Unusual complications of temporal bone fractures.

Eighty-two temporal bone fractures were diagnosed in 75 patients with high-resolution computed tomographic scanning. Excluding six gunshot injuries, 55 (72%) of the fractures were oblique, 11 (15%) were longitudinal, and ten (13%) were transverse. Facial paresis or paralysis occurred in 45 patients (60%), hemotympanum occurred in 67 (89%), and cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea occurred in 19 (25%). Among 66 patients in whom audiometry was performed, 20 (30%) had conductive hearing loss, nine (14%) had sensorineural loss, and 36 (55%) had mixed hearing loss. Vestibular symptoms were present in 23 pa

Inherited low-frequency hearing loss. A new mixed conductive/sensorineural entity?

Eighteen patients with low-frequency hearing loss ( LFHL ), 10 males and 8 females with an average age of 27 years, were examined in order to classify their hearing loss, i.e. to find the topical site of the hearing lesion and to evaluate the aetiology of the hearing disorder. Based on extensive audiological test procedures, the patients could be subdivided into two groups: Group A comprising 11 patients with true sensorineural hearing impairment caused by various well-known aetiologies, and group B comprising 7 patients in whom no classification of the LFHL could be made because of conflictin

Fluctuating hearing loss and recurrent vertigo in otosclerosis. An audiologic and temporal bone study.

This report summarizes audiologic and temporal bone findings in a 47-year-old white female with recurrent attacks of vertigo, tinnitus, and bilateral hearing loss. A series of audiograms, obtained over a 15-year period, showed a fluctuating mixed (sensorineural and conductive) hearing loss with a relatively flat configuration in the left ear and a relatively stable, mild sensorineural loss with a sloping contour in the right ear. Temporal bone studies revealed the existence of otosclerotic foci bilaterally. In the left ear, the otosclerotic focus has grown close to the utricular and lateral am

Hearing and para-airport children.

Audiometric screening was carried out on 3,322 elementary and high school students living in the vicinity of Logan International Airport, Boston, in an effort to determine whether noise from aircraft had any measurable effect on their hearing. Followup examinations and additional data on children failing the screening examination made it possible to classify the hearing losses as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. The incidence of bilateral sensorineural or mixed hearing loss in the group living directly under flight paths or immediately adjacent to runways was not significantly different fr

The meaning of modern audiological tests in relation to noise-induced deafness: a review.

Wilmot, T. J. (1972).Brit. J. industr. Med.,29, 125-133. The meaning of modern audiological tests in relation to noise-induced deafness: a review. If noise-induced deafness becomes a prescribed disease, it is inevitable that a very large number of workers with hearing difficulties will be discovered and will pose serious problems for both industrial medical officers and otologists working in the National Health Service. The two main problems are detection of deafness and a decision whether the hearing loss is attributable to noise damage. This paper is concerned largely with the second problem
