Branchiootic syndrome (BOS) is a rare, autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by malformations of the ear associated with hearing loss, second branchial arch anomalies, and the absence of renal anomalies. Herein, we report the case of an 8-year-old male patient with BOS. The proband also experiences mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear, and severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear. Preauricular pits, branchial fistulae, and cochlear hypoplasia were present bilaterally. Type III cup-shaped ear, and external auditory canal stenosis were detecte

PURPOSE: The indications of Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) have been expanded to include patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss due to congenital aural atresia (CAA). However, the current evidence supporting the auditory outcomes of VSB is based mainly on case reports and retrospective chart reviews. Therefore, the present systematic review aims to summarize and critically appraise the current evidence regarding the safety and effectiveness of VSB in children and adult patients with CAA.
METHODS: A systematic literature search retrieved studies that evaluated the outcomes of unilateral or

This study investigated sound localization abilities in patients with bilateral conductive and/or mixed hearing loss (BCHL) when listening with either one or two middle ear implants (MEIs). Sound localization was measured by asking patients to point as quickly and accurately as possible with a head-mounted LED in the perceived sound direction. Loudspeakers, positioned around the listener within a range of +73°/-73° in the horizontal plane, were not visible to the patients. Broadband (500 Hz-20 kHz) noise bursts (150 ms), roved over a 20-dB range in 10 dB steps was presented. MEIs stimulate the

IMPORTANCE: Monogenic causes of childhood hearing loss are well established, as are polygenic risk contributions to age-related hearing loss. However, an untested possibility is that polygenic risk scores (PRS) also contribute to childhood hearing loss of all severities, alongside environmental and/or monogenic causes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between a PRS for adult hearing loss and childhood hearing loss phenotypes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used a unique population-based dataset spanning normal hearing to profound loss, combining 2 contempo

Background/Objectives: Hearing loss in childhood is associated with significant challenges in linguistic and cognitive development, particularly affecting language skills such as syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, which are essential for effective communication and social integration. This study aimed to analyze how different types and degrees of hearing loss impact linguistic development in children, and to identify clinical factors-such as age at diagnosis and years of language intervention-that may predict language performance. Methods: This study included a sample of 140 children aged 6 to

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect the auditory system either as a direct complication of the disease course or secondary to medication adverse effects. Rheumatoid arthritis-induced autoimmune inner ear disease can present as tinnitus, conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), or mixed. According to previously published articles, SNHL is the most common hearing loss in RA. Age, smoking, noise exposure, and alcohol may affect the disease progression. Here, we present a case of a 79-year-old female who presented to the rheumatology clinic with complaints of abrupt onset bilat

Otosclerosis is a bone condition affecting the stapes bone within the otic capsule, and its exact cause is still unknown. It is characterized by a lack of proper remodeling of newly formed vascular and woven bone, leading to the development of abnormal osteons and the formation of sclerotic bone. Bilateral otosclerosis is seen in 80% of patients and 60% of otosclerosis patients have a family history of the condition. The etiology of this disease is still unknown, there are lots of theories to explain it. The histopathological (HP) studies of otosclerosis showed that osteoblasts, osteoclasts, v

BACKGROUND: Children with permanent unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are an understudied population, with limited data to inform the guidelines on clinical management. There is a funding gap in healthcare provision for the children with UHL in the United Kingdom, where genetic screening, support services, and devices are not consistently provided or fully funded in all areas. They are a disparate population with regard to aetiology and their degree of hearing loss, and hence their device choice and use. Despite having one "good ear", some children with UHL can have similar outcomes, socially, beh

Vancomycin, a potent glycopeptide antibiotic renowned for its efficacy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also harbors the potential for adverse reactions. While its use is often associated with infusion-related events and nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity has emerged as a noteworthy but rare concern. This adverse effect, characterized by a spectrum of transient to permanent hearing loss or damage, typically surfaces in patients receiving excessive doses, those undergoing concomitant therapy with other ototoxic agents such as aminoglycosides, or individuals with baseline hearing im

OBJECTIVES: We aim to describe types of hearing loss associated with Fanconi anemia patients who underwent a bone marrow transplant (BMT) to identify possible etiologies of hearing loss. Additionally, we hope to investigate hearing loss early in life as a potential predictor of needing a BMT surgery. Fanconi anemia is a rare autosomal recessive disease that is the most common inherited bone marrow failure syndrome, characterized by bone marrow failure and multiple congenital anomalies, including hearing loss. This is the largest study to date reviewing types of hearing loss in patients with Fa
