnitus as a condition rather than a symptom. We examine a sample of chronic tinnitus patients in terms of associations that are induced by neutral sounds. In particular, we investigate how patients with chronic tinnitus ascribe meaning to those neutral sounds. The present study uses Mayring's content analysis to

Increased pyramidal and VIP neuronal excitability in rat primary auditory cortex directly correlates with tinnitus behaviour.

Tinnitus affects roughly 15%-20% of the population while severely impacting 10% of those afflicted. Tinnitus pathology is multifactorial, generally initiated by damage to the auditory periphery, resulting in a cascade of maladaptive plastic changes at multiple levels of the central auditory neuraxis as well as limbic and non-auditory cortical centres. Using a well-established condition-suppression model of tinnitus, we measured tinnitus-related changes in the microcircuits of excitatory/inhibitory neurons onto layer 5 pyramidal neurons (PNs), as well as changes in the excitability of vasoactiv

Monogenic Causes of Low-Frequency Non-Syndromic Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Low-frequency non-syndromic hearing loss (LFNSHL) is a rare form of hearing loss (HL). It is defined as HL at low frequencies (≤2,000 Hz) resulting in a characteristic ascending audiogram. LFNSHL is usually diagnosed postlingually and is progressive, leading to HL affecting other frequencies as well. Sometimes it occurs with tinnitus. Around half of the diagnosed prelingual HL cases have a genetic cause and it is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive mode. Postlingual HL caused by genetic changes generally has an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and its incidence rem

The Effect of Tinnitus and Related Characteristics on Subcortical Auditory Processing.

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate whether individuals with tinnitus exhibited evidence of reduced inhibition and increased excitation at the subcortical auditory processing level. Based on the proposed mechanism of tinnitus generation, including peripheral auditory insult that triggers reduced inhibition and subcortical hyperactivity, it was hypothesized that a tinnitus group would yield reduced amplitudes for the most peripheral auditory brainstem response (ABR) component (wave I) and larger amplitudes for the most central ABR component (wave V) relative to controls ma

Tinnitus and Influencing Comorbidities.

Numerous studies show that impairments in chronic tinnitus are closely connected with psychosomatic and other concomitant symptoms. This overview summarizes some of these studies. Beyond hearing loss, individual interactions of medical and psychosocial stress factors as well as resources are of central importance. Tinnitus related distress reflects a large number of intercorrelated, psychosomatic influences - such as personality traits, stress reactivity and depression or anxiety - which can be accompanied by cognitive difficulties and should be conceptualized and assessed within a vulnerabili

Tinnitus and Multimodal Cortical Interaction.

The term of subjective tinnitus is used to describe a perceived noise without an external sound source. Therefore, it seems to be obvious that tinnitus can be understood as purely auditory, sensory problem. From a clinical point of view, however, this is a very inadequate description, as there are significant comorbidities associated with chronic tinnitus. Neurophysiological investigations with different imaging techniques give a very similar picture, because not only the auditory system is affected in chronic tinnitus patients, but also a widely ramified subcortical and cortical network. In a

Exploding Head Syndrome among Patients Seeking Help for Tinnitus and/or Hyperacusis at an Audiology Department in the UK: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Exploding head syndrome (EHS) is characterized by hearing a sudden loud noise or experiencing a sense of explosion in head during the transition of sleep-wake or wake-sleep. The experience of EHS shares similarities with tinnitus, where an individual perceives a sound without any external sound source. To the authors' knowledge, the possible relationship between EHS and tinnitus has not been explored. PURPOSE: Preliminary assessment of prevalence of EHS and its related factors among patients seeking help for tinnitus and/or hyperacusis. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectio

Prevalence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in 9-12-year-old children.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in children aged 9-12 years in Flanders, as well as to explore the associations with hearing abilities and listening behaviours. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in four different Flemish schools. The questionnaire was distributed among 415 children, with a response rate of 97.3%. RESULTS: The prevalence of permanent tinnitus was 10.5% and of hyperacusis was 3.3%. The hyperacusis prevalence was higher in girls (p < .05). Some children reported effects of tinnitus in terms of anxiety (20.1%), sleep (36.5%), and

Hyperacusis is associated with smaller gray matter volumes in the supplementary motor area.

Hyperacusis is a disorder in loudness perception characterized by increased sensitivity to ordinary environmental sounds and associated with otologic conditions, including hearing loss and tinnitus (the phantom perception of sound) as well as neurologic and neuropsychiatric conditions. Hyperacusis is believed to arise centrally in the brain; however, the underlying causes are unknown. To gain insight into differences in brain morphology associated with hyperacusis, we undertook a retrospective case-control study comparing whole-brain gray matter morphology in participants with sensorineural he

[Endolymphatic sac tumor with intralabyrinthine hemorrhage: a case report].

A 27-year-old female patient suffering endolymphatic sac tumor with intralabyrinthine hemorrhage was reported. The patient had hearing loss in the left ear with continuous tinnitus, and MRI showed the soft tissue shadow of endolymphatic sac. Considering that the tumor involved semicircular canal and vestibule, endolymphatic cyst tumor resection was performed by labyrinth route. After surgery, there was no cerebrospinal fluid leakage and facial nerve function was normal. More importantly, enhanced MRI of temporal bone showed no tumor recurrence 1 year after surgery.

Towards a psychological framework on time perception in patients with chronic tinnitus.

Although disabling tinnitus is a chronic auditory phantom sensation, current knowledge on time perception (i.e., subjective time) in sufferers is limited and unsystematic. This theoretical analysis provides a first approach to this topic, highlighting the heterogeneity of time perception in humans as shown in various research areas. This heterogeneity is inherently related to goal attainment. Our immediate perception of time is restricted to present moment and recent past, whereas our sense of time is mostly future-oriented and represented as our past in a mental time line. The heterogeneity o

The Effectiveness of Unguided Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus for Patients with Tinnitus Alone or Combined with Hyperacusis and/or Misophonia: A Preliminary Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom, audiologist-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a key intervention to alleviate the distress caused by tinnitus and its comorbid hyperacusis. However, the availability of face-to-face CBT is limited, and such therapy involves significant costs. CBT provided via the internet provides a potential solution to improve access to CBT for tinnitus. PURPOSE: The aim was to perform a preliminary assessment of the effect of a specific program of nonguided internet-based CBT for tinnitus, denoted iCBT(T), in alleviating the problems caused by tinnitus alone
